Twilight vs. The Hunger Games: Which Series Will Come Out On Top?

With Lionsgate’s big screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ teen-centric sci-fi survival-adventure The Hunger Games hitting screens this week, it’s kind of impossible not to draw comparisons to that other YA juggernaut series, which concludes its billion-dollar run on pop culture this fall. So how does The Hunger Games measure up to Twilight ? Some spoilers follow. THE BOOKS Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight , first published in 2005, spawned a total of four books (and one spin-off novella) that were adapted into five movies ( Breaking Dawn Part 2 hits screens this November), with over 116 million copies in print. Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games , first published in 2008, spawned a total of three books set to be adapted into four movies, with over 26 million copies in print. Advantage: Twilight THE HEROINE Twilight : Bella Swan is a 17-year-old girl who moves to gloomy Forks, Washington and falls in love with a vampire. Unassuming and average, she finds her inner strength after four novels’ worth of being imperiled by embracing her destiny and starting a family. Hunger Games : Katniss Everdeen is a 16-year-old girl who lives in gloomy District 12 in the fascist future world of Panem and must fight for her life in a televised battle royale. A skilled huntress, she finds her inner heroine after three novels’ worth of being a pawn in the Capitol’s games by embracing her destiny and becoming a symbol of the resistance. Advantage: Hunger Games SUPER POWERS (AND SUPER WEAKNESSES) Twilight : Left at the mercies of other people’s protection, Bella’s the lame duck for most of the saga, until she discovers that her secret power is, literally, the ability to protect her loved ones. Seriously. Meanwhile, her love for Edward keeps threatening to ruin everything – prom, her sex life, the future of all vampirekind. Hunger Games : Empowered at an early age thanks to her father’s untimely death, Katniss is the provider in her family for most of her life, until she enters the Games and discovers that compassion for others, and the newfound ability to trust in Peeta, is the key to survival. Her only weakness, it could be said, is that her personal drive to survive is so strong she has trouble seeing the big picture, and her place in it. Advantage: Hunger Games THE LOVE TRIANGLE Twilight : Bella must choose between two suitors – Edward Cullen, the sparkly vampire, and Jacob Black, her werewolf BFF. Heated tent scenes, make-out sessions, and torrid glances ensue. Hunger Games : Katniss must choose between two suitors – Peeta, the golden baker’s son (and her fellow Tribute in the Hunger Games), and Gale, her earthy BFF. Play-acted cave scenes, tender kisses, and internal struggles ensue – that is, when Katniss isn’t busy, you know, fighting for her life. Advantage: Twilight THE THEMES Twilight : Love, lust, abstinence, teen pregnancy, motherhood, sexuality vs. sin. Hunger Games : Fighting injustice, taking a stand, trusting others, personal responsibility. Advantage: Hunger Games. THE ONSCREEN PG-13 ACTION Twilight : Speed-ramped vampire running, bad wirework, CG werewolf-vampire melees, non-gory limb-shattering/ripping/beheadings, and one vivid, suggestive C-section by vampire scene. Hunger Games : Training exercises, arrow-shooting, hand-to-hand combat, bladed weapons, Tracker Jacker (i.e. hallucination-inducing poison bee) attacks, and one vivid, suggestive shaky-cam Cornucopia melee. Advantage: Hunger Games FILM PEDIGREE Twilight : Installments directed by Catherine Hardwicke ( Twilight ), Chris Weitz ( New Moon ), David Slade ( Eclipse ), and Oscar-winner Bill Condon ( Breaking Dawn Parts 1 & 2 ). Top Rotten Tomatoes score: Eclipse , at 49%. Hunger Games : The Hunger Games directed by Oscar-nominee Gary Ross, who is set to direct the next sequel, Catching Fire . Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 100% (with 17 reviews in). Advantage: Hunger Games — Seems like The Hunger Games has the edge over Twilight by most of the above criteria, stemming from its more complex and stirring lead character, story, and themes. That said, Twilight fandom outpaces Hunger Games fandom by the millions, circulation-wise. Will solid critical reviews and stellar pre-release ticket sales help bump The Hunger Games to Twilight -level box office returns — and convince non-fans to give it a shot? Sound off below, Movieliners!

Jennifer Aniston Aggressively Hypes Her Nonexistent Nude Scene

Ok guys, get your rotten tomatoes ready, because this is just ridiculous. After reportedly insisting that producers cut her topless scene from her new movie Wanderlust , Jennifer Aniston has been going on a media blitz to promote the film. “So what”, you say? Here’s what: she will not shut up about how great her nude scene was . in an interview with Entertainment Tonight Canada , Jennifer says that ” ‘Liberating’ is a good word to use ” to describe the experience of shooting her topless scene, which she says ” fit the spirit of the movie .” Not only that, but she went on Chelsea Lately last night for an interview that skewed heavily towards discussing the nude scene that reportedly isn’t even in the film , including this infuriating statement by Chelsea Handler : “I’ve been lucky enough to see you topless in our private life, but now America, when they go to see the movie, will get to see her topless running!” Jen went on to say of her naked male co-stars, ” Finally, for once, the men have to disrobe! Trust me, there is your fair share of breasticles as well …” Breasticles? BREASTICLES?? Commence fruit-flinging…now!

‘This Means War’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics aren’t buying into the love triangle between Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. By Kara Warner Tom Hardy and Chris Pine in “This Means War” Photo: 20th Century Fox “This Means War” has all the makings of a perfect romantic comedy/ action flick, including the very attractive and high-caliber stars Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, the capable direction of McG, comic relief from Chelsea Handler and a script from the guys whose combined talents have brought us “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” “Sherlock Holmes,” “Role Models” and “Just Go With It.” The story revolves around two best friends and highly skilled CIA agents who fall in love with the same woman and go to war with each other in an effort to win her heart. We imagine the filmmakers set out to make a fun, if only slightly farfetched, popcorn flick, but the critical masses couldn’t seem to suspend their disbelief. The film has a 30 percent Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes . Read on as we fight through the “This Means War” reviews! The Story “Having great-looking stars who have the added bonus of actually being able to act makes the noisy romp “This Means War” more tolerable that it ought to be. It’s essentially a love-triangle version of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” rendered even more bombastic in the hands of “Charlie’s Angels” director McG. (Simon Kinberg, who wrote the 2005 film that spawned Brangelina, shares script credit here with Timothy Dowling.) So you’ve got your sport utility vehicles tumbling in slow motion, your gravity-defying shootouts and your obligatory explosions galore. Naturally, the premise is the most high-concept, contrived confection: Two CIA agents (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) who happen to be best friends also happen to fall in love with the same woman (Reese Witherspoon), who has no idea these guys know each other. They promise their shared pursuit won’t ruin their friendship, but good luck with all that.” — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press The Bromance Factor “The relationship that truly sizzles — from the sentiment to the satire — is the one between FDR (Pine) and Tuck (Hardy), with Pine and Hardy pulling off one of the better bromances in recent memory. … Hardy (“Inception”) and Pine (“Star Trek”) are the heart of the film — proving to be excellent opposing sides of the same coin. Both balance their characters’ cynicism with a certain sweetness, their chemistry fairly crackling, electrifying the screen almost any time they’re sharing it, whether taking down a bad guy or squabbling about who is more lovable (it’s a tossup). With Lauren, on the other hand, they are basically gentlemen, so not electrifying.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times The Suspension of Disbelief Factor, or Lack Therof “And in the film’s opening minutes, it feels as if that might be the desired effect: It’s loaded with overblown action chestnuts like from-the-hip gunplay, people dangling from the sides of skyscrapers and a gruff commanding officer. (That would be Angela Bassett, who shows up periodically to growl at her charges in a role that might have been hilarious had anyone thought to write anything legitimately funny for her.) But a good parody takes a finesse that isn’t in the vocabulary of McG, a bargain-basement Michael Bay more concerned with cool than coherence. Instead we get utter nonsense like a video store with a database that conveniently includes customer photos for the CIA to tap into. (Related: These characters are, in 2012, going to a video store?) In another scene, FDR wrestles on the floor with a small dog that has just attacked him, as Lauren stands 5 feet away, oblivious. The Farrelly brothers should sue the producers not for stealing the scene outright from ‘There’s Something About Mary,’ but for imitating it so badly.” — Ian Buckwalter, NPR The Final Word “Part spy caper, part buddy picture, part romantic comedy, part raunchy-girl-talk sex farce, This Means War has been assembled with all the haphazardness of an amateur science experiment. The project was directed by the amped-up industry go-getter McG (Charlie’s Angels), and it’s had a long trial-and-error history. The initial script dates back a century — or at least about a decade — and the string of famous guys who didn’t take the dual lead male roles reportedly includes Bradley Cooper, Seth Rogen, Sam Worthington, and, stretching even further back, Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence. All this fiddling and fumbling shows on the screen. And yet, and yet … I confess I enjoyed everything that’s all over the place about the finished product. ‘This Means War’ may have been hammered together by brute Hollywood force, but there’s this going for it: It’s game to throw in anything that’ll keep the motor running.” — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly Check out everything we’ve got on “This Means War.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Critic’ Sticks Up For One For the Money

What? We ruined a perfect 0% on Rotten Tomatoes for this? “[Katherine] Heigl herself does an okay job in the role. She never quite pulls off the Jersey persona but she comes close enough. With her dyed brown hair and slightly more curvy appearance she certainly looks better than I’ve ever seen her look. I never thought of her as that attractive before, but she’s quite sexy here. She should definitely keep the dark hair. Despite the weakness of the mystery and the failure of the humor to be as funny as it should be, there is just enough of everything plus a dose of likable charm from Heigl to keep the story moving along.” Get me my pitchfork and torch, please . Justin Bieber Debuts Darker Locks

Teen superstar was spotted with new hairstyle in Los Angeles over the weekend. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber (file) Photo: Getty Images About a year ago, Justin Bieber made headlines when he lopped off his famous locks in favor of a shorter do. Now, almost 12 months later, he’s once again making some hair-related headlines. So, what has Bieber done now that has everyone buzz ing? Well, over the weekend, the Biebs was spotted in Los Angeles donning much darker hair than his trademark sandy blond. When Bieber cut off his hair last year, MTV News spoke to his hairstylist, Vanessa Price , who told us about his new look, noting that it had a lot to do with Bieber’s growing pains. “We knew it was going to be a big deal,” Price explained. “We knew it was going to shock fans, but we also knew it was going to be a change in terms of growing up. I think that’s something that people adjust to. “We’d been talking about it for a while and shared some ideas, but literally the day of he was adamant about the haircut. He amped himself up for it,” Price continued, before describing his momentary hesitation. “The minute we started cutting, he was like, ‘Wait, wait, wait.’ He loves it. He’s enjoying it.” The new hair color coincides with his girlfriend Selena Gomez’s hairstyle changes. She recently tweeted a photo of herself sporting multi-colored highlights in her hair. Bieber’s new look may be part of a makeover for his upcoming album, Believe, slated for release later this year. He confirmed last week that Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am will appear on the album. Not only does Bieber want to grow up when it comes to his look but also when it comes to his music. “The only conversation we’ve had about Justin’s album that we’re about to do is it’s really important that it’s the proper transition, because we’ve seen him [with] ‘Baby,’ now we’re watching him grow up,” Bieber’s longtime vocal producer Kuk Harrell told MTV News in November. “And we can’t just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition.” Related Photos Justin Bieber’s Famous Former Hair Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez: A Look Back In Photos Related Artists Justin Bieber

‘Contraband’ Sweeps Weekend Box Office

Re-release of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ takes #2 spot over four-day weekend. By Ryan J. Downey Mark Wahlberg and Ben Foster in “Contraband” Photo: Universal Pictures This weekend, moviegoers decided that for Mark Wahlberg, nothing is forbidden. “Contraband” was the #1 movie in America with a solid $28.8 million debut over the four-day weekend, according to studio estimates. The action thriller, which takes places in the world of drug-smuggling, beat Disney’s 3-D re-release of 1991’s “Beauty and the Beast,” which opened to $23.5 million. Wahlberg’s latest (a remake of an Icelandic flick) kicked off with a stronger opening weekend than his multiple Oscar winner “The Fighter” or previous action flicks “Max Payne” (2008) and “Shooter” (2007). The film has a “rotten” 48 percent score on film review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences who saw it gave it an “A-” CinemaScore. “Beauty and the Beast” is off to a great start despite following last year’s $29.3 million debut of Disney’s 3-D re-release “The Lion King.” (“The Lion King” made more than $422 million its first time around, while “Beast” took in less than half that amount.) The re-release will be followed by 3-D versions of fellow Disney classics “Finding Nemo,” “Monsters Inc.” and “The Little Mermaid” over the next two years. The weekend’s other new wide release, “Joyful Noise” (starring Queen Latifah and country music legend Dolly Parton), opened in fourth place with a lackluster $13.8 million. But it was last weekend’s #1 movie that suffered the biggest disappointment: “The Devil Inside” earned just $9.2 million over the four-day weekend, down 72 percent from its debut. That’s an incredibly steep drop, even for a horror flick, no doubt due to the film’s 6 percent Tomatometer rating and unusually low CinemaScore of “F.” But thanks to its big opening, the low-budget indie’s $46.3 million total is still more than the entire runs of “The Rite,” “Devil” or “The Last Exorcism.” Box-office receipts were up 4 percent this holiday weekend compared to last year. Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” earned the #3 spot as it collected another $14.2 million for a total domestic gross of nearly $190 million. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” was #5 with $10.5 million for a domestic total of $172.1 million for the Robert Downey, Jr.-led sequel. This weekend’s new releases will include “Underworld Awakening”; Steven Soderbergh’s action flick “Haywire” starring Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor and MMA champion / first-time actress Gina Sirico; the George Lucas-produced WWII flick “Red Tails”; and the limited release of Mexican drama “Miss Bala,” among others. “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” which earned a Critics’ Choice Award for young star Thomas Horn, will expand into wider release.
