Why It’s Time For Fred Armisen to Hand Over SNL’s Obama to Jay Pharoah

Last week, the news broke that President Obama split his lip playing a pickup game of basketball. My thoughts immediately began to drift toward the parody Saturday Night Live would no doubt have done this past weekend — and which I presume remains imminent after the show’s week off. Then I remembered, Oh yeah: It’s still Fred Armisen doing Obama and not Jay Pharoah. Never mind.

Which Famous Men Have Inspired Sofia Coppola’s Lead Characters?

While there is not much confusion about (or variation among) the themes Sofia Coppola has explored in her four feature films, she has encountered some speculation and rumor-mongering about the inspiration for some of her male characters. Continuing this trend, Coppola has recently copped to basing Somewhere ‘s disillusioned actor (played by Stephen Dorff) on a collection of famous actors, including one Coppola family member. In honor of this acknowledgment, Movieline reviews the famous men from whom Sofia gleaned both alleged and admitted inspiration the past decade.

Sofia Coppola Calls ‘Breaking Dawn’ Love Story ‘So Romantic’

‘I’m impressed by Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattison pulling it off,’ director says, confirming she was in talks to helm the ‘Twilight’ finale. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Sofia Coppola Photo: MTV News While the “Breaking Dawn” director’s chair for both parts 1 and 2 is officially occupied by Bill Condon, “Twilight” fans know that there were several other high-profile names attached to the project before Condon signed on. Among them was “Lost in Translation” and “Marie Antoinette” director Sofia Coppola. When we caught up with the writer/director to discuss her upcoming Chateau Marmont-set film, “Somewhere,” we asked her if there was any truth to the “Dawn” director rumors. “Yeah, yeah, I talked to them about that,” Coppola revealed to MTV News. “I was interested in doing something but I didn’t end up doing it. But I love, I’m impressed by Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattison pulling it off in that whole story,” she said. “And my friend’s kids love the story so much that I thought it would be fun to make something that they love so much.” Asked what she liked best about the blockbuster vampire franchise, Coppola admitted she goes weak in the knees for romance. “I just love that it’s so romantic,” she told us. “I’m always a sucker for a love story and also to do something for teenagers, because I feel like, why not have beautiful cinematography and all these things in a kid movie? Usually it looks like it’s not crafted very sophisticated, and I feel like it’d be nice to bring that kind of style into a younger film.” Perhaps the studio heads can line up Coppola for the talked-about film version of the “Eclipse” novella, “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner” ? Postcard from Venice: Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere Tranfixes, Julian Schnabel’s Miral Disappoints

Film festivals aren’t always the glamorous affairs they’re made out to be. Aside from the usual red carpet action, at most festivals it’s unusual to see famous types out and about, potentially rubbing shoulders with mere mortals. And as much as I love the occasional random surprise celebrity sighting, that’s fine with me. The downside to most festivals is that there’s too much to see in an extremely short amount of time, and I need some real life banked around my movies.

The Verge: Laura Ramsey

In Middle Men , Laura Ramsey plays a woman who parlays an ignoble beginning (selling sex on the internet) into a lucrative business, and in some ways, it’s a fortuitous match of actress and character. Ramsey, too, paid her dues in productions she’d probably rather forget (like MTV’ s reality flop The Real Cancun ), but she’s since built a promising career as an actress, with notable appearances in projects like The Ruins, The Covenant , and Mad Men. She called up Movieline to talk about fake online profiles, and donning a sailor hat for Sofia Coppola.

Sofia Coppola And Phoenix’s Thomas Mars Have Baby Girl

Cosima is the couple’s second child, joining 3-year-old sister Romy. By Eric Ditzian Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars Photo: Getty Images Oscar-winning director Sofia Coppola and Grammy-winning Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars have recently given birth to their second baby girl, People magazine reports. Named Cosima, the girl was born “within the last month,” a source told the magazine. The newborn is the couple’s second daughter, joining Romy, who is now 3 years old. The couple began dating in 2005 and revealed that Coppola, who won a best writing Oscar for “Lost in Translation,” was pregnant in December. The duo have most recently collaborated on Coppola’s upcoming film “Somewhere,” with Phoenix writing what Mars has described as a “very minimal” soundtrack for the project. “She asked us to do some music, very in the spirit of ‘Love Like a Sunset,’ so we tried to put that track and elements of the track in the movie, and it worked well,” Phoenix guitarist Christian Mazzalai told MTV Radio. “And then we wrote very small pieces of music, very minimal music for the movie too. … We’re very proud of it.” “This is the first time we feel [that] the music fits to the picture,” bassist Deck D’Arcy added. “We’ve [been on] many soundtracks before, and it’s always weird for us — producers must like [our songs], of course, if they use them — but for us, it’s always weird to see them in the films.” Starring Stephen Dorff as a Hollywood bad boy, “Somewhere” takes place largely at the famed Chateau Marmont hotel. The first trailer dropped earlier this month, with the film expected to hit theaters in December. Mars, meanwhile, continues to tour with Phoenix, which won a Best Alternative Music Album Grammy last year. The band kicked off the latest leg of their tour June 11 in North Carolina and then headed off to Germany and the U.K. They’ll weave throughout Europe before returning to the States in August and finally wrapping up in Mexico City at the end of September.
