First U.S. Kubrick Retrospective Coming To LACMA

Mark your calendars, movie nerds: November’s “An Academy Salute to Stanley Kubrick” event, hosted by Malcolm McDowell, will kick off a film retrospective accompanying LACMA’s exhibition dedicated to the films and work of Stanley Kubrick : “Kubrick’s films will be represented through a thoughtful selection of archival material, annotated scripts, photography, costumes, cameras and equipment, set models, original promotional materials, and props. The interdisciplinary exhibition draws attention to Kubrick’s fixation with historical research and his visionary adaptations of influences from the fine arts, design, and architecture, and enables visitors to experience the cinematic journey of one of the great artists of the twentieth century.” [ Deadline ]

Weekend Receipts: Rio Flips Ghostface The Bird From First Place

For the third week in a row, chatty cartoon animals ruled the box office as the birds of Rio took the top spot with a blockbuster $40 million opening. Coming in a distant second place was the 90s nostalgia curio, Scream 4 , which netted a horrifying $19 million; you’ll recall that Scream 3 had a $34 million opening weekend and that was back when ticket prices were lower and this all used to be orange groves. And speaking of wayback when, Robert Redford’s The Conspirator opened in ninth place; sorry James McAvoy! I still love you, boo!. Your weekend receipts are here.

The Writer of Elektra And Inspector Gadget Calls Spider-Man ‘Cheesy’

Speaking to Coming Soon, Zak Penn, the man who gave us Last Action Hero , Elektra and the third X-Men movie, claims that, for all his comic book movie credits, the only hero he didn’t want was Spider-Man. “Actually Spider-Man was one of the only ones I didn’t want to do because I thought it was a little too cheesy.” Again, that’s the visionary who wrote the virtually unwatchable Elektra , which features a resurrected assassin who has OCD, crapping on two of the best superhero movies ever made (we’ll ignore the studio-driven mess of the third). Glass house? Blackened pot? Willfully obtuse? I can’t figure out which one best suits him. [ Coming Soon ]

An Inside Look at LA’s Community of Visionary Activists

Photo credit: Astig!! / Creative Commons It’s interesting to me that many people judge Los Angeles without really knowing her. She really is the City of Angels. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for going on a dozen years now, and at long last I can affirmatively state that I have found “my tribe.” I’m referring to a group of like-minded people, who I am honored to call my friends and colleagues. These angels possess the qualities that I most admire in people: Social and environmental consciousness, spiritual, activists, c… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Van Jones’ vision – Will it survive?

Environmental advocate and Special Advisor for Green Jobs to the White House Van Jones resigned from office following controversies over a petition he had signed and his comments about Republicans. He was a vocal proponent American Clean Energy And Security Act H.R. 2454, otherwise known as “cap and trade”, which passed in the House in June.
