Unarmed Black Man Killed By California Police Was A Morehouse Man

Q uestions were going unanswered in the case of a Nigerian-American man who was killed by sheriff’s deputies in San Mateo County, California, earlier this month. The family of Chinedu Valentine Okobi  criticized the cops for using excessive force in the Oct. 3 arrest of the man who they said suffered from mental illness. Okobi was walking in and out of traffic before two deputies tasered him multiple times to subdue and place him in handcuffs, authorities said. The violent arrest sent him into what tuned out to be a fatal cardiac arrest. All five officers involved in the incident were placed on paid leave. “All I know is a young man’s dead and he was in custody of the police. He was unarmed, not engaged in any serious crime,” stated John Burris , a civil rights attorney who’s representing Okobi’s family. Burris demanded transparency, calling on the district attorney to release more information, including police video. VIGIL FOR CHINEDU OKOBI, UNARMED FATHER KILLED BY POLICE TASER! He was also a spoken word poet who had strong views on issues and always well-dressed. About 10 years ago, he began to struggle with mental health issues. Okobi’s family suspected that he may have stopped taking his medication earlier this year. “This was a heavy-handed approach against someone who very likely was laboring under mental health conditions. They may have not known that up front, but observations should’ve alerted them that something was going on,” said Burris, who was also involved in the high-profile cases of Oscar Grant and Rodney King . Okobi is the latest victim in a series of several police killings of mentally ill Black men. The growing list includes Shaheed Vassell , Jontell Reedom and Marcus-David L. Peters . Wagstaffe expected the investigation to take between eight to 10 weeks. An autopsy report has not yet been completed. SEE ALSO: Where Is Kierra Coles? Black Juror In O.J. Simpson Trial Describes Not Guilty Verdict As “Payback For Rodney King”

O.J. Simpson Trial Juror Admits Not Guilty Verdict Was “Payback” Ezra Edelman’s five-part ESPN 30 for 30 documentary “”O.J.: Made In America” examines the long history of police brutality against Blacks in Los Angeles, including the Rodney King beating — wherein 4 officers beat an unarmed driver nearly to death, eventually to each be found not guilty of any crime. In part 5 of the documentary, O.J. Trial Juror Carrie Bess admits that she and about 90% of the other jurors were somewhat looking for payback for the mega controversial Rodney King not guilty verdict from three years earlier. In a clip previewed on public radio show “Fresh Air” earlier today, Bess let it be known that the LAPD’s dirty dealings were at the forefront of jurors’ minds as they deliberated the details of O.J.’s case : Interviewer: Do you think there are members of the jury that voted to acquit OJ because of Rodney King?Bess: Yes. Interviewer: You do? Bess: Yes. Interviewer: How many of you do you think felt that way? Bess: Oh, probably 90 percent of them. Interviewer: 90 percent. Did you feel that way? Bess: Yes. Interviewer: That was payback. Bess: Uh-huh. Interviewer: Do you think that’s right? To this question, Bess simply tosses her hands up in the air. Since pretty much EVERYONE is clear that O.J. more than likely committed the murders of Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman, do you think the jurors were wrong for seeking the only vengeance they felt Black Americans could get at the time through this controversial case?? To Serve And Park: LAPD Cop Named Stacey Koon Tasered Rodney King’s Azz, Now He Drives A Limo! [Video]

Wait, the guy who beat Rodney King was a “Koon”?? Open my door ho! LAPD Cop That Beat Rodney King Is Now A Limo Driver According to TMZ reports : Stacey Koon — the former LAPD sergeant who did prison time for zapping Rodney King with a taser — has changed careers — he’s now driving a limo. An independent photog got Koon driving a limo for Music Express, the high-end private transport company. Koon, who was leaving LAX, scoffed at the photog, who asked if he had a reaction to Rodney King’s death. Koon was acquitted in the Simi Valley beating trial back in 1992 — and the acquittal triggered the L.A. riots. He was later convicted in federal court of civil rights violations and served 30 months in prison. Peep the video of this azzhole at his new day job below. Image via TMZ

Latoya Jackson Defends Herself Against Claims That She Looted Michael Jackson’s House According to TMZ reports : La Toya Jackson insists … she did not raid Michael Jackson’s home just hours after his death, pillaging plastic bags filled with cash — and now, she’s threatening to sue a major magazine for saying otherwise. Rodney King Cause of Death: Drugs, Alcohol, State of Delirium

The body of Rodney King was discovered at the bottom of a pool by his fiancee last month, with the cause of death listed as “accidental drowning.” That may technically still be the case, but the official death report has come out and it’s undeniable now that the man whose 1991 beating sparked riots in Los Angeles stumbled to his demise at the result of numerous substances in his body. It’s unclear if he jumped or fell into the water, according to the coroner, but King was “in a state of drug and alcohol induced delirium” at the time of his passing. “The effects of the drugs and alcohol, combined with [King’s preexisting heart condition] probably precipitated a cardiac arrhythmia and [King], thus incapacitated, was unable to save himself and drowned,” reads the report, which adds that King was lying naked in the deep end of the pool by the time EMTs arrived. Cynthia Kelly attempted to rescue her fiance with items such as a pitchfork, a hoe and a vacuum pool sweeper – all of which surrounded the area, the report confirms – because she considered herself a poor swimmer and was afraid of jumping in.

History Fast & Furious: Justin Lin In Talks To Direct L.A. Riots For Universal [VIDEO]

In what could be one of the unlikeliest director-project pairings to come down the pike in some time, Vulture is reporting that Fast & Furious franchise director Justin Lin is talking to Universal Pictures about directing L.A. Riots — a cinematic re-telling of the 1991 uprising that was sparked by four Los Angeles Police Department officers’ brutal beatdown of Rodney King. According to the website, the project was first set up at Universal six years ago, with Spike Lee set to direct a script by Red Tails screenwriter John Ridley, but the studio wouldn’t give the Do The Right Thing  filmmaker the $35 million he required to make the movie he wanted. If Lin gets the green light, he’ll be making the picture for Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment, but it’s unclear whether he’ll still be using Ridley’s script. Video of King’s vicious beating during a March 3, 1991 traffic stop became one of the most horrific and indelible images of that decade, and during the riots, the construction worker appeared on TV to utter his now-famous line: “Can we all get along?” In June, King became news again when he was found dead at the bottom of the swimming pool at his California home. The February shooting of unarmed Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch coordinator for a gated community in Sanford, Fla., also recalled the incident. Lin is currently shooting the sixth film in the Fast and Furious franchise, which is slated for a May 24, 2013 release date. According to Vulture, Universal is seeking to keep the director happy “by allowing him to tackle a topic that’s quite a bit more serious”, though budget remains a question. One talent agent told the website: “They didn’t want to make this movie for $35 million with Spike [Lee] four years ago, and with the way the business has changed, I can’t imagine they’re going to spend even $20 million to make it now.” Watch It On YouTube.
