Adultification Bias: Study Shows Black Girls Are Treated More Harshly Than White Peers Of The Same Age

Source: Vladimir Vladimirov / Getty Study Shows Adults Perceive Black Girls As Less Innocent Than White Girls Of The Same Age Kudos to Jamilia J. Blake and Rebecca Epstein, who recently released their findings in a study on behalf of the Georgetown Law Center on Poverty and Inequality which looked at adultification bias toward young black girls and women. The introduction to the study revealed how Blake and Epstein previously conducted research which resulted in the June 2017 release of Girlhood Interrupted: The Erasure of Black Girls’ Childhood, a report that presented the findings from their quantitative analysis of an form of gendered racial bias against Black girls: adultification – a stereotype in which adults view Black girls as less innocent and more adult-like than their white peers, devoid of any individualized context. The results of that study revealed that adults perceive Black girls as less innocent than white girls as young as 5-9 years old. The set of findings published last week took things a step further. Researchers conducted focus groups with Black women and girls across the country, in towns and cities of various sizes and in different geographic regions, speaking with a range of participants, between the ages of 12 and 60 years old. Many of those who participated shared personal stories revealing harmful consequences of adults misperceiving their age. “Almost all the black girls and women we talked to said they’d experienced adultification bias as children,” report co-author Jamilia Blake said in a statement. “And they overwhelmingly agreed that it led teachers and other adults to treat them more harshly and hold them to higher standards than white girls.” NEW research @GtownLawPovCntr finds that black girls routinely experience “adultification bias”—the perception of Black girls as less innocent. The report features voices of Black women & girls, highlighting their lived experiences, insights & solutions. https://t.co/4t8oRbeLsc pic.twitter.com/fk6kJ3LsWh — Georgetown Law (@GeorgetownLaw) May 15, 2019 One such participant described being stopped by a police officer who did not believe her when she told him she was 15 years old, and handcuffed and fingerprinted her because he insisted that she was too old not to carry identification. “[T]he officer that came and … fingerprinted me — he was like: ‘Well, child, you know, don’t lie to us. And if you tell us the real — your real age and real name, we wouldn’t have to be going through none of this’ ….” (Age group 13-17) Other examples of adultification bias concerned “attitude”: “[E]ven when you see just in general the word ‘attitude’ being applied … it’s usually not applied to white girls. It’s applied to Black girls.” (Age group 20‑29) “[A] Black girl, if she’s right, and she wants to argue about something, she’s always labelled as, like, angry. And especially when it came to teachers and stuff. I would see people like debating with teachers and they would always automatically get into trouble. Because like she has ‘attitude.’ [But] … she’s just like trying to prove that she’s right. And … you can just tell that [to teachers,] automatically, she’s, like, in the wrong, just because.” (Age group 17‑23) “[T]he teacher would say she felt threatened, you know, by me expressing myself in a classroom; like, I was, like, overpowering her when a — a outspoken white person would be [viewed as], ‘Oh,nthey’re intelligent;’ you know?” (Age group 20‑29) How many of these scenarios seem familiar to you? The findings also include participants personal stories of being hypersexualized by adults: “In … sixth grade, … the school nurse, like, ask[ed] my aunt if I was sexually active …. And I was, like, at the time, like, what? Like, what? Nobody has sex. Like, I didn’t know anyone that had sex. And it was so crazy to me. And then just thinking, like, she would never think to ask my [white] friend that.” (Age group 20‑29) The bias the participants described included overreaction and premature criminalization as well. Just consider this story, shared by one of the young women who was interviewed: “I remember even in elementary school I had to transfer to different schools, and the other school didn’t want to take me because I had assault and battery on my record, and the reason I had assault and battery was because … during a, um, a game [at recess], one of the balls, like, hit the girl in the face. Like, I had — I wasn’t [even] taken to the principal’s office …. But they just threw that on my record ….” (Age group 20‑29) Can you imagine? An assault and battery record because of a GAME?!? Just ridiculous. There are so many more personal stories we could share, you can read the entire report HERE.

Is Taraji P. Henson Fooling Anybody As “Undercover Lyft” Driver? [VIDEO]

Taraji P. Henson took the wheel for the latest installment of “Undercover Lyft.” If you ask us, most of her L.A. based riders recognized the actress right away, but based on the ending it looks like a few were surprised. During her rides Henson dropped a few hints about her identity, making references to “Empire” and her upcoming film “What Men Want” which is due out Friday, February 8th. According to Page Six reports , Lyft is a supporter of Henson’s Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation. Named after the actress’ father, the foundation works to change the perception of and spread awareness about mental illness in African-Americans. Henson’s riders were treated to the Los Angeles premiere of “What Men Want” the day after the episode’s taping.

Martha Hunt Topless of the Day

Martha Hunt was one of Taylor Swift’s paid partners, or friends, because even a cunt popstar who disgusts me on all levels needs to give the perception to the world that she’s tolerable and likeable and someone who people want to be around for more than just the press that came with being friends with Taylor Swift…. Martha Hunt is not an Oscar Nominee, but based on the people they nominate, she may one day be a nominee, provided that she has enough social media presence…that’s the world we live in…hire whoever can best market the shit to their feed because no one cares…. She’s also one of the last American women who isn’t 300 pounds, pre diabetic or diabetic, working as a model who the people can relate to because they are all fat too…..thanks to the sedentary life, processed food, sugar in everything…we are all fucking disgusting… This is some Martha Hunt clickbait that isn’t actually clickbait, since Martha Hunt drives zero traffic to anything. But at least she tries. Just not hard enough. JOIN THE NEWSLETTER YOU ASSHOLES! The post Martha Hunt Topless of the Day appeared first on DrunkenStepFather.com .

Today (Jan. 9), we get an official trailer for Trigger Warning with Killer Mike  and it looks like a woke winner.  The six-episode series finds Killer Kill from Adamsville trying to introduce people to “new thoughts and concepts.” Considering this is Killer Mike, that seems to include asking Creflo Dollar to lead his new faith, getting Crips to sell their own branded soda and devotedly spending money only in the Black community—which makes paying an Asian stripper an issue. Via seemingly outrageous and often hilarious situations, Killer Mike aims to smack you in the head and flip your perception of America. We’re sold. Exclusive: DMX’s Lawyer Begs For Mercy Ahead Of $1.7 Million Tax Fraud Sentencing

DMX Rapper To Be Sentenced In Tax Evasion Case This Week DMX’s lawyer has begged for mercy from the judge as the rapper prepares to be sentenced in his $1.7 million tax fraud case, BOSSIP has learned. DMX’s lawyer Murray Richman wrote a letter to the court – which was obtained by BOSSIP – where he spelled out a ton of alternatives to prison time, like monitored restitution and even a stint in former NBA star Jayson Williams’ rehab center. Richman also cited X’s terrible childhood as the main reason why he couldn’t keep his nose clean, and said that the rapper didn’t really have a grasp on what taxes were. “We discussed his perception of taxes and he said ‘I grew up on welfare,” Richman’s letter says. “‘In my neighborhood on the first of the month, the mailman was robbed (because that’s when the checks came in). What do I know about taxes?’” The feds said DMX knowingly withheld paying taxes for years , and owes some $1.7 million to Uncle Sam. The rapper has been locked up since January after repeatedly failing sobriety tests, according to court papers. Federal prosecutors have asked the judge to make an example out of X and throw him in prison for five years. Instead of prison time, Richman suggested “trusteeship” as one possible choice as part of DMX’s sentencing, and said from now on, the government could garnish his future contracts into an escrow fund that would allow him to pay his back taxes, support his children and “to insure that he is paid by unscrupulous people as what has emerged as a definitive pattern of at best mismanagement and at worst larceny,” Richman wrote the judge. Caitlyn Jenner: The Kardashians Don’t Want Anything to Do With Me!

Not everything this year has gone as Caitlyn Jenner had hoped. True, she might be dating a hot blonde 21-year-old , but Cait has been thoroughly disappointed by Trump . And she’s also become estranged from various Kardashians — from her family. Caitlyn is publicly lamenting that the Kardashians want her out of their lives. Caitlyn Jenner spoke about her memoir, The Secrets of My Life , and its detrimental effect on her relationship with the Kardashians at the Cambridge Union on Monday night. And this sounds pretty rough. “It’s been a little bit tough over the past couple of years on the Kardashian side.” Yeah, we’d say so. Especially since April, when the memoir was published. “To be honest, I don’t talk to them anymore. Kim I haven’t talked to in a year.” That tracks, more or less. Back in September, we learned that Caitlyn and Kim hadn’t spoken in 9 months . (11 months is “a year,” for most intents and purposes) “They don’t want me in their lives, they bashed me pretty badly.” We saw quite a lot of that, with Caitlyn getting called insane  by her own family on Keeping Up With The Kardashians over some of the things that were written in her book. “It’s devastating when your kids do that. It really hurt.” Remember, folks — Caitlyn fathered Kendall and Kylie, but she’s been Kim and Kourtney and Khloe and Rob’s dad for decades, too. Caitlyn doesn’t feel that their responses are justified. “I tried to be honest in my book — very fair and very nice. Unfortunately, they didn’t take it that way.” Honesty is not always the best policy — particularly when writing a memoir about your very famous, still-living family members. But Caitlyn emphasizes that the Kardashians were not the focus. “In the book I express some opinions and got shut down. It was not about the Kardashians.” Sure, but obviously people are going to latch onto Kardashian news. “They were only mentioned on 20 pages.” Do you know how much any one of us could upset people in our lives by telling 100% truthful stories about them in just 20 pages? You could lose every friend and family member that you have with too much honesty. You gotta have a filter, folks. Yes, even when writing a memoir. You don’t need to lie; you just need to edit. But Caitlyn thinks that the Kardashians doing what they do — turning every circumstance into entertainment for their own professional and financial benefit — is to blame for the perception that Caitlyn’s book was negative towards them. “They made it more about them on television. The book was about my life. That caused a lot of the separation between us.” Like we said, they sure did talk about it on their show. But when you speak negatively of your celebrity family members outside of, like, a therapist’s office, don’t expect for them to be super chill about it. Caitlyn seems to be regarding her book, because it is a memoir, as some sort of sacrosanct confessional whose contents should be untouchable. But … it’s a book, and the Kardashians are (mostly) real people with (arguably) real feelings. It’s important for us to note that Caitlyn still gets along with some members of what’s considered the Kardashian clan. Caitlyn is still close with Kylie. Cait appeared on Life of Kylie . and the two regularly hang out on Father’s Day. Also, Caitlyn took her gal pal Sophia Hutchins to Kendall Jenner’s 22nd birthday party. That was potentially a little awkward, since Cait’s “friend” is still only 21 and therefore younger than Kendall, but it shows that Caitlyn and Kendall are still getting along. Still, it’s sad to see a family torn apart. We wonder if they’ll mend fences or just resign themselves to this estrangement.
