‘Gnomeo And Juliet’ Stars Talk ‘Overacting’ For Animated Flick

‘You have to emanate every kind of sound you can ever muster up,’ Emily Blunt tells MTV News. By Kara Warner James McAvoy and Emily Blunt Photo: MTV News From the outside looking in, the world of voice acting holds an allure that seems glamorous in a different way than traditional acting. There’s no wardrobe to fit, no hair and makeup to arrange, no far-off location to travel to, and so forth. All an actor has to do is show up and speak into a microphone. According to the lead voices behind “Gnomeo and Juliet” (an animated take on Shakespeare’s classic), James McAvoy and Emily Blunt, there are indeed a few benefits. But it’s definitely not as basic as some might think. MTV News recently spoke to Blunt and McAvoy, who told us effective voice work requires a few tricks. “I feel like you have to overact the entire time because you don’t realize how flat your voice sounds when it’s faceless and expressionless,” Blunt said. “So you actually have to over-enunciate and really leap around to add some kind of liveliness to the way you speak,” she explained. “It was interesting. We were told often to smile while we were talking because it actually lightens your voice up. It was interesting.” McAvoy added that you can actually hear the smile in the voice. “It was quite interesting. Even when the character is not supposed to be smiling, they’d like to hear the smile,” he said. Blunt also revealed that a few of her scenes were a bit embarrassing because she had to run in place in order to act out certain action sequences. “They need reactions from you falling on something or swinging or grabbing a hold of something,” she explained. “So that’s when you have to emanate every kind of sound you can ever muster up. It’s very strange.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Gnomeo and Juliet.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Mechanic’ Star Jason Statham Talks Allure Of Playing Tough Guys

‘If I do go into something else, it will be because it is good,’ the action hero tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Jason Statham Photo: MTV News Those familiar with the work of Jason Statham know that he doesn’t really do “fluffy” films or romantic comedies. He is a man of action and general butt-kicking/badass-ery: see “The Transporter,” “The Bank Job,” “Crank” and “The Expendables,” to name a few. Statham’s new film, “The Mechanic,” in which he plays a trained assassin who takes the son of his former mentor (Ben Foster) under his wing, is no different. There is a lot of action and a lot of ass-kicking, just the way his fans like it. When MTV News caught up with Statham, we asked him if he felt at all typecast, and whether he’d take on a nice-guy role in a romantic comedy someday. “You know, it’s tough, because people will always keep saying to me, ‘Do you only see yourself doing action movies?’ and, I don’t know,” Statham said. “It’s very difficult because one day I might be asked to do something that is of quality in a different genre, but the films that come from different genres aren’t that great,” he argued. “So I end up not doing them because once you make a mistake in that area, you can’t go back. So, if I do go into something else, it will be because it is good.” But Foster told us his co-star doesn’t just play a tough guy onscreen, but rather makes each performance unique by infusing them with “vulnerability.” “If you’re a tough guy, and Jason is, the hardest part is showing vulnerability,” Foster explained. “And it’s working in ‘The Bank Job’ and in ‘The Mechanic’ here, and other films. He brings a lot of quiet heart to it. And it’s difficult stuff because movie viewers aren’t looking for that necessarily,” he said. “But Jason is always being a humanity to [something] behind the bullets.” Are you fan of Jason Statham’s action roles? ‘Little Fockers’ Director On Sequel

‘It’s funny because the end has kind of a setup for a sequel,’ Paul Weitz says. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Ben Stiller in “Little Fockers” Photo: Universal Studios/DW Studios As the “Fockers” franchise has been wont to do throughout its 10-year run, the third installment in the highly successful franchise, “Little Fockers,” brought in major box-office dollars once again during its opening weekend. This more than proves that it doesn’t matter that audiences had to wait six years between “Meet the Fockers” and the latest film: They like to see Robert DeNiro get silly with Ben Stiller. And Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand, for that matter. Given the success of “Little Fockers,” the next question on inquiring minds is, “When are they shooting a sequel?” When we caught up with director Paul Weitz recently during the press tour for “Fockers,” we asked him what talk he’d heard about a potential fourth film. “There’s been none with me,” Weitz said, indicating that this directorial romp with the “Fockers” will be his one and only. “I would be the first in line to buy a ticket [to the fourth film],” he said. But even though it sounds like Weitz won’t be involved in moving the Fockers forward, he had a pretty good idea of why people think there might be one planned. “It’s funny because the end has kind of a setup for a sequel [minor spoiler alert ahead!], where they say ‘We’re buying the house two doors down’ ” Weitz said. “Which was really a last-second thought by [screenwriter] John Hamburg. It wasn’t sort of a calculated ‘Alright, what’s the sequel going to be,’ ” he explained. “But it does seem like a good setup for a sequel!” Would you like to see another “Fockers” film? Robert Pattinson Is ‘Extraordinarily Attractive,’ Admits Reese Witherspoon

Actress marvels at the ‘fervor’ around her ‘Water for Elephants’ co-star. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Reese Witherspoon Photo: MTV News Reese Witherspoon became a household name in the late ’90s with a string of scene-stealing turns in films like “Pleasantville” and “Election.” Around the same time, Leonardo DiCaprio was transforming from teen heartthrob to mature Hollywood A-lister, thanks to the nearly $2 billion dollar success of “Titanic.” Over a decade later, Witherspoon has been thinking back to that pop culture period. It’s the only way she can make sense of the overwhelming popularity of her “Water for Elephants” co-star Robert Pattinson . “The only thing I can compare it to is when Leo was in ‘Titanic,’ ” she told MTV News while promoting her upcoming movie “How Do You Know.” “It was that kind of fervor about a person. The women lining up outside the set — it was unbelievable — till 5 o’clock in the morning waiting to just glimpse him.” The Tennessee set of “Water for Elephants” was basically no different than what happens when the “Twilight” vamp goes anywhere. As director Francis Lawrence told us in the fall, “[E]very day there would be, like, 50 people [staked out] … . [T]here would be people camped out in the hallways of our hotel. All day, all night long, it didn’t matter. People were there to try to catch a glimpse.” Witherspoon, of course, got an up-close-and-personal glimpse of RPattz, and she was happy to report back to us: “He is extraordinarily attractive. I’m not gonna lie,” she said. “Robert is such a great guy from a great family,” she explained. “That’s the thing that’s so funny. He’s not really this bad boy; he’s just a great guy and really worked hard on ‘Water for Elephants.’ He really worked long hours, long days. He looks totally different in the movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “How Do You Know.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Miley Cyrus And Liam Hemsworth Split

Disney star and Australian actor have parted ways, Hemsworth’s rep confirms. By Mawuse Ziegbe Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ Getty Images Miley Cyrus is ending the summer as a single lady. The teen queen has split from her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth after more than a year of dating. Hemsworth’s PR representative confirmed the “Can’t Be Tamed” singer and her beefy Australian beau have officially called it quits. “It’s true,” the actor’s rep told RadarOnline.com . The news comes after reports that the couple were getting serious. According to Radar, Cyrus recently purchased a $3.4 million house, not far from her parents’ California home, where Hemsworth was a frequent guest. Hemsworth and Cyrus struck up a romance after meeting on the film set of “The Last Song” in 2009. The pop star said earlier this year that although she wasn’t on the lookout for a boyfriend, Hemsworth won her over with his gentlemanly charm. “I kind of just wanted to focus on my work. I tend to hide behind my work sometimes,” Cyrus said on “Ellen” in March. “But I met him, and he opened the door for me, and I was like, I have been in L.A. for three years and I don’t think any guy has actually opened the door for me. It wasn’t that he wanted the job. That’s just who he is. I was like, ‘Wow, that is super-impressive.’ I actually turned to the director and said, ‘He’s got the job.’ He’s hot and he opened the door. Excellent.” Cyrus, who dropped her latest album, Can’t Be Tamed, in June, said that much of the LP was inspired by her romance with Hemsworth. “There are a lot of songs that are about Liam,” Cyrus told MTV News when Tamed was released. “I tell him every one’s about him,” she quipped. Nikki Reed Looks Forward To ‘Family’ Reunion For ‘Breaking Dawn’

‘We love each other a lot, and I think we’re sad this is coming to an end,’ she tells MTV News of her ‘Twilight’ castmates. By Kara Warner Nikki Reed Photo: MTV News With “Breaking Dawn” set to start filming sometime this fall, it’s only a matter of time until the “Twilight Saga” wraps up for good. So when Nikki Reed stopped by MTV News recently to talk about her upcoming indie film “Last Day of Summer,” we had to ask the actress what she’s looking forward to most when production begins on “Dawn,” the series’ two-part finale. “Just seeing everyone again,” she said. “We’ve been making these [movies] for a couple of years now, and this year seems to have gone by really fast.” Aside from the press campaigns surrounding “Eclipse,” Reed said she and her co-stars haven’t seen each other as frequently as in recent years, given their suddenly in-demand status. “We’ve all gone off and had other jobs,” she explained, adding that it is very different from a couple of years ago after the first film was released. “I found after the first ‘Twilight’ movie, we were all sitting around L.A., going ‘Hey, aren’t we supposed to work a lot? Isn’t this supposed to open doors?’ We’ve spent a lot of time together [in the past], and in this past year, I haven’t really seen anybody.” Reed said she’s most excited to be reunited with her “family” again. “Just going back to being with the family, because we love each other a lot, and I think we’re sad this is coming to an end,” she said. What are you most looking forward to from “Breaking Dawn”? Let us know in the comments! Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner Dish On Her Culinary Skills

‘I get really embarrassed when people ask me what I cook, for some reason,’ ‘Eclipse’ star says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart attends a New York screening of “Eclipse” on Monday Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage Apparently, when Kristen Stewart isn’t making movies, visiting talk shows or dodging paparazzi, the actress is quite the foodie and budding chef. “I cooked dinner for 20 people; I was really proud of myself,” the 20-year-old told MTV News at the red carpet for a special screening of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” in New York on Monday night. “I get really embarrassed when people ask me what I cook, for some reason,” she added. “I shouldn’t say that I cook anymore. There was like a big BBQ situation and, like, a bunch of steaks and veggies, and I made chicken piccata. I’m so embarrassed right now. But I made homemade marinara sauce starting at, like, 2 in the afternoon. It wasn’t done until 8. It was incredible. The ‘Twilight’ cast showed up.” But even though Taylor Lautner is a fan of Stewart’s cooking, he didn’t get an invitation to the big feast. Maybe it was a vampires-only meal? “I have sampled her food,” he said, when he heard about the dinner party. “I was not at the feast, Kristen. But I have tried her food.” Lautner may have missed out on her marinara sauce, but he did get to sample a more unusual dish Stewart whipped up. “Like, OK, you know kumquats? There’s apparently a fruit called loquats. Yeah, I didn’t know either. And she made a loquat pie.” What would you make for a “Twilight” dinner party? Tell us in the comments!
