Teen Pushes Tech Innovation In Nigeria Forward

A 15-year-old Nigerian teen is making waves in the tech industry with the creation of an app. Tomisin Ogunnubi ’s My Locator app—which is designed to find children who are lost—has introduced a new level of innovation to the technology sector in Nigeria, BBC reported. Tomisin Ogunnubi was just 12 when she created an app which helps lost children in Nigeria. The app—which she unveiled in 2016—utilizes the Google Maps feature to help individuals track those who are lost. There is also a functionality that allows users to add telephone numbers to the app so that they can easily share their location if an emergency were to occur. Since the launch of the app, it has been downloaded over 1,000 times. Ogunnubi says she was inspired to create My Locator because the security of children is something that is extremely important to her. “I was very conscious about security, thinking… there are different dangerous people, so I guess the idea of being able to go out safely might have been what triggered the idea for the app,” she told the news outlet. “But it was me then as my 12-year-old self-thinking, ‘Oh I’ve just learned how to create applications. How about I use what I have learned to create something that can be useful to me and other people?’” Leaders in the tech industry believe that Ogunnubi’s creation speaks volumes about the importance of racial representation in tech. Google Program Manager Aniedi Udo-Obong says Ogunnubi’s journey will encourage other Black children to follow in her footsteps. “I’m impressed with Tomisin’s app for two reasons. I prefer to see products in whatever state they are than to hear about the most brilliant idea. I like the fact that someone hatched an idea in their head and was able to bring it to fruition and complete it,” he said. He also added that there is a need for more STEM education initiatives in Nigeria stating that the country is “going to be left behind if we don’t get our own children learning at the same rate with the same tools and technologies that their contemporaries in other countries have.” Many educational institutions and non-profits are putting the focus on STEM education. Black Girls CODE, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating career pathways for young women of color in the tech industry, announced the development of a technology exploration lab in New York City. Woman Claims Target Employees Made Her Strip To Prove She Didn’t Steal A Bikini

Source: Jose Luis Pelaez Inc / Getty A Michigan woman is suing a local Target store after she was falsely accused of stealing a bikini. According to MLive.com ,  Ashanae Davis , 20, was shopping at a Southfield Target on May 29 with a bag from another store with a swimsuit in it. Out of nowhere, a white security guard grabbed her by the arm, while another one, who was Black, handcuffed her. From there, they dragged her into a room with three store employees: A white man, a Black man and white female manager, her attorney Jasmine Rand told the Associated Press . Then she says she was humiliated when they forced her to lift up her shirt and pull down her pants to show them she was not concealing merchandise. Ashanae Davis said she was forced to lift her shirt and pull down her pants in front of three Target employees after being falsely accused of stealing a bikini. https://t.co/uKbvzDMmUq — HuffPost BlackVoices (@blackvoices) June 6, 2018 “Initially, I was in shock. I couldn’t believe what was going on,” Davis told NBC News . “I was scared — afraid of what was going to happen next.” The swimsuit was later determined to be from another retailer, not stolen from Target. Even worse? According to Rand, “The African-American employee apologized to [Davis] and said, ‘This happens all the time,’ and he was afraid he would lose his job” if he didn’t participate. The other two [who were white] did not apologize at all.” Store officials has since apologized and have fired the security worker who initially grabbed Davis. “We want everyone who shops at Target to feel welcomed and respected and take any allegations of mistreatment seriously,” Target said in a statement. “We’re sorry for the actions of our former team member, who created an experience we don’t want any guest to have at Target. Upon reviewing our team’s actions, we terminated the team member who was directly involved.” But in Davis’ mind, this apology is not enough. She r ecently told Teen Vogue , “Target informed the public that it fired the black male loss prevention officer involved in the incident, but failed to fire the white male loss prevention officer and the white female manager, who — to me and my attorneys — are the two most guilty parties.” She added: “I do not feel vindicated or like justice has been served by Target allowing the black loss prevention officer to take the fall for the other employees and its company. That’s just another act of racial discrimination, and I hope [the black loss prevention officer] gets an attorney too. Hate can’t drive out hate.” Davis, along with her lawyers, are filing a suit against Target. This isn’t the first time Target has been accused of racial profiling this year. As NBC pointed out, a few months ago a Black man said he was  racially profiled at a Target in Waconia, Minnesota when he was told he couldn’t touch headphones he wanted to buy because they feared he would steal them. In addition, in April, Target agreed to a $3.7 million settlement in a lawsuit alleging that the company’s  criminal background check process was biased  against black and Latino applicants. Target, please get your act together. Donald Trump Resisted Having His Cell Phones Inspected For Hacking

Source: Rick Friedman / Getty Donald Trump’s cell phone use is not only a threat to our sanity daily, but it could also be a significant national security issue as well.  Politico reports that according to two senior administration officials, Agent Orange is still using cell phones that lack sophisticated security features to secure his communications. Trump loves to buck the system when it comes to his predecessors, so it really doesn’t shock us that he opts to not follow the common practice that protects him from hacking and surveillance. via GIPHY Administration officials revealed that Trump has stopped efforts to strengthen security to secure his daily cell phone use on numerous occasions. According to one official, White House Information Technology and the White House Communications Agency issued President Trump two phones, one for making calls and the other just for Tweeting and checking pre-loaded news sites (more than likely Fox News). The experts insist that Trump should swap out his weapon of mass distraction aka his tweeting phone every month. Trump feels otherwise claiming that it’s “too inconvenient” for him to do so and has gone as long as 5-months without his phone being checked by security experts. No one really knows how many times Trump’s call-capable cellphones have been swapped out since. The White House has yet to respond to Politico’s reporting, but a senior West Wing official states the call-capable phones  “are seamlessly swapped out on a regular basis through routine support operations. Because of the security controls of the Twitter phone and the Twitter account, it does not necessitate regular change-out.” Riiiigghht. President Barack Obama during his Presidency handed in his White House issued phones to telecommunications staffers every 30 days to be inspected for hacking and suspicious behavior. His phones didn’t even have a camera or microphone, but Trump’s still does making them a security risk. The West Wing official refuted those claims of course and tells Politico “Due to inherent capabilities and advancement in technologies, these devices are more secure than any Obama-era devices.” Let’s not forget Donald Trump as a candidate used to bash Hillary Clinton for her use of private email server while she was Secretary of State. But he can’t swap out his phone every 30-days for the safety of the country he took an oath to protect. With him currently engaged with China in a trade war and sit down with North Korea, you would think securing his phones is a priority. We see the jig here. — Photo:  Rick Friedman / Getty

Trey Songz’s Alleged Beatdown Vic Speaks Out: “People Stood & Watched!”

WOODLAND HILLS, CA – MARCH 13: Andrea Buera, who is accusing Trey Songz of assaulting her, speaks during a press conference with her attorney Lisa Bloom at The Bloom Firm on March 13, 2018 in Woodland Hills, California. Buera has already obtained a restraining order based on the alleged assault that took place February 18 in Hollywood. (Photo by Greg Doherty/Getty Images) Andrea Buera Said No One Helped Her While Singer Allegedly Assaulted Her At A Party The woman who claims singer Trey Songz choked and pummeled her at a private party last month has come forward to share her shocking story. A tearful Andrea Buera said she decided to come forward not only to stand up for herself, but to be an example for her seven-year-old daughter. Buera said the alleged assault happened at an after party Feb. 18 during NBA All Star weekend. “I was attending an after party when Trey began yelling at me, choking me, punching me and ultimately knocking me to the ground,” Buera, accompanied by her lawyer Lisa Bloom, said at a press conference in Los Angeles Tuesday. Buera said that none of the other partygoers tried to intervene, and that Trey’s punches didn’t stop until his security guard pulled the “Bottoms Up” singer off of her. “People stood and watched as some strayed away,” the woman said. (Photo by Greg Doherty/Getty Images) Buera said she tried to leave, and took out her phone to call an Uber. But the allegedly enraged singer grabbed the phone and threw it off a cliff. When she took out a second phone, she said he didn’t the same thing. “I was crying, terrified, in shock and I just wanted to go home,” she said. Buera went to the police following the incident, and successfully obtained a domestic violence restraining order against the singer. Bloom, her lawyer, has asked witnesses to come forward. Trey has denied jumping Buera. The woman said the alleged battering left her with a concussion and bruising, but her emotional scars have been even worse. She said she’s been struggling to cope since the alleged beat down occurred. “I had to go to the hospital because he hit me so hard that I had a concussion and was throwing up from the migraines,” Buera recalled. “I wake up in the middle of the night having flashbacks as it constantly replays in my head.” Hit the flip for more pics of Buera’s alleged injuries:
