Colbie Caillat Recalls Breaking Dad’s Grammy On ‘When I Was 17’

The season premiere of ‘When I Was 17,’ also featuring Bow Wow and Christopher Mintz-Passe, airs Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. By Nuzhat Naoreen Colbie Caillat on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV Colbie Caillat knows the value of a Grammy: The singer/songwriter already has two to her name. But back when she was 17 years old, an out-of-control house party nearly destroyed one of her father’s own coveted awards. On the season premiere of “When I Was 17,” airing this Saturday at 11 a.m. ET, Caillat tells all about that night. “When I was 17, we used to have parties at my parents’ house all the time. This one time, hundreds and hundreds of people showed up at my house, and we thought it was really cool because it was like, ‘Oh my god, all these people came!’ ” Caillat recalls. The more people piled in though, the more difficult it became to keep the party under control. “Everyone was drinking way too much, and a huge fight broke out. It was just one of those crazy parties,” she says. “Different schools, no one got along. And this one guy jumped on my parents’ pool table and jumped off of it to tackle this other guy, which then they hit into the wall, and there was blood on the wall. And alcohol was spit on our pool table, the front door got broken, stuff got stolen.” The front door wasn’t the only thing that got broken though. “The worst part about it is that my dad’s Grammy was up above our TV, and during the party, it got knocked over and it fell on the ground and broke in half,” Caillat recalls. So, how did Caillat’s father react after he learned his trophy had been split in two? Tune into the premiere of “When I Was 17” to find out. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Bow Wow, Christopher Mintz-Passe and Colbie Caillat — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. Bow Wow Recalls Driving Test Woes On ‘When I Was 17’

The season premiere of ‘When I Was 17,’ also featuring Christopher Mintz-Passe and Colbie Caillat, airs Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. By Nuzhat Naoreen Bow Wow on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV At 17 years old, Bow Wow bought himself his first car — a Maserati — but that doesn’t mean he was able to drive it. On the season premiere of “When I Was 17” this Saturday at 11 a.m. ET, the hip-hop star recalls how his initial attempt at taking the driver’s license exam didn’t exactly go as planned. “When I was 17, it was time for me to step it up and walk in the DMV and go ahead and get my license,” Bow Wow says. “Walked in, sat at the computer, doing the test, doing the test. They start asking the feet: ‘How far do you have to stand behind the car?’ Now, this is killing my brain right now. The next thing you know, the computer tells me [to] go see the lady at the desk, and I’m thinking, ‘All right. I passed.’ ” Not quite. While Bow Wow, who at 17 already had a successful career with a couple of albums under his belt, felt confident he’d aced the exam, the results showed otherwise. “Went up there, was as arrogant as possible, like, ‘I’m ready. Where do I go take my picture at?’ ” he explains. “And the lady said, ‘No. You failed.’ I was like, ‘What?’ ” Bow Wow may have been surprised, but his mother was not. “I told him, ‘Bow, you have to study this driver’s book,’ ” his mother, Teresa, recalls. Of course, her son didn’t take the advice. “I was really hurt because that’s every 17-year-old’s dream is to get their license,” Bow Wow says. He didn’t give up, though. Bow Wow, who ended up purchasing the Maserati anyway after failing the test, tried again — and again. Find out how he finally managed to get behind the wheel on the season premiere of “When I Was 17.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Bow Wow, Christopher Mintz-Passe and Colbie Caillat — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. Tracy Reese Combines Comfort And Glamour At New York Fashion Week

‘She’s a total champion of individuality and walking to the beat of your own tune,’ actress Gabrielle Union tells MTV News. By Nuzhat Naoreen, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Tracy Reese’s show during New York Fashion Week 2011 Photo: Getty Images It’s not uncommon for clothes that hit the runway to be over-the-top or extravagant, but at the Tracy Reese show during New York fashion week, it was all about wearability. Reese presented a collection that featured feminine frocks and loose tunics in a range of colors during her show. “It was really about texture,” Reese told MTV News. “Texture, comfort, protection, glamour: How do we put all those together and create some really cool looks?” Reese combined her key elements to produce a variety of original styles, from an eye-catching full-sleeved, hot-pink dress to a black-and-white number in alternating patterns. “She’s a total champion of individuality and walking to the beat of your own tune,” said actress Gabrielle Union, who was in the audience alongside Julia Stiles. Fur, a big trend on the runways this year, was also a key element of some of her pieces, including a turquoise dress that was accented with a black belt and fur neck wrap and a white dress with silver accents, which Reese paired with a beige fur coat. Reese didn’t stray from her message of accessibility when it came to styling her models’ hair. “I wanted the hair to be simple and tousled like something you could do yourself and it gives a relaxed feeling to the clothing,” Reese said. Sarah Palin Slams ‘American Idol’ For Hosting ‘Talent Deprived’ Contestants

In her upcoming memoir, the former vice-presidential candidate labels unskilled ‘Idol’ competitors ‘victims of the cult of self-esteem.’ By Nuzhat Naoreen Sarah Palin Photo: Jewel Samad/ AFP/ Getty Images “American Idol” may entertain millions of viewers, but Sarah Palin apparently isn’t one of them. In excerpts from her upcoming memoir, “America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag,” leaked by Gawker , the former vice-presidential candidate slams the reality show for hosting what she refers to as “talent deprived” contestants. “Did you ever wonder where the producers of ‘American Idol’ come up with the seemingly endless supply of people who can’t sing but are deluded enough to get in front of a national television audience and screech out a song anyway?” Palin asks in the book. Palin, whose daughter Bristol Palin is currently on the reality show “Dancing With the Stars,” goes on to say those unqualified contestants who appear on “Idol” are “victims of the cult of self-esteem.” “No one they’ve encountered in their lives — from their parents to their teachers to their president — wanted them to feel bad by hearing the truth,” she writes. “So they grew up convinced they could become big pop stars like Michael Jackson.” But it’s not all criticism. Palin praises former judge Simon Cowell for dishing out hard truths to the competitors. “Cowell can be a little harsh at times, but he upholds the highest standards and something in us recognizes and responds to that,” she writes. “Unfortunately Cowell is almost alone in his willingness to tell hard truths.” Palin further argues that “hard truths” are necessary, as “a growing chorus of voices is trying to convince our kids that hard work isn’t necessary anymore.” Palin’s memoir is set to be released on Tuesday (November 23). What do you think about Sarah Palin’s “American Idol” critique? Tell us in the comments.

‘The Hills’ Ladies Go Glam For Red-Carpet Finale

While Kristin, Lo and the rest of the girls opt for head-turning mini-dresses, Brody and Frankie go way casual. By Nuzhat Naoreen Kristin Cavallari Photo: John Shearer / WireImage During six seasons of “The Hills,” the ladies always managed to leave an impression when it came to fashion. It was no different when the stylish castmembers arrived to walk the red carpet at Los Angeles’ Roosevelt Hotel, just before the show’s series finale was set to air on Tuesday night. Although Lauren Conrad , Whitney Port and Heidi Montag were notably absent from the pre-show carpet, the rest of the “Hills” cast showed up in their finest to celebrate “The Hills Live: A Hollywood Ending” aftershow. And while the guys stepped out in casual looks, the girls mostly opted for designer mini-dresses. Lo Bosworth, one of the first to arrive, bared her shoulders in a short, white Tadashi Shoji dress that she said was straight from the designer’s latest runway collection. Her pal Kristin Cavallari had one of the night’s standout looks, decked out in a gorgeous form-fitting, flesh-tone dress that was delicately crisscrossed with silver sparkles. Unfortunately, though Kristin’s dress was generating lots of talk, the reality-TV star couldn’t recall the name of its designer. (Her co-star Frankie Delgado tried in vain to help by searching for a tag.) Both Lo and Kristin opted for neutral colors on the red carpet, but Audrina Patridge mixed things up a bit, arriving in a bright purple mini with cutouts at the waist and along the shoulder. Like Audrina, Stephanie Pratt also opted for color. And while Stephanie’s dress might have been a last-minute find — she told MTV News she’d gone shopping the morning of the finale — it was a really good one. Her strapless H

Lady Gaga Fans Camp Out For Days For ‘Today’ Performance

‘I wanted to cry. It was amazing. It was beautiful,’ one little monster says after Friday’s set. By Nuzhat Naoreen, with additional reporting by Kimberly Reynolds Lady Gaga performs on the “Today” show on Friday Photo: Jemal Countess/ Getty Images NEW YORK — When Derrek Lutz’s family kicked him out of his house for being homosexual, it was Lady Gaga who helped him cope. “My family told me that I was a freak,” said Lutz, 18, from North Cape May, New Jersey. “My whole life was turned upside down, but Gaga made me so comfortable to be myself and dress the way I do, and now I don’t care what anyone thinks.” That’s why on Thursday night, Lutz joined thousands of other fans in the scorching heat to stand in line outside of Rockefeller Plaza to see Gaga’s “Today” show performance early Friday morning (July 9). For Lutz, like many of the fans who spoke to MTV News, it was an opportunity to see a woman whose music inspired them and, in some cases, deeply affected their lives. “She makes me so happy to be myself, she makes me love myself,” Lutz said. The free concert was especially significant to fans who couldn’t afford to buy tickets to her on-going Monster Ball tour. “We can’t afford real tickets, and we’re such big Lady Gaga fans, we had to be here to see her,” said Joshua Rivera, 19, from Towaco, New Jersey, who arrived at Rockefeller Plaza two days early so he could be the first person in line. “I’m literally running on energy,” Josh said, adding that he hadn’t slept since he got there. Felicia Giunta, 19, from Long Island, New York, had already seen Gaga at Madison Square Garden earlier in the week, but that didn’t stop her from camping out for “Today.” “I look up to her so much,” said Felicia, an aspiring dancer. “After I get cut, she’s the first one on my iPod, and it inspires me to keep going.” Lutz caught up with MTV after the show and said the overnight wait was well worth it. “I wanted to cry. It was amazing. It was beautiful,” Lutz said after Gaga’s rain-drenched performance. “Everyone around me was screaming and I just had my eyes closed. I was just taking it all in.” How long would you wait in line to see Lady Gaga? Talk about it in the comments. Justin Bieber Fans Skip Prom, Drive For Days To Watch Him On ‘Today’

‘He’s amazing, he’s so worth it,’ says fan who drove 17 hours to see Friday’s performance. By Nuzhat Naoreen, with additional reporting by Kimberly Reynolds Justin Bieber greets a fan after his “Today Show” performance on June 4 Photo: Janette Pellegrini/ WireImage Becca Jude and Sinead Byrne, both 18, were supposed to be at their high school prom in New Jersey on Thursday. Instead, they were in New York City, standing in line to watch Justin Bieber perform live on the “Today” show early Friday morning. “All our friends think we’re crazy,” said Becca, who was planning to join her friends on a trip to the Jersey Shore before she found out about the concert. “We have no regrets. He’s worth it.” She was just one of many dedicated fans who skipped events, drove for hours and camped out overnight just to get a glance at Bieber onstage. Megan Hazelwood, 17, convinced her parents to drive 17 hours from their home in Kansas City, Kansas, setting off three days ago just to make it to the show on time. “He’s amazing, he’s so worth it,” said Megan, who’s organizing a buyout of Justin Bieber’s album in Kansas City. Decked out in a black Justin Bieber T-shirt, she explained that she convinced her dad to tag along on the ride by telling him it would a good “bonding experience.” “They just love me,” she said of her parents. “They just love me a lot.” For many parents, like Julie Williamson from New Canaan, Connecticut, accompanying their kids to the concert was an opportunity to experience the excitement themselves. “I’m reliving my youth,” Williamson said, admitting that she has officially caught Bieber Fever too. Joe Pezzino said he drove his daughter seven hours from Buffalo, New York, in order to share something with her. “It’s one of those things you do with your kids,” he said, adding that he likes Bieber’s music because it’s clean. While many fans had been planning to attend this concert since it was first announced, 12-year-old Jissed Rosario didn’t even know she’d be coming. “I didn’t know I was coming here today; it was my birthday surprise,” said Jissed, whose uncle drove her to the concert because he knew she was a huge fan. “My teacher complained about how much I like Justin Bieber at the report card conference,” said Jisette, who also writes poems about Bieber and talks about him nonstop. “I’m basically the number one fan in the whole school.” Would your parents camp out with you to see your idol onstage? Would you do it with your kids? Talk about it in the comments. Related Photos Bieber Fever Outside Of NBC New York Related Artists Justin Bieber
