Elton John, Cameron Crowe Premiere Get Tribeca 2011 Off to Rocking Start

The Tribeca Film Festival has always been an adventuresome place to visit on opening night. Few major festivals outside Cannes can claim to have hosted such a broad range of popcorn prospects ( Speed Racer , Shrek Forever After ), midsize local darlings ( Whatever Works ) and variety show curios (buy me a beer and I’ll tell you about that year Jon Bon Jovi slow-jammed “Living on a Prayer”). But Wednesday, just in time to commence their 10th annual event, Team Tribeca nailed it.

Toy Story 3 Bombs in Russia

It’s not just domestic spies who reflect the increasingly fraught relations between the U.S. and Russia. The Kremlin (or somebody) appears to have put a hit out on Toy Story 3 , which has grossed a disastrous $4.8 million among Russian moviegoers in its first 10 days of release. By comparison, Shrek Forever After grossed $37.7 million over the same period. Of course this can mean only one thing: Armond White is huge in Russia . [ LAT ]

‘Shrek Forever After’ Tops Box Office For Third Straight Weekend

Second-place finisher ‘Get Him to the Greek’ was best of the new releases. By Josh Wigler “Shrek Forever After” Photo: Marco Garcia/ Getty Images The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Shrek Forever After” ($25.3 million) #2 “Get Him to the Greek” ($17.4 million) #3 “Killers” ($16.1 million) #4 “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” ($13.9 million) #5 “Sex and the City 2” ($12.7 million) Even with four major new releases hitting theaters this weekend, box-office supremacy remained in the clutches of the mean green ogre known as Shrek. “Shrek Forever After,” the franchise’s fourth installment, topped the charts with a $25.3 million haul from Friday through Sunday, marking the film’s third consecutive weekend victory. Of the weekend’s new releases, “Get Him to the Greek” performed the best. The raunchy comedy stars Jonah Hill as a young talent agent and Russell Brand as Aldous Snow, the troubled rock star first introduced in 2008’s “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” “Greek” managed a respectable $17.4 million haul, nearly halving its reported $40 million production budget. Although “Greek” wasn’t able to best “Shrek,” it did manage to defeat “Killers,” the spy-themed romantic comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl as a married couple drawn into the deadly world of espionage. The film earned a third-place finish worth $16.1 million. The weekend’s other major new releases, “Marmaduke” and “Splice,” stayed out of the top five altogether with sixth- and eighth-place finishes, respectively. It’s a particularly disappointing finish for the Owen Wilson-starring “Marmaduke,” as the family film was the widest new release of the weekend by a significant margin of over 300 theaters. Rounding out fourth and fifth place were last weekend’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and “Sex and the City 2.” Upcoming Releases Action is the name of the game next weekend as the Bradley Cooper-starring “The A-Team” and the remake of “The Karate Kid” enter the box-office arena. McDonald’s Forced to Recall 12 Million Shrek Drinking Glasses

No wonder Shrek is green. McDonald’s is being forced to recall 12 million Shrek Forever After -themed drinking glasses because the painted design — which the AP story hilariously calls “cheap” — contains the toxic metal cadmium. And — wouldn’t you know it — cadmium is a known carcinogen that can cause bone softening and severe kidney problems. Good job, everyone! Do you want fries with that? [ MSNBC ]

Friday Box Office: Sex Sells

If Sex and the Ctiy 2 is like the Star Wars prequels for women, does that make Sarah Jessica Parker Jar Jar Binks? The much derided sequel — and apparent terrorist training video — followed up its $14.2 million Thursday opening with $13.5 million on Friday, meaning it will easily top the box office over Memorial Day weekend. Cosmos for all! Except Jake Gyllenhaal and Jerry Bruckheimer: Prince of Persia grossed just $9.5 million on Friday, which would be good if this were Date Night . Overall, Friday ticket sales were down 20 percent from Memorial Day last year, proving once again that if the movies suck, no one will actually want to see them. Unless they’re called Sex and the City 2 . Or Shrek Forever After . The top-five after the jump.

Shrek Forever After Tops US Box Office

The fourth installment in the Shrek Franchise was the top movie at the North American box office over the weekend. It took about $71.3million on its first three days on release. However, Shrek Forever After did not perform as well as its two previous films, Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third. Both of which had made more than $100million in their debut weekends. The spokesman for DreamWorks Animation admitted that the fourth movie’s takings were a little lower to what they have anticipated. Its chart-topping debut put an end to Iron Man 2’s two-week reign as box office champion in the US and Canada. The film Shrek Forever After is the first in the series to be shown in 3D featuring the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz. Top 5 US box office films: 1. ‘Shrek Forever After’ Dominates Weekend Box Office

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Shrek Forever After easily claimed the top spot at the weekend box office with a $71.3 million debut, according to initial estimates released Sunday. The opening victory, however, was the weakest debut of all Shrek sequels as the fourth installment of the DreamWorks Animation franchise fell short of 2004’s Shrek 2 ($108 million) and 2007’s Shrek the Third ($121.6 million). read more

Weekend Receipts: Shrek Hits the Fan

When is an animated movie that opens with $71 million — thus making it one of the four best animated openings in history — considered a humongous disappointment? When it’s Shrek Forever After . The supposed final chapter in the Dreamworks Animation smash series easily topped the box office over the weekend, but wound up opening to $50 million less than Shrek The Third did just three years ago. Guess people really didn’t like that one, huh? Dig up your most dated cultural reference and get ready for some weekend receipts.

Friday Box Office: Unhappily Ever After

What a difference three years — and one really bad sequel — makes. When Shrek the Third opened over this weekend in 2007, it grossed $38 million on Friday; Shrek Forever After , however, could only score $20 million yesterday, this despite the added benefit of higher ticket prices and 3D. Yikes. No reason to start a collection for Dreamworks Animation, but Shrek Forever After will likely wind up around $50 million short of its predecesor come Sunday. Elsewhere, weep for Will Forte. MacGruber grossed an embarrassing $1.5 million on Friday and will be lucky to close out the weekend with more than $5 million. Insert bomb related pun here. The top-five after the jump.
