Tilikum, the famous, beloved and controversial whale who lived most of his life at SeaWorld in San Diego, died on Friday after a year-long battle with a bacterial infection. He was presumed to be 36 years old. The infection affected the animal’s lungs and had been around since last spring, during which time SeaWorld veterinarian sadly announced that the illness was “chronic and progressive.” Tilikum was born in Iceland and captured in 1983. He was held in a concrete tank for a year, prior to being sent to British Columbia, Canada, to perform at Sealand of the Pacific. Over the years, Tilikum became a source of scandal; both due to animal rights organizations taking issue with how animals are held in captivity in this kind of manner… … and also because he was actually linked to three separate deaths. In 1991, 20-year-old Keltie Byrne slipped into a tank at an amusement park called Sealand, got thrashed around by whales (including Tilikum) and drowned. In 1999, 27-year-old Daniel Dukes snuck into SearWorld (after Tilikum was transferred there) and was found drowned and draped across Tilikum’s back. In 2010, trainer Dawn Brancheau leaned over Tilikum’s tank, was grabbed in his jaws by her hair and drowned as a result of the subsequent thrashing. Nevertheless, following a year hiatus, Tilikum’s shows continued. Fans kept showing up to see him perform. In 2013, the documentary “Blackfish” centered significantly around Tilikum and the deaths that surrounded his existence in captivity. The film portrayed the whale as a victim; one researcher said his circumstance turned him “psychotic.” In 2014, SeaWorld announced that it would the stop the practice of captive whale breeding, announcing that Tilikum’s “will be the last generation of orcas at SeaWorld. He is believed to have sired 21 children. Despite these controversies, those at SeaWorld held Tilikum in high esteem. Tilikum’s veterinarians and caretakers delivered various treatment regimens over the course of this illness, which consisted of, among other things, combinations of anti-inflammatories, anti-bacterials, anti-nausea medications, hydration therapy and aerosolized antimicrobial therapy. While today is a difficult day for the SeaWorld family, it’s important to remember that Tilikum lived a long and enriching life while at SeaWorld and inspired millions of people to care about this amazing species. And now, it seems the cult leader and mass murderer is in his final days, as sources indicate that the 82-year-old inmate remains hospitalized for intestinal bleeding, and has been deemed too weak for life-saving surgery. Manson was removed from California’s Corcoran State Prison earlier this week in order to receive treatment at an emergency room in nearby Bakersfield. He was expected to return to the hospital within 48 hours, but doctors quickly determined that his condition was worse than previously expected. According to TMZ, medical staff wanted to perform surgery shortly after Manson arrived at the hospital, but he refused to give his consent. On Thursday, Manson reportedly had a change of heart and agreed to undergo the procedure, but a pre-surgical examination revealed that he was too ill to operate, and attempt to do so would be life-threatening. At this time, doctors are said to be uncertain of their next move, and those most familiar with the situation say that it’s unlikely Manson will ever return to his cell. Manson is currently serving nine life sentences for his role in the two-day killing spree that claimed the lives of actress Sharon Tate and six other individuals. Though he never picked up a weapon himself, the murderers were acting on commands from Manson, and are believed to have been psychologically manipulated by the charismatic lifelong criminal. Astonishingly, Manson has managed to make headlines several times in the decades since the Tate and LaBianca family murders, despite having been incarcerated in various maximum security facilities nearly 50 years. In 2015, the media took an interest in Manson’s engagement to Afton Elaine Burton , a young admirer who claimed to be in love with the infamous murderer. Manson called off the wedding just days before it was scheduled to take place, reportedly because he believed Burton planned to profit from displaying his corpse. In the days since his hospitalization, reports from current and former prison officials have emerged, depicting Manson as a violent and troublesome inmate. “He has had over 100 violations since he was incarcerated, which has been a very long time,” says a spokesperson for the California penal system. Charles Manson, arguably the most famous mass murder currently serving time behind bars, has found a woman who wants to be his lawfully wedded wife. The serial killer, who is serving a life sentence for slaughtering Sharon Tate and six other victims, was granted a marriage license today, according to The Associated Press. The 80-year old is set to marry Afton Elaine Burton, a 26-year old who runs a Charles Manson fansite. Burton left her Midwestern home nine years ago to move to Corcoran, California, the site of the prison in which Manson is incarcerated. She has dedicated her life to proclaiming his innocence. “I love him,” Burton told The AP. “I’m with him. There’s all kinds of things.” Burton says the ceremony will take place next month behind prison walls. The can invite up to 10 free people, but are not permitted to have any conjugal visits. The marriage license does not indicate a wedding date, but says the pair has 90 days to get married or they will have to reapply. Manson became notorious in 1969 as the leader of a roving “family” of young murderers. An shooting in a parking structure outside a Las Vegas Strip movie theater left two people critically wounded and another with a minor injury last night. Police don’t believe the shooting just after midnight was a random act, and Officer Laura Meltzer said the shooter or shooters hadn’t been identified. Las Vegas Strip Shooting She adds that earlier reports of the shooting taking place in the theater are false, and that it was more likely an ongoing conflict between two groups. “The theater had nothing to do with it,” Meltzer told The Associated Press. “They were not coming from a movie. It was not in the theater lobby.” It wasn’t immediately clear how many shooters there were, but Meltzer said multiple shots were fired in the event, the latest in a string of shootings nationally. Police arrived to find one of the most seriously wounded people in the parking structure lobby and another in an elevator car on the fifth floor of the six-story structure. Both are in critical condition at University Medical Center in Las Vegas. A third victim was found near the street in front of the elevator lobby. He was treated at the scene for an injury that Meltzer said wasn’t believed to be life-threatening. The wounded were described as males, ages currently unknown. Meltzer said investigators don’t believe the confrontation between the two groups was gang-related, but they were still trying to determine their relationship. Police and property security officers closed exits and entrances to the Showcase Mall parking structure for more than two hours while they investigated.
Fans typically attend a Marilyn Manson concert expecting something scary to take place – but not like this. At a show in Saskatoon, Canada last night, the singer was rocking out to “Beautiful People” when (around the 1:15 mark below) he suddenly stopped and fell over on stage. Songs like the acoustic-R&B “How to Love” and the John Legend-laced “So Special” show Weezy’s penchant for crafting female-friendly radio hits, while tracks like “6 Foot 7 Foot” and “John” revolve around Tunechi’s rap roots. The album’s “Intro,” “Interlude” and “Outro” also celebrate rapping for rapping’s sake. On the “Intro,” Wayne raps solo over a pounding, bottom-heavy beat supplied by newcomer Willy Will. Halfway through the album, Missouri MC Tech N9ne and Outkast spitter Andre 3000 appear atop the same instrumental on the C4 “Interlude.” Finally, on the LP’s “Outro,” Bun B, Nas, Shyne and Busta Rhymes take their turns over that beat. As standalone cuts, the three tracks feature some pretty aggressive rap bars, but we couldn’t help but notice that if Wayne were to string them together into one track, it might have been one of rap’s most star-studded posse cuts. “I actually close out Tha Carter IV. I’m the last voice you hear on Tha Carter IV, ” Busta Rhymes pointed out to MTV News on the 2011 VMA , black carpet. “It’s special because I didn’t know that’s what [Wayne] was gonna do with it.” With his rapid-fire verse, Busta boasts of his “uncompetewitable” rhyme style before toasting to Weezy by rhyming, “OK, enough of that, now I’m out the door/ Tunechi, thanks for giving us a whole ‘nother classic with Tha Carter IV. ” “When we did the joint, he didn’t really tell us how he was gonna put it together. All I knew was that when it was done, it was me, Bun B, Nas and Shyne, and I was the last voice to be heard on the album, so I feel honored for that,” Busta said.
