Mark Jackson Says Stephen Curry Is “Hurting” Basketball, Promptly Slandered

Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry (30) stands next to head coach Mark Jackson against the New Orleans Hornets during an NBA basketball game in Oakland, Calif., Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012. (AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez) Mark Jackson used to coach Steph Curry and was a deft point guard himself, but a comment he dropped during yesterday’s Cavaliers vs. Warriors has many shaking their head in disgust. According to Jackson, Chef Curry is “hurting” basketball since he hits all those three point shots.  Continue

Khloe & Lamar Recap: The Trade

High drama on Khloe & Lamar this week, and for once, it wasn’t even all contrived. Yes, the Dallas Mavericks’ trade for Lamar Odom might not go down as a brilliant move from a personnel standpoint, but it will always have this footnote: It produced a genuine, unscripted reaction from a Kardashian. Well done, Dallas. Fans of the couple (assuming there are some) have been looking forward to this episode since news of Lamar’s trade broke. So let’s recap it all … The NBA lockout is over! Bring on the massive paychecks! Plus 20 ! Oh, and you might be traded, Lamar’s agent says. Ouch. Minus 30 . “That stuff is more stressful than not playing basketball,” Lamar says. “It’s part of our business, but hopefully I can stay in L.A.” Except that some reports suggested he had actually asked for the trade or was at least consulted all along. Minus 25 . “Our world can turn upside down,” Khlo

Quote Of The Day: Fired “Chink In The Armor” ESPN Employee Says His Wife Is Asian

This should be all the more reason why he should have NOT said that ish about Jeremy Lin in the first place: An ESPN anchor suspended for using a racially-loaded term in reference to Knicks phenom Jeremy Lin defended himself on Twitter today, as the network sacked another employee for using the phrase in a headline on its website. “My wife is Asian, would never intentionally say anything to disrespect her and that community,” Anchor Max Bretos tweeted. “Wanted 2 apologize 2 all those I have upset. Not done with any racial reference. Despite intention, phrase was inappropriate in this context.” That phrase was “Chink in the armor,” a term Bretos used on air following Lin’s poor performance during the Knicks’ loss to the lowly New Orleans Hornets Friday. Bretos was suspended 30 days, and a writer who used the same phrase in a headline on ESPN’s mobile site was fired; The network did not release that employee’s name. While it can refer to a weakness, the phrase is also a racial slur against Asians. Lin, a California native of Chinese descent, is the first Asian-American to start an NBA game and has become an international sensation since the previously-unknown player exploded off the bench and led the Knicks on a seven-game winning streak. “I don’t think it was on purpose or whatever, but (at) the same time they have apologized. And so from my end I don’t care anymore,” Lin said after leading the Knicks to a 104-97 win over Dallas today. “Have to learn to forgive, and I don’t even think that was intentional. Or hopefully not.” ESPN called the phrase “offensive and inappropriate” in a statement today. “We again apologize, especially to Mr. Lin,” ESPN wrote. “His accomplishments are a source of great pride to the Asian-American community, including the Asian-American employees at ESPN. Through self-examination, improved editorial practices and controls, and response to constructive criticism, we will be better in the future.” SMH. He’s photographed above with his half-Asian baby. LeBron James Launches Twitter Feed

Basketball star accumulates 200,000 followers in 24 hours as he decides which NBA team to sign with next. By Kyle Anderson LeBron James Photo: Elsa/Getty Images For the past week, the country has been eagerly anticipating the answer to a pressing question. No, not “How will the Gulf of Mexico recover from this oil spill?” Rather, it is “Where will LeBron James play basketball next?” The dynamic and multitalented James, who is friends with Jay-Z and who last year starred in a documentary about his high school hoops team , became a free agent on July 1 and has been fielding offers from a number of NBA teams for his services. While he searches for a new contract (and possibly a new city), he recently acquired something he has never had before: his own verified Twitter account. James made his Twitter debut on Tuesday, identifying himself as the “King of Akron” in his bio description. “Hello World, the Real King James is in the Building ‘Finally,’ ” he wrote in his first (and so far only) tweet. “My Brother @oneandonlycp3 gas’d me up to jump on board so I’m here. Haaaa.” Clearly there was demand for James’ thoughts on the service, as he has accumulated nearly 216,000 followers in less than 24 hours. James was referring to fellow basketball star (and free agent) Chris Paul, who has been a star for the New Orleans Hornets and is also in search of a new home. Rumors have swirled that Paul and James would be signed together as a package deal, though they are both playing their decisions close to the vest. “Couldn’t convince him to tell me which team he’s goin to but convinced him to join twitter lol…my brother from another mother,” Paul tweeted . On Tuesday night, James said he would announce his decision during a special ESPN telecast on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET. Oddsmakers seem to believe he is headed to the Chicago Bulls, but the Cleveland Cavaliers (his team for the past six seasons), Miami Heat, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers have all made pitches to him. Chris Paul Recalls Having The ‘X-Factor’ On ‘When I Was 17’

New Orleans Hornets star and his high school friends called their crew the X-Factor and even had hoodies made. By MTV News staff Chris Paul Photo: MTV News Seven years before he made his third NBA All-Star team, five years before he played for the U.S. in the Olympics, and three years before he won the NBA’s Rookie of the Year Award, Chris Paul was just a 17-year-old high school kid who enjoyed hanging out with his friends as much as shooting hoops. OK, maybe not as much — Paul was named North Carolina’s Mr. Basketball during his senior year, after all. But as we learn in the upcoming episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” the New Orleans Hornets point guard has as many memories of chilling with his pals as he does about raining 3’s over their heads. And not all of those memories come off looking so cool years later. Case in point: the crew he and his friends created. “We had a little crew called the X-Factor,” Paul revealed. The group was comprised mostly of football players, with the 6-foot-tall Paul contributing his fast feet, if not bulk. “We felt like we needed something to set ourselves apart, so we had jackets made,” he said. “Then going down the sleeve it said ‘X-Factor.’ ” The sweatshirts were white with mint-green graphics. There were hand-drawn, comic book-style musclemen placed here and there, a photo silkscreened on the back and a quote from Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Paul and his boys thought they were pretty cool. Paul’s brother CJ was less than impressed. “I just remember Chris came home, had a hoodie that said ‘X-Factor’ on it,” CJ laughed. “I thought they were very lame.” But to this day, Paul remains proud of his crew and their gear. “There’s always going to be haters,” he said. “But I think they were more envious, because whatever they were a part of would never be bigger and better than the X-Factor.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Chris Paul, Pitbull and Vanessa Minnillo — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.
