It was a weekend for the gods as Thor had a divine debut at number one, kicking off the summer of super heroes to a solid start. The vroom-vroom-smash of Fast Five took a steep plunge to number two while Jumping the Broom had a surprisingly strong showing at number three. Which meant that the widely-reviled Something Borrowed (more like Something Blew , amirite, dudes??) could only manage fourth place. Your weekend receipts are here.

Friday Box Office: Rio Still Soaring At Number One, Madea Looking A Little Tired

The high-flying birds of Rio stayed aloft in first place again, winning the Friday night box office crow, while Madea’s Family managed a rather soft second place opening night. Fernando Meirelles Will Give Aristotle Onassis The Godfather Treatment

No one in Hollywood has come close to recreating the epic tapestry of power, politics and family (not to mention machine gun murders) onscreen that Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola established with The Godfather . That doesn’t mean they aren’t trying. Just today, director Fernando Meirelles ( The Constant Gardener ) and screenwriter Bráulio Mantovani ( City of God ) announced that they are developing a similarly ambitious project which will center on Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, his sketchy business dealings and his sketchier involvement with the Kennedy family.

Weekend Receipts: Rio Flips Ghostface The Bird From First Place

For the third week in a row, chatty cartoon animals ruled the box office as the birds of Rio took the top spot with a blockbuster $40 million opening. Coming in a distant second place was the 90s nostalgia curio, Scream 4 , which netted a horrifying $19 million; you’ll recall that Scream 3 had a $34 million opening weekend and that was back when ticket prices were lower and this all used to be orange groves. And speaking of wayback when, Robert Redford’s The Conspirator opened in ninth place; sorry James McAvoy! I still love you, boo!. Your weekend receipts are here.

A tremendous week of news deserves no less a finale than this: The Weinstein Company is going into the video-game business . “The TWC Games label will utilize The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films’ strong and recognizable properties, and work with external partners to develop and publish video games for mobile, social, and console platforms,” announced a press release, punctuated by Bob Weinstein’s observation: “With all of the digital platforms, there are so many opportunities to broaden our audience with compelling, high quality, cost-efficient, video game entertainment.” No kidding! But what should come first?
