‘Real Steel’: The Reviews Are In!

Hugh Jackman flick’s ‘well-staged’ fighting sequences and father-son spats leave critics ‘pleasantly surprised.’ By Josh Wigler Hugh Jackman and Evangeline Lilly in Real Steel Photo: DreamWorks Pictures Moviegoers have proven their affection for gigantic robots smashing the ever-loving sparkplugs out of each other in the heat of war — thanks for that, Michael Bay! — but machines beating each other into a tarry pulp purely for sport in the middle of a heartfelt family drama? That’s something the Autobots and Decepticons have yet to cover. But it seems that “Real Steel,” from “Night at the Museum” director Shawn Levy and “Wolverine” leading man Hugh Jackman, is more than meets the eye. Those who originally targeted Levy’s first foray into the action arena as nothing more than a big-screen Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots have seemingly been proven wrong, with critics praising “Real Steel” for its strong performances, moving story and, yes, the primal pleasure derived from watching two cybernetic gladiators tear each other to bits. Read on for a veritable scrap heap of “Real Steel” reviews: The Story “Taking place in a not-too-distant future that’s neither utopian nor dystopian, but kind of semi-topian, ‘Real Steel’ follows Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman), a former boxer who participates in the sport of robot fighting. (According to the ‘Steel’ timeline, human boxers will get out of the game soon because they can’t hit hard enough to make audiences happy — so enjoy those humans pounding on each other while you still can.) In a world where there’s no more human boxing, Charlie is a charmer/degenerate/bum lugging around a scrappy bot who fights at state fairs. He’s not at the level of ‘league fights’ — you know, the World Robot Boxing League, which is known, because it must be, as ‘the show.’ ” — Linda Holmes, NPR The Man and his Boy “As Charlie, Jackman is mostly surface gloss — he knows how to work a greasy tee and a bad attitude, glaring and growling at everyone. He softens slightly with [Evangeline] Lilly’s Bailey (so nice to see her bruised, buff beauty back since ‘Lost’ wrapped). But it is with [Dakota] Goyo that Jackman warms up. Their father-son spats, truly some of the film’s best sparring, is what gives it heart. Not ‘Rocky’ heart, or ‘Raging Bull’ heart, mind you, but ‘Real’ enough.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times The ‘Bot Bouts “The robot, despite its unyielding metallic expression and the glowing blue eyes, is surprisingly endearing, especially when he’s doing the pre-match two-step with Max. … As a ‘sparring’ robot meant only for practice fighting with other robots, he’s a long-shot contender in the ‘Rocky’ mold. But with ex-boxer Charlie’s moves — transmitted via voice command software — he’s suddenly got a shot at the title against the unbeaten Zeus. And, as in the original ‘Rocky’ mold … well, that would be too much of a spoiler. … Lovers of blood sport action (or perhaps crankcase oil in this case) are going to enjoy the well-staged fighting sequences, which are tension-filled and exciting and will have many writhing in their seats.” — Bruce DeMara, Toronto Star The Mechanic Message “As much as ‘Real Steel’ is an escapist pop confection, it forces you to consider the evolving relationship between humans and machines at a time when robots are replacing people in the workplace and in war. The movie doesn’t question our ever-deepening love affair with technology and foolish trust in it. As increasing numbers of people are kept mobile through spare parts, whether flesh, plastic or metal, we are ourselves becoming more droidlike every year. Behind it all is a collective fantasy of invulnerability, omnipotence and eternal life. ‘Real Steel’ at least acknowledges that machines require maintenance to be superhuman.” — Stephen Holden, New York Times The Verdict ” ‘Real Steel’ is a real movie. It has characters, it matters who they are, it makes sense of its action, it has a compelling plot. This is the sort of movie, I suspect, young viewers went to the ‘Transformers’ movies looking for. Readers have told me they loved and identified with their Transformers toys as children. [The robot] Atom must come close to representing their fantasies. Sometimes you go into a movie with low expectations and are pleasantly surprised.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times Check out everything we’ve got on “Real Steel.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Rebecca Black ‘Freaked Out’ When Lady Gaga Called Her A Genius

‘I never thought Lady Gaga would even know my name,’ the Internet sensation tells MTV News. By James Dinh Rebecca Black Photo: MTV News Lady Gaga has a habit of finding aspiring pop stars on the Internet. First there was Greyson Chance , then Maria Aragon . Now she’s giving props to everyone’s favorite top-of-the-weekend party teen, Rebecca Black, calling her a “genius.” With the clip for her song “Friday” nearing in on 50 million views on YouTube (surpassing Mother Monster’s “Born This Way” video views) and a late-night appearance on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” the Internet star is making waves. But how exactly did Black react to being recognized by one of the world’s biggest pop stars? “I freaked out,” a grinning Black told MTV News. “I’m 13 and I never thought Lady Gaga would even know my name. I’m the kind of girl that dances to Lady Gaga with a hairbrush in her room at night.” In addition to Gaga’s compliment, the overnight Internet sensation is still pondering whether her sudden fame isn’t just a dream. “I still question myself: ‘Is this real? When am I gonna wake up?’ ” Black said . As for how Black became affiliated with Ark Music Factory, the Los Angeles-based record company that assisted with the recording of “Friday” and its lo-fi clip, the teen says it was all a matter of research. “A friend had told me about it and so I looked it up online when I got home and made sure it was legit and all that,” she recalled. After sending an e-mail to the company, Black said she met with producers and was sent songs. When asked if a full-length album is in the works, Black revealed that she and her team are still trying to figure out what her next move should be. Do you think Rebecca Black is a genius? Keri Hilson’s Sexy New Video With Chris Brown Debuts

In the ‘One Night Stand’ clip, the two singers have a steamy encounter and trade dance moves in an industrial garage. By Jayson Rodriguez Keri Hilson Photo: Jason LaVeris/ WireImage Keri Hilson needed a fix in her “One Night Stand” video and Chris Brown was eager to be her mechanic. The blond-haired singers exchange steamy glances in the Collin Tilly-directed clip and, after finding each other, they join forces — Neo and Trinity style — for a dancing breakdown. The video begins with Hilson lying down and Brown on top of her as the F.A.M.E. star caressing her and they clasp hands. The camera then quickly cuts to images of Hilson straddling her younger co-star. As the song’s first verse starts, however, the pair are in separate scenes: Hilson, sporting a black fur coat, is standing in the middle of a dark and smoky street, while Brown, in overalls and a tank top, is underneath a car in an auto garage. “Tell me how you like it, baby/ Do you want it fast or slow?” Hilson sings. “I’ll give it to you all night,” Brown chimes in with an ad-lib. Midway through the clip, the two intertwine at an industrial warehouse in matching black outfits and sunglasses. “You should stay another night with me,” they both sing. “A one night stand is all I need.” A tag-team dance then ensues. After both singers pirouette and dip and dive, Brown towers over Hilson and swings his arms over her as she ducks. She then raises up and swings her arms over Brown, who leans back to avoid Hilson’s movements in slowed-down “bullet time” action. The “Pretty Girl Rock” star has always been an ardent Brown supporter . This past December, three months before the “Good Morning America” incident , Hilson told MTV News that the embattled singer had matured since his controversial altercation with Rihanna in 2009. “People are already putting [Brown] back in their good graces, ’cause they see his remorse,” Hilson said. “And I know people are saying, ‘Is he really a man? You have him on your album.’ I mean, yeah. To me, a man is someone, you don’t go backwards in life. You learn from your mistakes, and you don’t do it again. You show remorse, and you move on. You move forward onto bigger and better things. That’s a man trait.” What do you think of Hilson’s sexy new video with Brown? Share your opinions in the comments.

‘Mechanic’ Star Jason Statham Talks Allure Of Playing Tough Guys

‘If I do go into something else, it will be because it is good,’ the action hero tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Jason Statham Photo: MTV News Those familiar with the work of Jason Statham know that he doesn’t really do “fluffy” films or romantic comedies. He is a man of action and general butt-kicking/badass-ery: see “The Transporter,” “The Bank Job,” “Crank” and “The Expendables,” to name a few. Statham’s new film, “The Mechanic,” in which he plays a trained assassin who takes the son of his former mentor (Ben Foster) under his wing, is no different. There is a lot of action and a lot of ass-kicking, just the way his fans like it. When MTV News caught up with Statham, we asked him if he felt at all typecast, and whether he’d take on a nice-guy role in a romantic comedy someday. “You know, it’s tough, because people will always keep saying to me, ‘Do you only see yourself doing action movies?’ and, I don’t know,” Statham said. “It’s very difficult because one day I might be asked to do something that is of quality in a different genre, but the films that come from different genres aren’t that great,” he argued. “So I end up not doing them because once you make a mistake in that area, you can’t go back. So, if I do go into something else, it will be because it is good.” But Foster told us his co-star doesn’t just play a tough guy onscreen, but rather makes each performance unique by infusing them with “vulnerability.” “If you’re a tough guy, and Jason is, the hardest part is showing vulnerability,” Foster explained. “And it’s working in ‘The Bank Job’ and in ‘The Mechanic’ here, and other films. He brings a lot of quiet heart to it. And it’s difficult stuff because movie viewers aren’t looking for that necessarily,” he said. “But Jason is always being a humanity to [something] behind the bullets.” Are you fan of Jason Statham’s action roles?
