Dating Game Killer Rodney Alcala Sentenced For 1970s Murders

Rodney Alcala, a.k.a. the Dating Game Killer, was sentenced Monday in NY to 25 years to life in prison for the murder of two women in the 1970s. Already convicted in the 1970s murders of four women and a 12-year-old girl in Southern California, Alcala must now serve even more prison time. Not that it will matter, as he’ll never see the light of day. In fact, Alcala said he wanted to plead guilty to the two New York murder counts so he could get back to California, where he was sentenced to death. In California, where he was convicted of five other killings , he wants to pursue an appeal; he has tangled with authorities in the Golden State for years. After a series of trials and retrials, he eventually was found guilty in 2010 of killing four women and a 12-year-old girl in Southern California in the 1970s.

Newtown Didn’t Happen, Professor Claims

A professor is causing befuddlement and outrage with recent claims that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn., did not occur. The Daily Mail reported that James Tracy, a tenured history professor at Florida Atlantic University, wrote this in a lengthy post on his personal blog. Tracy explores what he says is the possibility that the Newtown shooting may not have happened the way that it is widely believed, if it happened at all. The 47-year-old professor bases his claims largely on the flurry of conflicting media reports that were made as news of the shooting was released. The Daily Mail also reported that the school has distanced itself from the professor. “While it sounds outrageous, one is left to inquire whether the Sandy Hook shooting ever took place, at least in the way law enforcement authorities and the news media have described,” he says. On his blog, he hits a number of other conspiracy theories: September 11, the purview of the Department of Homeland Security, the PATRIOT Act, the death of Osama bin Laden and Fukishima. In his latest shocking claim, he focuses much of his attention on the fact that early reports claimed that police were either searching for or had two suspects in custody. The story then progressed that Ryan Lanza was the lone gunman, based reportedly on the identification that the shooter had on him at the time of the attack. Ryan, 24, was then found at his home in Hoboken, N.J. – two states away from where his 20-year-old brother Adam, the actual shooter, committed the atrocities. Police say Adam Lanza opened fire inside the Connecticut elementary school, killing 20 children and six adults. Police say Lanza then killed himself.

Peace Costs: Assault Weapons Buy-Back Program Could Cost New York State Over $1 Billion

Which would you rather have, less guns or more funds? New York State Says Assault Weapon Confiscation Could Cost $1 Billion Via NYPost New York state can’t afford to confiscate all the assault rifles out there. The number of such military-style weapons in the state — including the New York-made Bushmaster used in the Sandy Hook massacre — is at least 1 million, far higher than even some local criminal-justice experts realize, gun-industry experts say. And given that the weapons are worth $1,000 or more apiece, a buyback would cost the state at least $1 billion, since even Cuomo administration officials concede that their owners would have to be compensated financially. “The cost of confiscation would make it impracticable, if there’s anything approaching a million of them, putting aside the other issues that would be involved,’’ said one Cuomo administration source. Joke’s on the Gov. Last week, Gov. Cuomo suggested during a radio interview that “confiscation could be an option’’ when developing a newly restrictive policy on assault-style rifles. While a Cuomo aide estimated their number at just 30,000, industry experts who have firsthand knowledge of gun sales in New York over many years say there are “at least’’ a million semiautomatic rifles modeled on the military’s M16s legally in the hands of New Yorkers. We understand that people want to get these weapons off the streets ASAP, but it would be shame to spend ALL that money, which schools desperately need, on paying people for their weapons. Image via

A Lil Positivity: UConn Sets Up Full Scholarship Fund For Surviving Children And Siblings Of Sandy Hook Victims

A much-deserved act of kidness for the families of Sandy Hook Elementary School The University Of Connecticut Establishes Scholarship Fund For Sandy Hook Survivors And Siblings The University Connecticut is reaching out to provide a little relief for the surviving students and families of those that lost their lives during the tragic Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newton, Connecticut earlier this month. Surviving Sandy Hook students, as well as siblings of those children whose lives were taken will be eligible to receive scholarship funding to attend the University once they are of age, possible free of charge. via Huffington Post The University of Connecticut is creating a scholarship fund for students from Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, where 20 students and six staff members were gunned down last week. The Sandy Hook School Memorial Scholarship Fund will help pay college costs for Sandy Hook students who choose to attend UConn when they’re older. Siblings of the student victims and children of the adult victims also will be eligible. The awards will be need-based. Donations will be collected through the University of Connecticut Foundation. A spokesman says the foundation hasn’t set a fundraising goal and will decide later whether the scholarships can cover the students’ entire college costs. UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma (aw-ree-EH’-muh) and his wife have donated $80,000. The university says 650 other individual donations have been received in the fund’s first 24 hours. We’re certainly rooting for the University to raise enough money to send all of these children to college on full scholarships. After all that these families have been through, it’s well-deserved. Contact the University of Connecticut for more information on how to donate.
