Cool High-Rise Bat Habitat Draws Nature’s Pest-Fighters to NY Sculpture Park (Video)

The Bat Tower under construction in Griffis Sculpture Park. Photo via GOOD . If all goes well between now and Halloween, Griffis Sculpture Park in upstate New York will be ready for the spooky occasion with its very own colony of bats, thanks to the artsy “Bat Tower” a group of architectural students is building to draw the pest-fighting pollinators to the area — and raise awareness about the positive role these sometimes creepy-seeming critters play in the local ecosystem…. San Francisco prepares to build its first space port

With a rocket ship about to land by the Bay, can Starfleet Headquarters be far behind? Help San Francisco build its first space port – and support the arts, too! The Black Rock Arts Foundation writes: The 40-foot-tall art piece, The Raygun Gothic Rocketship, offers rococo-futuristic, highly-stylized vision of space travel circa 1930's-1940's science fiction and is the latest in a series of temporary public art exhibitions sponsored by BRAF with the aim of enlivening and activating public spaces. The installation first landed at Burning Man 2009, and has subsequently appeared at NASA Ames for Yuri's Night, and at Maker Faire. The piece is comprised of a single rocketship, poised as if to board passengers for a typical run to a nearby stellar destination. When installed in San Francisco, the sculpture will be accompanied by a descriptive exhibit, a “rocket stop”, which tells the story of the rocketship, provides route, schedule and other information. The installation will be illuminated for nighttime viewing. We need your support!!! Want to donate to the arts, and help build a rocket stop where cosmonauts can grab some lunch before heading back to the stars? ‘Touchdown Jesus’ statue in Ohio destroyed by lightning

Monroe fire officials set damage at $700,000 after lightning struck and burned down a 62-foot-high Jesus Christ statue and an adjacent amphitheater at Solid Rock Church late Monday. Church leaders are vowing to rebuild the iconic “King of Kings” statue — also dubbed “Touchdown Jesus” — which alone was valued at $300,000. Monroe Fire Capt. Richard Mascarella said the other $400,000 in damage was to the amphitheater when flames from the sculpture spread to the back wall and roof. “The heat coming off the statue singed the entire back wall of the amphitheater and burned through it,” Mascarella said. “Portions of the roof are destroyed, so they will have to replace a large part of it.” VIDEO OF FIRE: Watch here PHOTOS: “Touchdown Jesus” before fire PHOTOS: Jesus statue during and after fire A pond surrounding the statue that used to be full of fish is now filled with remnants of the structure, made of fiber glass and foam. All the fish are either dead or dying, Mascarella said. Church leaders also plan to repair the amphitheater and the pond and the structures were all insured. Insurance adjusters were expected at the site Tuesday afternoon. The fire is not suspicious. It was ignited about 11:15 p.m. Monday during a severe thunderstorm that spawned lightning across the Greater Cincinnati region, Mascarella said. John Centers, a Monroe assistant fire chief who lives about a mile from the church, said he was outside on his deck watching Monday night's storm when he saw a very bright flash of lightning accompanied by loud thunderclap. At first, he didn't think much of it, “because there had already been so many ground strikes that night,” Centers said. But he could tell that the lightning had struck fairly close by and “it was a very significant ground strike.” “The pattern of light flashed all the way to the ground,” and was in the general direction of the church, Centers said. He soon realized that must have been the lightning that struck the statue because within four minutes of his witnessing the strike, firefighters were being called to the blazing statue. added by: 02

Lady GaGa, Conan O’Brien, Others: Very Influential

Time Magazine has come out with its annual list of the world’s 100 most influential people. It’s divided into four categories (Leaders, Heroes, Thinkers and Artists), although we have no idea how Sarah Palin ended up in the number-nine slot as a “Leader.” What does she lead, exactly? Whatever organization pays her the most money to speak at its event? But anyway. Lady GaGa is considered the most influential artist on the planet, with Conan O’Brien ranking second. Also in the top 10: Oprah, Taylor Swift and Robert Pattinson . The magazine spoke to a number of people closely associated to these celebrities and received the following takes on them: Cyndi Lauper on Lady GaGa : Lady Gaga’s art captures the period we’re in right now. She isn’t a pop act, she is a performance artist. She herself is the art. She is the sculpture. George Lopez on Conan O’Brien : Conan’s tenacity and wit have been an inspiration to me on my own late-night show. I’m happy and proud that we’ll be playing on the same team when he comes to basic cable. Chris Weitz on Robert Pattinson : Rob is a reserved, bookish sort of specimen, a guy who’d rather spend the night at the corner table in the pub with friends — a bit of a weirdo, frankly, in the best sense. For the complete list of influential artists, see below. Lady Gaga Conan O’Brien Kathryn Bigelow Oprah Winfrey Valery Gergiev Robert Pattinson Ashton Kutcher Suzanne Collins Taylor Swift Neil Patrick Harris Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof Prince Lea Michele Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik Simon Cowell Neill Blomkamp Elton John Marc Jacobs David Chang Banksy Chetan Bhagat Sandra Bullock Ricky Gervais Han Han James Cameron
