Nelly Furtado Says ‘Big Hoops’ Inspired By Odd Future’s ‘Rawness’

‘I was inspired by how dark it sounded and how heavy and visceral,’ Furtado tells MTV News about rap collective. By Jocelyn Vena Nelly Furtado Photo: MTV News Nelly Furtado proclaims her allegiance to a major fashion accessory — hoop earrings — on her feel-good track “Big Hoops (Bigger the Better).” While she was influenced by her mall-rat youth when she sat down to make the track with producer Rodney Jerkins, it was also the antic-loving rap outfit Odd Future who sonically creeped inside her and totally shaped the record’s sound. ” ‘Big Hoops’ is a special tune for me for a few different reasons,” Furtado told MTV News when she stopped by our office Tuesday to discuss the thumping anthem about loving your jewelry and, more importantly, yourself. “The state of mind I was in, I was actually listening to a lot of different music a few weeks before,” she continued. “I think I was listening to Odd Future or something, and I was inspired by how dark it sounded and how heavy and visceral and how it made your blood feel things. And I just thought, ‘Wow — that’s really missing in music. We’re missing that rawness, that energy and that power.’ ” When Furtado decided to embrace her own power, she crafted a tune that expresses who she is when she is onstage — full of bravado and holding her “sword,” her microphone. “Hoops” also pays homage to the girl she was as a teen growing up in Canada, hoping to become pop star she is today. “I think music can tap into a lot of powerful emotions, and I think in the studio on ‘Big Hoops’ I tapped into a really powerful memory of being 14 years old, completely in love with hip-hop and R&B along with all my friends, and putting on my sister’s big hoop earrings and heading down to the mall to hang out with my backpack and jeans,” Furtado recalled. She also shared that, in addition to working on her looks back then, she was also “writing rhymes and hanging out and freestyling on the corner and feeling famous already, even though I clearly wasn’t at 14.” Despite not yet having fame and fortune, she explained, there was an emotion she felt then that she still feels now: “But I felt [famous], and I think when you’re that age, you have your inner gumption already,” she said. “So ‘Big Hoops’ taps into that power.” “Hoops” is the lead single off her upcoming album, The Spirit Indestructible , out in September. It’s her first English-language album since the chart-topping Loose , which she released in 2006. She dropped a Spanish-language album, Mi Plan , in 2009.

Adam Sandler Is No ‘Centerfold’ In ‘Jack And Jill’ Drag

Director Dennis Dugan dishes on Sandler playing both title roles and the comic ‘gusto’ of Al Pacino in our Fall Movie Preview. By Kara Warner Adam Sandler in “Jack and Jill” Photo: Columbia Pictures Adam Sandler and director Dennis Dugan have a long history together that includes teaming up on money-making screwball comedies like “Happy Gilmore,” “Big Daddy” and “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan.” Their big-screen antics continue this fall with the November release of “Jack and Jill,” a family comedy that has Sandler playing the role of Jack — and that of his sister Jill — alongside Katie Holmes and Al Pacino, who plays himself. If that sounds like a recipe for ridiculousness, check out what Dugan had to say recently about the hilarity that ensued during production, including what Sandler is like in drag and just how funny Pacino really is. MTV : How is Adam as a woman? Dennis Dugan : Wonderful. He plays this absolutely [straight]; [Jill is] essentially his identical twin sister, so not a centerfold, if I can be diplomatic. MTV : Does she think she’s a centerfold? Dugan : She’s this Bronx spinster, all that that entails in a single, 40-ish woman from the Bronx. She’s a really powerful personality that could be translated as a pain in the ass, depending on who you are, but has a really, really, really nice heart. She just doesn’t understand how annoying she is. MTV : What kind of Adam Sandler movie is this? How does it compare to your other offerings? Dugan : It’s very funny. It’s got a lot of heart. It’s PG and it’s a Thanksgiving/Christmas type of movie and, so far, in tests it appeals all the way across the board. And so if you were saying it was different from a normal Adam Sandler movie, it has a wide appeal to both — to women and boys too. So it plays out pretty equally among all the quadrants, where usually [our movies] are a tiny bit more focused on younger males. MTV : How was working with Al Pacino? Dugan : It was just absolutely wonderful when he said yes. We were delighted and then we were scared. He’s an artist, he wants to be as great as he can possibly be and he doesn’t care what project it is. I saw him on Broadway in “Merchant of Venice” and he has the exact commitment to playing the part of Al Pacino in the movie as he did Shylock. MTV : Would you say that Pacino or Katie Holmes is the more pleasant surprise in the film? Dugan : I wouldn’t say one or the other was more pleasant but it was just delightful. [Katie] is just the nicest human being and the most flexible in terms of working. She had a lot to do with most characters; Pacino had a little less to do in terms of split screens and all of the effects and green screens and all of that stuff. But Katie just has that smile on her face and it’s genuine. And then Al, like I said, we were kind of scared because we didn’t know what his process was but he just dives in, completely commits to everything. Every crazy thing we threw at him, he did, and did it with gusto, and that was nice because he’s delightful and happy and brave and I couldn’t have had a better time. Lady Gaga’s ‘Judas’ Video Is ‘Groundbreaking,’ Laurieann Gibson Says

‘It’s a phenomenal video: really powerful, really impactful,’ creative director tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa WhiteWolf Lady Gaga Photo: Tom Briglia/ WireImage Lady Gaga is ready to tell her version of the Bible in her “Judas” video , which recently wrapped production in L.A. MTV News caught up with the video’s co-director and Gaga’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, to talk about the clip as well as her new E! show “The Dance Scene,” debuting Sunday. “I will tell you now, first off, I’m Christian, and my career is evidence of God in my life, and I think that most people are already thinking that Gaga and the blasphemy and they’re premeditating the approach and I think they’ll be very shocked to find out how huge and really groundbreaking the message is and how freeing the message is for all the right reasons,” she said. “And it’s really going to shock the world.” The cast includes some big-name cameos as well, including Norman Reedus as Judas. “He was so prolific,” she declared of his performance, adding that the video is “badass” and that Gaga will play Mary Magdalene. The two ladies took it upon themselves to make sure the video’s direction was perfect — so they just decided to direct it themselves. “There was elements of ‘Born This Way’ during our collaboration [with director Nick Knight] and, as much as I loved it, there were moments where, for me, it didn’t really evolve as I had inspired of the actual creative, which was defined. “But when we got to ‘Judas,’ it was very clear to me and the inspiration was very clear to her. We approached a director, but then the dates actually got messed up and it was conflicted and her manager and her looked at me [and asked me to direct it with her].” Gibson said she took a moment before agreeing, as she had just wrapped up work on Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball HBO special , premiering in May, but she “couldn’t resist. It’s a phenomenal video: really powerful, really impactful. She’s such a strong, committed artist. Her loyalty to me is something I will be forever grateful for. We’re spiritually connected. We need each other, and ‘Judas’ is ultimately a representation of our true bond.” What are you expecting from the “Judas” video? Let us know in the comments! Olivia Newton-John Will ‘Really Surprise’ ‘Glee’ Fans With ‘Physical’

‘It’s not your mama’s Olivia Newton-John,’ musical producer Adam Anders says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Olivia Newton John Photo: Gustavo Caballero/ Getty Images Olivia Newton-John is coming to Sue Sylvester’s (Jane Lynch) rescue on Tuesday’s (May 4) episode of “Glee.” The episode will see the Australian pop singer/actress and the cheerleading coach remake the famous “Physical” video, after a video of Sue jazzercising is leaked. “I totally geeked out when she started singing ‘Physical,’ ” “Glee” musical producer Adam Anders told MTV News about the duet between Newton-John and Lynch. “I was like, ‘What’s happening?’ She sounds exactly the same! But this is a whole new version of it. You’ll be really surprised to hear it. It’s not your mama’s Olivia Newton-John.” Anders also promised that viewers will find the “Grease” star’s appearance in the episode organic. “You can say what you want about it, but this show is real,” he said. “At the heart of it, it’s about real issues, real stories. When the music brings those stories out, it’s really powerful.” Though Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel have already graced the show this season, and Neil Patrick Harris has a guest appearance coming up, Anders maintains that the show’s real star is the music. “The best part of ‘Glee’ is introducing new music to an older generation and old music to a newer generation. There’s so much great music. We all listen to music in a vacuum, then we’re exposed to things and love it. Olivia Newton-John is an example of that. “It’s a perfect marriage between the songs that were chosen and the storyline. When that happens, it moves people,” he continued. “Music, at the end of the day, is all about emotion. When you get that reaction, people are gonna buy it.” Are you excited to see Jane Lynch and Olivia Newton-John get “Physical”? Tell us in the comments!
