VIDEO: Tyler Perry is Richest Entertainer to Be Lampooned on SNL

For comics and cultural critics of virtually every color and persuasion, Tyler Perry is the textbook definition of an easy target: A mogul whose media empire rests atop a foundation of alleged minstrelsy, union-busting, cross-dressing, bad hit television and mass-produced screen melodrama. Add his recently disclosed $130 million annual earnings to the picture, and it’s like the target was moved within inches of its respective shooters — one of whom, perhaps obviously, was Saturday Night Live .

Casting the New Mortal Kombat Movie’s Biggest Characters

The “Whitest Oscars” In A While Picks — Have You Seen Any of These Flicks?

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards will be held on February 27, 2011. As usual, Black actors are largely absent from the nominee roll call. How could they be considered for the big W? They aren’t even contenders for significant roles in these films. Traditionally, Oscar picks are selected due to their high artistic value — which is subjectively determined by a group of voters. The dearth of Black actors in film begs many to wonder whether minorities are simply written out ofl events due to the perspective of the writers and directors (usually white men) or purposely excluded from films because their buying dollars aren’t perceived as relevant to the film industry’s gatekeepers (executive producers, who finance flicks). Either way, it’s offensive. Here’s a round up of the movies selected for “Best Picture” and the billion dollar question is … have you seen them?

First Listen: ‘Bred and Buttered’ by John Hawkes, from Winter’s Bone

“I’m the kind of songwriter who isn’t good on spec,” confesses John Hawkes. “Sometimes I can sit down and a song will kind of happen, but more likely, an idea will follow me around for months and shove me into a corner until there’s no more choice and it just comes out.” So how did the actor end up on the soundtrack to Winter’s Bone , the just-released indie where Hawkes stars opposite Jennifer Lawrence?
