On DVD: 9 Movie Spies MacGruber Should Have Studied

MacGruber , out this week on DVD, yawned in theaters, and I think I know why: satires of spy/secret agent/man-of-action genre stuff are already thick on the ground, and have been since the ’60s. There must be something inherently funny about the Cold War if it gave birth to a “spy” like James Bond, who didn’t even do much spying. (Aren’t spies supposed to be, you know, covert? Did Sean Connery ever do anything but announce his presence everywhere he went?) And now that we know the whole Cold War was a sham anyway, we can’t shake the silliness. Maybe it was all one big, extremely preposterous movie, like these 9 spy comedies:

SHOCKER: Will Forte Has No Plans For MacGruber 2

You can finally wipe the sweat from your brow because Will Forte has confirmed that he is not exiting Saturday Night Live to shoot a sequel to his box-office flop MacGruber . Instead, the actor will spend his retirement “playing volleyball and drinking beer.” In an interview published yesterday, Forte revealed that he decided to leave after seven seasons because he “turned 40 and started getting very… introspective.” That being said, Forte is totally open to returning to Studio 8H to reprise the crafty character for a few minutes. “If they ever wanted me to come back and do a ‘MacGruber” for one episode,’ Forte offered, “I would.” [ JoBlo ]

Friday Box Office: Unhappily Ever After

What a difference three years — and one really bad sequel — makes. When Shrek the Third opened over this weekend in 2007, it grossed $38 million on Friday; Shrek Forever After , however, could only score $20 million yesterday, this despite the added benefit of higher ticket prices and 3D. Yikes. No reason to start a collection for Dreamworks Animation, but Shrek Forever After will likely wind up around $50 million short of its predecesor come Sunday. Elsewhere, weep for Will Forte. MacGruber grossed an embarrassing $1.5 million on Friday and will be lucky to close out the weekend with more than $5 million. Insert bomb related pun here. The top-five after the jump.

REVIEW: Kitsch Overload, Sparse Laughs Weigh Down MacGruber

Every era has its excesses, its mullets, its chunky removable car cassette players, its Quarterflash. But MacGruber, the feature-length comedy adapted from the strange, slender recurring Saturday Night Live skit, relies too heavily on the idea that the past — corny, irrelevant, suffering from chronic bad taste — is funny by itself. The drag is that when you’ve seen one Blaupunkt, you’ve seen them all.
