‘Resident Evil’ Enjoys Solid ‘Afterlife’ At The Box Office

Fourth entry in video game franchise takes top prize during quiet box-office weekend. By Josh Wigler Milla Jovovich in “Resident Evil: Afterlife” Photo: Sony Pictures The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Resident Evil: Afterlife” ($27.7 million) #2 “Takers” ($6.1 million) #3 “The American” ($5.9 million) #4 “Machete” ($4.2 million) #5 “Going the Distance” ($3.8 million) If there’s one thing that zombies enjoy more than brains, it’s money. And the flesh-eating monsters of “Resident Evil: Afterlife” got a whole lot of both as the only new wide release to hit theaters this past weekend. Director Paul W.S. Anderson and actress Milla Jovovich’s fourth entry in the popular video game franchise proved that the series still has plenty of life in it with a first-place finish worth $27.7 million. “Afterlife” played on an estimated 4,700 screens at 3,203 locations, with just over 2,000 of those venues showing off the movie’s well-received 3-D capabilities and 141 in IMAX 3-D. Not only did “Afterlife” top the domestic box office, but it also managed to dethrone “Inception” overseas with $46.2 million earned from foreign markets. The success of “Afterlife” all but guarantees that the “Resident Evil” franchise will soldier on. Indeed, Jovovich informed New York magazine that a fifth film will “definitely” be made, with plans to solicit story ideas from fans. “We’ve been talking to a lot of fans on Twitter and stuff, so it’s probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to see,” she said. “It’s going to be a more interactive process.” Beyond “Afterlife,” it was a fairly bleak weekend at the box office. “Takers” continued to perform well in its third weekend, while both “The American” and “Machete” suffered significant drops of more than 50 percent in their second weekend frames. “Going the Distance” rounded out the top five with $3.8 million. Upcoming Releases Next weekend, Ben Affleck invites moviegoers to visit “The Town,” while M. Night Shyamalan puts the fear of the “Devil” inside of an elevator. Animated comedy “Alpha and Omega” and the Emma Stone-starring romantic comedy “Easy A” round out the weekend’s newcomers. ‘The Last Exorcism’ Leads The Way At The Box Office

‘Takers,’ starring T.I. and Hayden Christensen, lands at #2 for the weekend. By Adam Rosenberg Ashley Bell in “The Last Exorcism” Photo: Lionsgate It was a close weekend race at the box office, but in the end the powers of evil overtook the powers of, well, less evil. The Eli Roth-produced, Daniel Stamm-directed horror mockumentary “The Last Exorcism” took the #1 position this weekend with $21.3 million in ticket sales spread out over 2,874 screens. Trailing only slightly behind in the #2 position was the heist flick “Takers,” with a take of $21 million from 2,206 screens. Even though it emerged on top, “Exorcism” is a bigger winner than it seems to be. While no budget has been reported, the single camera format, absence of big stars and minimal special effects couldn’t have driven the film’s cost very high. Even factoring in marketing — which has been largely focused online with viral campaigns like — a $20+ million box office take is a considerable win. “Takers,” by comparison, boasts a star-studded ensemble that draws from both Hollywood and the music biz. Chris Brown and T.I. star alongside Hayden Christensen, Idris Elba, Matt Dillon and Zoe Saldana in a crime drama about a high-level, high-stakes bank robbery. The film’s budget is reported to hover around $20 million. It’s a sharp dip after that for positions three through five, which are filled by movies that came out earlier in August. The action throwback “The Expendables” came in at #3 with $9.5 million, slightly more than half of what it earned last week. Still, with a total gross of roughly $82 million — more than double its reported budget — in just 17 days, the Sylvester Stallone-directed/written/starring flick is no small success. Spots four and five went to a pair of Sony releases, “Eat Pray Love” and “The Other Guys,” which brought in $7 million and $6.6 million, respectively. The surprise for the weekend was the theatrical re-release of “Avatar.” Opening on roughly 800 screens with the benefit of 3-D and an added nine minutes of footage, the movie only managed to pull in $4 million, good enough for a #12 spot on the weekend list. ‘Last Exorcism’ Tops Friday Box Office

‘Takers’ with T.I. and Chris Brown nabs second place. By Mawuse Ziegbe Ashley Bell in “The Last Exorcism” Photo: Lionsgate The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Last Exorcism” ($9.4 million) #2 “Takers” ($7.5 million) #3 “The Expendables” ($2.7 million) #4 “Eat Pray Love” ($ 2.2 million) #5 “The Other Guys” ($1.9 million) “The Last Exorcism” scared up major ticket sales on its opening day. The supernatural horror flick raked in an estimated $9.4 million on Friday. “Exorcism,” which is directed by Daniel Stamm and boasts gore-master Eli Roth of the “Hostel” series fame as a producer, drew enough moviegoers to grab the top spot. The film, which follows a documentary crew in rural Louisiana hired to capture the creepy antics of a supposedly possessed young girl, goes light on digital wizardry in favor of scoring scares with practical effects. In the second place slot is the star-studded heist flick “Takers.” T.I., Chris Brown, Idris Elba, Hayden Christensen and Matt Dillon work the screen in a story about a crew of suave thieves set to carry out a major job. The thriller snatched $7.5 million in Friday ticket sales. Sliding to third place is the heavily-armed action fest “The Expendables.” The fiery, butt-kicking flick raised $2.7 million on Friday, after ruling the box office for the past two weeks and sitting comfortably at the top spot. Friday’s haul edges the total domestic tally of the Sylvester Stallone-helmed enterprise near the $75 million mark. “Eat Pray Love,” featuring marquee vet Julia Roberts, settled into fourth place. The soul-searching movie adapted from the runaway hit memoir of the same name, nabbed $2.2 million in box office receipts on Friday. The loopy cop comedy “The Other Guys” continues to power along, taking in $1.9 million and rounding out Friday’s top movies in the fifth-place slot. Although “Avatar” wears the crown for the highest-grossing film ever, the re-release of the James Cameron adventure, revamped with previously unreleased footage, failed to crack the top ten with only $1.2 million in Friday ticket sales. Fantasia’s ‘Behind The Music’ Addresses Career Highs, Life Lows

‘American Idol’ alum opens up about suicide attempt, teenage rebelliousness. By Kara Warner Fantasia on “Behind The Music” Photo: VH1 When Fantasia Barrino told America that she had “been through some stuff” upon winning the “American Idol” crown in 2004, she was putting it mildly. That didn’t even include her most recent struggles with a drug overdose and being accused of breaking up a marriage . On VH1’s latest episode of “Behind the Music,” which premiered Tuesday night (August 24), viewers learned that, although the spunky “Idol” winner has suffered several lows recently, she is on her way to a full recovery and proud of herself for being who she is. The episode opened with a detailed account of Barrino’s shocking overdose, in which she said she made attempted to end her life because she “didn’t have any fight” in her . “At that moment I didn’t care about anything. I just wanted out,” she said, boldly admitting that the overdose wasn’t at all an accident and that she was not happy when she woke up in the hospital and realized her suicide attempt “didn’t work” — until her nurse, Melody, told her to get up and fulfill her destiny. From there, the episode delves deep into Fantasia’s North Carolina roots — beginning with when she began singing (at age 5), then tracing her first love (ex-boyfriend Brandel Shouse, the father of her daughter, Zion), which would later turn into an abusive relationship. “He was somebody I was crazy about,” Barrino said. “The first guy who showed me attention.” Barrino recounted how in high school she started to crave attention in other ways, by wearing tight clothing, acting like she was already an adult, until her world was turned upside down after she was raped at her high school at age 14. “I didn’t even cry my way home,” she said of her feelings after the assault. “I was numb, very numb, confused, I just felt nasty. Disgusting.” Although she didn’t press charges, Barrino said she was unable to continue going to school because of the taunts and harassment from her classmates, so she dropped out and then “turned into a rebel,” until her hard-partying and careless ways landed her pregnant at 17. Unable to support herself and her daughter, Barrino began singing professionally, taking any gigs that paid, until she saw an episode of “American Idol” and fought her way into an audition. The rest of Barrino’s story is familiar to “Idol” fans: She was crowned the winner of season three, which she called “the best day of my life,” signed to a record contract with Clive Davis and was the first new artist to have a single debut at #1. Barrino’s post-“Idol” career path wasn’t smooth sailing, however. The young singer once again found herself nearly bankrupt after dealing with corrupt managers and legal woes, but she received new hope after being cast in “A Color Purple” on Broadway . From there, the episode delved into the star’s recent lows — a scare with throat tumors, which she had surgically removed — and her relationship with Antwaun Cook and the lawsuit from his ex-wife, Paula, which led to her suicide attempt last week. “I realize how people end up in the grave because of that one moment,” she said of that dark day. “Feeling like they can’t go on [because] it’s too heavy, that’s somewhere I never want to go again.” Fortunately, the episode ended on a high note, with Barrino proudly receiving her GED and walking in a graduation ceremony with the 2010 class of her former high school, St. Andrews. “I know that I am beautiful and special,” Barrino said. “I am who I am — and that’s what makes me Fantasia.” What did you think about Fantasia’s story on “Behind the Music”? ‘Takers’ Stars Discuss Importance Of Film’s Fashion

Chris Brown says co-star Hayden Christensen ‘had swag’ in the film. By Shaheem Reid Chris Brown Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images When talking to the cast of the upcoming film “Takers” (arriving in theaters Friday), it was clear that each actor had to not only be sharp with his lines, but with his clothing as well. The film stars Idris Elba, T.I., Chris Brown, Paul Walker, Michael Ealy and Hayden Christensen as a crew of bank robbers out to steal approximately $30 million from an armored car. And when they’re not busy plotting their heist, the crew enjoy the finer things in life, from women to wardrobe. “For my end, my fashion in particular, I had as much input as one could have,” Tip said. “There were some things that were suggested that weren’t me. There were other things that faced adverse opinion at first, but after dialogue and compromise, I saw that it came out and worked best for the character’s presentation for the screen.” “How a man dresses is how you start to create this character,” Idris Elba, who plays the team’s leader, Gordon, affirmed. “I had a big influence on how Gordon looked. My team was in suits, that was a big component.” So with everyone on-set dressed to the nines, who had the flyest outfits? Chris Brown said it was a toss-up. “Hayden dressed dope,” the singer, sitting next to Michael Ealy, who plays his brother in the film, complimented. “You know, the hat, the suspenders. He had swag. That’s kind of my feel [in real life]. “And Idris, he had that white coat on,” Brown continued, referring to a scene where the gang gathers at their hangout spot, a jazz club owned by Ealy’s character. “He had that tuxedo on. Like, ‘Yeah, I’m the leader.’ ” “I saw Idris got to wear the white coat. I was digging the white coat,” Tip agreed. “I saw Hayden got to wear the hat. So everybody had a different element of fashion they brought to the table.” Ealy says it was no contest. “I felt I’m the best dressed through the entire piece,” he joked. “I’ll take best dressed.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Takers.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
