She chopped her hair off in June of 2017 and said she wouldn’t be putting anymore unnecessary heat on it: “ I’m not straightening my hair again .” Soon after though, she put the short cut away and opted for an array of protective styles, from braids to detachable ponytails and wigs. Just yesterday, she showed off the results of all her protective efforts, sharing an image of the current state of her natural hair. We must say, it’s grown considerably since we last saw it. Taraji chose to give her hair natural hair a chance to be free from processing and straightening and the impact has not only been on the length of her strands, but the way she sees her crown. “[Black women] have shame when it comes to our hair,” she told the Huffington Post soon after cutting her hair off. “What we’ve been told, ‘Your hair is nappy.’ It’s not nappy, it’s curly. That’s a curl, that’s a coil. That’s energy leading up and I was like, we need to convey that message because I see a lot of girls, natural, is it for fashion or do you really understand what that is? Recently the OG Queen Bee took to Instagram Live to explain why she refused to do interviews for both Andy Cohen and the media in general. Revealing that she had some press set up for Thursday, Kim explained that she pulled out of all her obligations because “two of the major outlets wanted to be messy and my publicist and my manager made the executive decision to shut it down.” The “Lighters Up” rapper went on to state that “I refuse to f*ckin’ keep doing all of these interviews, publications and all of that sh*t if muthaf*ckas is not gonna respect who I am, what i’ve done, where i’m at now – put some f*ckin’ respect on my name, period.” According to Kim she was set up to appear on Access Hollywood , The Today Show and Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen , but apparently her team wasn’t feeling the direction one or all of these shows wanted to go with their interviews. Without going into specifics about what kind of “messy” Cohen (who she thought she had a cool relationship with) and others wanted to get into, the pint sized Brooklyn rapper stated that “If y’all don’t see me doing press, if y’all don’t see me doing certain things, it’s ’cause I’m fighting. I’m f**king fighting. I’m not f**king just about to have muthaf**kers not put respect on my name. So don’t act stupid. Don’t start asking all these dumb questions, ‘why she not doing this? why she not doing that?’ cause now y’all f*ckin’ know!” Well, we can’t blame her for pulling out of shows that she felt might’ve been looking to ask her questions she wasn’t comfortable answering. Source: Pose / FX Networks WARNING: Major spoilers ahead for episode 4 of “Pose:” If it felt that in the second season of Pose Candy Ferocity ( Angelica Ross ) was growing and developing into something bigger and better, you were not alone. While in the hit ballroom drama, Candy has always struggled, especially with choosing the correct category, she’d come a long way. Yes, she is still a mean girl who can read the girls and even threaten folks with that infamous hammer of hers, but she’s evolved a bit. She’s no longer the girl having strangers in basements inject faulty silicon in her rear, nor is she tagging behind former house mother Elektra Abundance Evangelista Wintour ( Dominique Jackson ) feeding off her scraps. Ms. Candy—as Pray Tell ( Billy Porter ) would say—had stepped up to become a co-mother, molding her own children and house, along with doing her damnedest to carve out her own lasting legacy. And as we jumped three years later to 1990 this season, we see how the girls—rather naively and annoyingly—have faith that Madonna’s hit song “Vogue” would bring them all from the shadows of this underground world into the bright lights of the Big Apple. As Candy said, she needed to the first one in the line of that mainstream gaze, because she has bigger dreams than winning trophies in the face category. She was destined to become a star in the outside world. She was looking to the future. Source: Pose / FX Networks Of course, we all wanted that for her, to see her rise and be successful like Angel (Indya Moore ), but in the fourth episode “ Never Knew Love Like This Before,” we realize that Candy “is never coming home.” Days after she’d gone missing, her bruised and bloody body was found, thrown in a seedy hotel closet like yesterday’s trash. See, Candy had to engage in survival sex work to keep her house afloat, but this time around, the danger too many vulnerable women like her face is what ended her life. Granted, it’s not like death is new to Pose . But the majority of those deaths have been from complications of AIDS, mostly taking the lives of Black and Latinx men. Meanwhile, many of the girls (outside of Blanca) seemed unscathed by the virus on-screen. But as Angelica Ross recently told me this season co-creator Ryan Murphy was clear that this season they would no longer be viewing these women’s world through “rose colored glasses.” But thankfully, her death wasn’t treated like an afterthought like Tara from True Blood or with blatant disregard like Missandei on Game of Thrones). As I recently pointed out for Shondaland , Candy’s storyline was treated with “the love, dignity and respect it deserved.” During Candy’s memorial, her fierce-as-ever ghost appeared in order to make amends with frenemies like Pray Tell, encourage Angel to carry on her torch to the next generation of trans girls like her and to reunite with her estranged parents who had refused to see their son as the woman she was born to be. Most importantly, Candy was no longer the butt of the ball’s jokes. In her final scene, she was able to fulfill her biggest goal before crossing over: To be the queen of the ballroom in a category she knew she could conquer, lip-syncing. But it’s important to point out that this stunning (and triggering moment) in television was also an example of art imitating life. In the iconic 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning , which Pose is heavily inspired by, Venus Xtravaganza’ promising life was ended short when her body was found in a “sleazy motel” four days after she’d been strangled. Like Candy, her killer was never caught. One would think that with time comes progress, but for trans women, specifically Black and Latinx trans women like Candy and Venus, that isn’t always the case. Yes, they are more visible in pop culture, but being seen doesn’t translate into safety. Just this year alone, eleven Black trans women in the U.S. have been murdered : Dana Martin. Jazzaline Ware. Ashanti Carmon. Claire Legato. Muhlaysia Booker. Michelle “Tamika” Washington. Paris Cameron. Chynal Lindsey. Chanel Scurlock. Zoe Spears. Brooklyn Lindsey. What’s even worse is that it’s estimated that the average lifespan for trans women is only 35-years-old. Think if that were the case for cisgender Black women. Think if every year you inch closer to 35, you inch closer to death. Every time you blow out your birthday candles you are reminded of ALL the years, happiness and dreams that will be robbed from you because you are brave enough to live your truth. That’s the real tragedy. All that potential, just lost. All of the gifts they can offer and receive from this world, gone. This is exactly what Candy’s fictional death represents—the dreams deferred of the real-life Black trans women we’ve lost and will continue to lose to this senseless, transphobic and crippling violence. Sadly, it’s happening on our watch. So if there was ever a time to stand up for Black trans women, it’s now. Now is the time to love and support our sisters by fighting for a better and more welcoming world that allows for them to live their fullest and longest lives. We owe them that. Most importantly, now is the time to ensure that when we say the names of the Candys of this world, we’re not just doing it in death, but celebrating them in life. Source: Columbia Police Department / Columbia Police Department Apparently the Simmons DNA runs long in the south. A man who resembles Darkman X is on the run for some gunplay. South Carolina police are looking for a man who bears a very strong resemblance to rapper DMX . So much so that the lawmen had to clear the MC’s name after a sketch of the culprit was released. The department stated the drawing was completed “with the assistance of a crime witness” who said that the gunman looked just like the Yonkers native. Columbia Police Department Deputy Chief Melron Kelly detailed the process that led to the doppleganger. ”We always let the witness dictate the process and how everything unfolds,” he explained. “We make sure the witness sees everything we do and is comfortable with whatever rendering that we make.” He went on to confirm that DMX is not a suspect in case. “I guarantee you he’s not,” Kelly said. The official police report states that “on June 19, 2019, CPD officers were initially dispatched to the 4400 block of Blossom Street. Upon arrival, they located the 27-year-old male victim outside of an apartment complex with an injury to the lower body.” The suspect is described as being a tall, slender black male, possibly 30-years-old with a short haircut and well-groomed beard. Back in June, Dog’s Most Wanted star Beth Chapman passed away at age 51 after battling throat cancer for yeras. He family, friends, and fans continue to grieve her. Now, her daughter Cecily has shared a heartbreaking throwback photo as a tribute to her mom. Take a look: Cecily B Chapman took to Instagram to share a throwback photo of her late mother’s amazing nails on the steering wheel. “My heart is so heavy,” Cecily admits. For illustrative effect, she then includes a bright red broken heart emoji. Speaking of her beloved mother, Cecily writes: “she was so amazing.” “I was so lucky….” she acknowledges. Cecily then shared that she had gotten a similar nail job, even though she had cried the entire time. Fans may not have known Beth like her children did, but they are mourning right alongside them. In the comment below this heartfelt post, affection and emotional support poured in to the grieving daughter. “Take her legacy and model her grace,” suggests one fan. That same follower adds: “That is the best gift you could give to honor her.” That is some very touching advice. “So so sad. so many hearts are heavy,” observes another fan. That same follower adds: “I miss her I could only imagine what your all feeling.” “[Stay] strong,” the kind commenter instructs. “She’s watching over each and every single one of u guys.” “She loves u all so much so much,” the fan emphasizes. “I bet her love is so strong that you can feel it in the air she is all around you guys,” the follower concludes. “Living in your [heart].” “Your mom was an amazing person,” another fan affirms. Of that, no one has any doubts. She was deeply memorable both on and off camera. That takes a very special type of person. The follower adds: “And a part of her lives on in you.” “The loss of a parent by far is one of the hardest things in life to deal with and []accept]…” the commenter acknowledges. The fan then expresses: “I know god has a plan for your Mom to be taken so soon.” “She is amazing,” affirms another commenter, notably using the present tense. That fan continues, still in the present tense: “And you are very lucky.” The commenter explains: “just because she’s physically not here anymore doesn’t mean she’s gone.” Others kept it simple, short, and sweet. “I miss her beautiful smile,” Cecily wrote in another post several days ago. Initially, the reality star and mother had been declared cancer-free after undergoing surgery to remove the cancer. Unfortunately, it returned with a vengeance. Beth had expressed that she saw her renewed cancer battle as a test of faith. She even apologized to her fans and to her loved ones for not using every possible weapon in her fight. As Beth explained, chemotherapy is just not something that she wanted to undergo — no matter the consequences. The news that Jenelle Evans and David Eason had regained custody of their kids hit Teen Mom 2 fans like a crushing blow to the temple. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that Jenelle and David regained custody of most of their kids, considering her son Jace and his son Kaden will continue to reside with more stable relatives. It would also be more accurate to say that former Teen Mom 2 fans were stunned by the news, as many vowed to never again support the series that made this appalling situation possible, even though Jenelle was fired from the show several months ago. Anyway, as when Donald Trump was elected president or the New England Patriots won yet another Super Bowl, reports of the judge’s ruling left many with the feeling that the bad guys had pulled off a surprise victory. But according to one person who’s very well-acquainted with Jenelle and her parenting style, the situation played out in the best way possible, and the Eason kids are back where they belong. Heather Griffith is the sister of Jenelle’s second baby daddy, Nathan Griffith, who was as stunned as everyone else when his son Kaiser was returned to The Land by a judge who had apparently been experimenting with LSD. Heather says she only really got to know Jenelle once the kids were taken away (?!), and she claims that the mother of her nephew has been misrepresented by the media and is actually a devoted parent (?!?!?) who deserves custody of her kids. “I think a lot of things have been exaggerated and blown out of proportion. I don’t see Jenelle as an unfit parent or someone that doesn’t love her kids,” Heather tells Hollywood Life . “I watch her go through this process, and she’s tried to remain so positive but she was just so sad.” Heather goes on to say that all the coverage of Jenelle’s arrests, accusations of neglect, and frequent substance abuse episodes are nothing more than fake news: “After getting to know her over the past few months — we recently became closer when the kids were taken away — I don’t see her as this horrible, vindictive person that she’s constantly being played out to be,” Heather says, “I think she is just constantly under attack and I don’t think that she’s unfit as a parent.” Nathan, of course, strongly disagrees, and he’ll continue to fight for custody of Kaiser in hearings that are set to begin next month. “I think just with her situation I would be more fit as a parent,” Nathan told TMZ earlier this week, adding that he believed Kaiser isn’t receiving proper “love and affection.” Heather says she supports Nathan in his fight for custody, but somehow, she’s also 100 percent #TeamJenelle these days. “I have talked to her pretty much ever since the kids were taken from her,” Heather tells Hollywood Life. “We check in with each other every day to make sure things are going well throughout the whole process.” In order to appreciate how weird this situation is, we encourage you to pause for a moment and imagine becoming besties with your sibling’s violent, abusive ex-fiance — but only after that person has her kids taken away following a scathing CPS investigation. ee”We’re building a friendship now. It’s hard because Nate’s my brother and I can never be in her corner, but I can referee and make sure she gets a fair fight. I see so much promise and potential in her,” says Heather. “She’s a go-getter; she’s doing what she has to support her family,” Nathan’s sister adds. “One thing I can say about her is that she totally respects the rules of not saying anything bad about my brother,” she continues. “She has never bashed my brother to me or said one bad thing [about him].” Well, to be honest, “rule-respecting go-getter” isn’t exactly the description that jumps to mind when we think about Jenelle Evans. But then again, maybe Heather Griffith knows much more about the former Teen Mom 2 star than we do.
