Timothy Cunningham Still Missing: Reward Grows In CDC Employee’s Disappearance

A reward for information on Timothy Cunningham , the missing public health service commander at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, had grown to more than $24,000 on GoFundMe on Tuesday. Cunningham, 35, has disappeared after leaving work early and was last seen or heard from February 12. The disappearance has been especially difficult for Cunningham’s parents and his sister, Tiara Cunningham.  The family is “remaining positive and prayerful” through their rough time. “I have been trying my best to go through daily activities such as work without getting distracted,” Tiara Cunningham told ABC News in a text message on Tuesday. “But no one can really prepare you for seeing your face or your brother’s face on the news while at work.” “I feel like I’m in a horrible ‘Black Mirror’ episode,” the sister of a missing CDC employee said https://t.co/FI18Ur5tOA — NYT National News (@NYTNational) February 26, 2018 The family waits for Cunningham’s safe return, they are trying to continue to stick together. “So it’s a new normal that isn’t normal and many people won’t understand,” Tiara Cunningham added. The reward of more than $24,000 via GoFundMe has grown tremendously since the page was launched 15 days ago. Private donations, as well as donations from the family, contributed to the reward increase, Atlanta Police spokeswoman Lisa Bender told ABC News. The support for the Cunningham family has been strong since the public first learned of the Morehouse grad’s disappearance more than three weeks ago. “I was overwhelmed by the support both locally and nationally,” Cunningham’s sister also said. “The support of the public is indicative of how impactful Tim’s reach is,” she added. “He regularly participated in service events around the city. He served citizens in New York City during Hurricane Sandy and was ready to deploy to service in his capacity.” Before his vanishing, Cunningham was upset after being denied a promotion, police said. No foul play is suspected in the case. Here’s What Young Black People Are Doing To Fight Back Against HIV And AIDS

Y oung Black people are much more “concerned” about the global HIV and AIDS epidemic in comparison to all other demographic in America, according to a new study. And it’s for good reason, too, as African-Americans are affected the most by the sexually transmitted virus despite having a disproportionate representation among the overall population. Nearly half of Black Americans from 18 to 30 years old were especially worried about HIV and AIDS when it comes to people they know. That figure of 46 percent was more than three times the number for White people, a survey conducted by the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation found. The survey was published Thursday ., one day before the annual observation of World AIDS Day. Exacerbating those findings are the fact that Black Americans “account for a higher proportion of new HIV diagnoses, those living with HIV, and those ever diagnosed with AIDS, compared to other races/ethnicities,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As such, about 34 percent of Black people were rightfully concerned about contracting the disease, compared to just 16 percent of White people. There appeared to be a silver lining when it comes to awareness, though: Young Black folks are also the ones most likely to get an HIV test, a key fact considering the virus is older than they are. “An entire generation has been born and grown up without ever knowing a time when HIV did not exist, and they may be the first to see it end,” Tina Hoff, Senior Vice President, Health Communications and Media Partnerships, Kaiser Family Foundation, said in a press release. “Whether this future is realized rests with those most affected being educated about – and having access to – the latest advances in prevention and treatment.” In the U.S., Black people accounted for 40 percent of Americans living with HIV in 2013, the year with the most recent statistics available, according to the CDC. Black people in general around the world have also been lopsidedly diagnosed with HIV and AIDS, with Africa being ground zero with a reported whopping 69 percent of the world’s 34 million HIV diagnoses. More than 90 percent of HIV positive children around the world are in Africa, as well. While there has yet to be a cure, vaccine trials are ongoing, including one that recently launched in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the National Institutes of Health. SEE ALSO: Who Is Next? Hold The Sugar! New Stats Show Diabetes Cases Skyrocket To Historic Levels In The United States

One in four people don’t even know they have it… Diabetes Cases Rise To Never-Before-Seen Levels In United States America’s level of diabetic cases has risen to alarming levels, and the main culprit to blame remains obesity . Via LATimes : Driven by surging obesity, an aging population and doubly high risks among blacks and Latinos, the American epidemic of diabetes has leaped to historic heights in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday. Diabetes mellitus now afflicts 29 million Americans — 9.3% of the nation’s population. And 1 in 4 don’t know they have the disease, which is thought to increase the risk of heart attack or stroke as much as fourfold. Releasing a welter of new statistics on the disease, the agency said an additional 86 million American adults — nearly 1 in 3 — has prediabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are abnormally elevated but below the criteria for diagnosing diabetes. Between 15% and 30% of those with prediabetes will go on to develop the full-fledged metabolic disorder within five years, a transition that can sometimes be averted with substantial weight loss and increased physical activity. The new statistics are based on national health data gathered in 2012 and represent a nearly 12% increase in the number of those with diabetes since the last statistical report was issued in 2010. In 2012 alone, 1.7 million Americans 20 years and older were newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. African Americans, Latinos and those of American Indian/Alaska Native descent are roughly twice as likely to have diagnosed diabetes as non-Latino white adults, the CDC said. People we have all got to do better! This is a serious epidemic. Cut down on the sugar before they have to cut off your leg!

Gender Matters: HIV Positive Black Men Likely To Receive Lower Levels Of Care Than HIV Positive Black Women

HIV Positive Black Women Receive More Care Than Men HIV/AIDS is a MAJOR issue in the black community …. According to News One: HIV is a crisis in African-American communities that continues to threaten the health and well-being of Black men and women across the United States. Further, the community faces the most severe burden of HIV and AIDS than any racial/ethnic group in the nation. As a grim reminder of these unvarnished facts, Feb. 7 marks the observance of the 14th annual National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day designed to remind Americans that HIV remains a critical public health concern in African-American communities more than thirty years after the first AIDS cases were identified. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new data released Thursday showing that additional efforts are needed to ensure that individuals who are infected with HIV receive the care and treatment they need. “The day provides an important opportunity to talk about testing in our community,” Dr. Donna Hubbard McCree, associate director for health equity at the division of HIV/AIDS Prevention at the CDC told NewsOne. “And also it’s a community mobilization initiative. It’s really about getting the message out. ‘I am my brother or sister’s keeper’ was the original theme, but the real specific focal points are around getting educated, tested and getting treatment. It’s a way to keep the conversation about HIV and the affect that it’s having in African-American communities on the table.” These are the facts: African Americans now bear the greatest burden of HIV in the United States, accounting for nearly half of the more than 1.1 million Americans living with HIV and nearly half of those who have died with AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic, the CDC says. Among African Americans, just as in other racial and ethnic groups, gay and bisexual men, especially young men, are the most impacted population, accounting for the majority of new infections. African-American women also bear a large, disproportionate burden, with almost two-thirds of new infections in 2010 among women occurring among Black women. The harsh numbers signal that improvements need to be made not only in diagnosing individuals with HIV, but also ensuring they are engaged in care and treated effectively to keep their virus under control. Published in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the new data examines the percentage of African Americans diagnosed with HIV infection who were receiving care and treatment in 2010. Among Blacks who had been diagnosed with HIV, 75 percent were linked to care, 48 percent stayed in care, 46 percent were prescribed antiretroviral therapy, and 35 percent achieved viral suppression (i.e., the virus is under control at a level that helps keep people healthy and reduces the risk of transmitting the virus to others), the report shows. Black males had lower levels of care and viral suppression than Black females, and those who were younger (under the age of 25) had lower levels than those who were older. “Our data tells us that treatment can help people with HIV live longer, healthier lives and helps prevent the transmission of the virus to others,” McCree said. “We’re excited about these data because it gives us a snapshot around what’s going on around treatment and care within African-American communities. And given the disproportionate rates of HIV within African-American communities, it’s critical that we make individuals aware of their status so they can get their virus under control.” Discuss…

Jesus Take The Wheel: Mother Says 19-Year-Old Son Was Killed By Flu Shot After Falling Into A Coma 24 Hours After Taking Vaccine

This is sad. Man Dies After Taking Flu Shot He thought he was helping himself by getting the flu shot and it ended up killing him. Dayum. According to KSL: A Utah woman said a flu shot caused her son’s death. Lori Webb put her assertion in her son’s obituary and is warning other families about what she believes are potential hidden dangers of vaccinations. “I could not believe it,” Webb said. “I never in my life would ever think ‘Your son is in a coma?’ How does it happen?” Lori Webb said her son, Chandler Blake Webb, 19, was the perfect picture of health and was preparing to submit his papers for a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, the day after a physical, tuberculosis test and flu shot, Chandler turned very ill. Within a few days, he was in the hospital for the second time. Within 24-hours of his second check-in, Webb said her son was in a coma. He had previously suffered from numerous severe symptoms, including shaking and vomiting. “This was his first flu shot,” Webb said. “He’d never had one before.” Chandler Webb’s family ultimately elected to take him off life support, and he died after 28 days in the hospital. “I hate this,” Lori Webb said Friday afternoon before her son’s viewing, tears streaming down her cheeks. “I hate that I have to bury my son.” Utah Department of Health officials did not go into specifics about the case. Instead, a spokesperson said the department was aware of the case. Another spokesperson late Friday offered another statement: “Our epidemiology staff have [sic] commented that although they have no evidence of a flu vaccine (or any other kind of vaccine) causing this type of reaction/outcome, they take these reports very seriously and they are thoroughly investigated by the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention].” Webb admitted to reporters that not even all the neurologists on her son’s team agree to blame the flu shot, but she also said every test for a disease came up negative. “They cannot prove any other thing,” Webb said. “My gut tells me that too.” Does this story make you rethink getting a flu shot?

What Does the Fox Say: Ylvis Music Video Goes Viral, Defies Human Comprehension

Watch out, Gangnam Style. Norwegian duo Ylvis has released a music video, entitled “The Fox,” that may be the biggest viral hit of the fall – if not all of 2013. Bard Ylvisaker and Vegard Ylvisaker, collectively Ylvis, begin with a simple theme familiar to anyone with kids of pre-school age: What does this animal say? Somehow, from that came the bizarre, hilarious, amazingly catchy video below: Ylvis – The Fox (Official Music Video) A Lonely Island-esque duo, Ylvis had many wondering if this was “real.” The production value of their effort, on par with the also-critter-themed Katy Perry “Roar” music video , certainly boosts the viral potential of the song. Visually, it’s a sight to behold … for better or worse. But it’s the pulsating, hypnotic, electro-pop beat that really drives “The Fox,” punctuated by the echoing, forever epic refrain, “What Does the Fox Say?!” Eat your heart out, PSY. #YLVIS4LYFE.
