Church Gives Free Handgun Lessons According to WFAA Texas lawmakers passed several bills involving concealed handgun licenses on Saturday, including one that would reduce the number of hours required to get one, and another tweaking the rules for renewal. In North Texas, we’ve seen crowds packing free handgun license classes, including one on Saturday in an unexpected place — First Baptist Church Wylie. The congregation on this day was led not by a preacher, but a teacher giving a free concealed handgun class. “I have been thinking about doing it for a long time, but because it was free, there was no reason not to do it,” said Andrew Penrose. The sanctuary offered the no-charge CHL course to anyone meeting state eligibility requirements. “We’re doing it to bless the community,” explained Scott Phillips, who serves as children’s pastor at the church. There was no shortage of takers for the one-day course. “There’s a lot of crazy stuff going on in the world,” said one man. “School shootings and movie theater shootings… you just never know what is going to happen,” Beth Owen said. “I want to be able to protect myself and protect my friends and family,” added Richard Davis. Those who came to the church for this special teaching did so for different reasons. “I am taking this class because I believe in my Second Amendment rights,” Chris Alosi said. They share a common belief that they are better off with a handgun… and the knowledge of how to effectively use it. Organizers estimate the free class saved participants between a $100-$140 each.
