Boots Riley Talks Spike Lee Beef, Regina King Wins Big & More Highlights From The 2019 Independent Spirit Awards

Source: Faye Sadou/AdMedia / Splash News The Outspoken Filmmaker Sets The Record Straight While many people were gearing up for the Oscars this weekend, another important night in cinema went down on Saturday with the 34th Independent Spirit Awards. One of the highlights came from filmmaker Boots Riley whose movie Sorry to Bother You won Best First Feature. On the red carpet, Boots addressed his very public beef with Spike Lee over his movie BlacKkKlansman.  Boots was very critical of the film’s historical aspects and according to him, his critique caused some slightly awkward run-ins with Spike: “I saw him at the Governor’s Ball, and he yelled at me as he walked away saying, ‘I’m Miles Davis , you’re Chet Baker’ over and over.” In other words, Spike was aligning himself with one of the most celebrated jazz artists of all time while comparing Boots to his arguably lesser White counterpart Chet Baker . Luckily, the spicy words didn’t phase Boots too hard. He went on to say: “And then I saw him at the D.G.A. lunch-in and he was like come here and then, he gave like the one-handed hug and just said ‘squashed?’” To which Boots replied “squashed.” Viola. Peace in the indie streets…   Boots went on to give a moving speech for his Best First Feature win. Hit the next pages to to check out his words, along with acceptance speeches from Regina King, Barry Jenkins , and the people behind If Beale Street Could Talk , which won Best Feature.

Baby Please Don’t Go: Robin Thicke Sings “Let’s Stay Together”At Concert To Get Paula Patton Back

That damn Robin never gives up. Robin Thicke Sings Let’s Stay Together To Get Paula Patton Back How many times does Robin have to bare his soul on stage before Paula forgives him? According to People: In words and song, Robin Thicke is still trying to woo back wife Paula Patton. The soulful crooner’s latest plea was at his Atlantic City concert at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa on Sunday night. As Thicke interacted with the crowd in the middle of his show, a fan yelled, “I love Paula!” “I do too,” Thicke responded before belting out Al Green’s quintessential take me back song, “Let’s Stay Together.” Thicke first paid tribute to the actress at his show in Washington D.C., on Thursday. “I want everybody here to know that I’m trying to get my girl back,” he said before singing “Lost Without U,” his 2007 hit single that Patton inspired. Patton has yet to publicly acknowledge his emotional cry to stay together. Meanwhile, she was all smiles at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday night – and looked radiant at Vanity Fair’s Annual Oscar party on Sunday night. The couple has been married since 2005 and met while in high school. They are parents to son, Julian, 3½. Robin’s tears might be a day late and a dollar short where  Paula is concerned. Poor thang. Michelle Williams and Jason Segel Break Up

Michelle Williams and Jason Segel have ended their romance of a year. The actors, both 32, quietly broke up earlier this month, sources say. They seemed happy together as recently as January, when they were photographed on vacation in Cancun, but long distance reportedly did them in . The stars kept an extremely low profile throughout their relationship, rarely acknowledging the romance in public or being photographed together on purpose. Segel spoke vaguely about Michelle Williams last April, telling Extra , “I think we would just very much like to be happy. That’s all I’m going to say about it.” We wish them the best in this difficult time.

Lawbreakers, Unite: After NYFCC Awards, Is Matthew McConaughey An Oscar Contender?

All right, all right, all right. Awards season has officially gotten down in the dirt with a little bit of glorious stank. The New York Film Critics Circle , an august body despite three years of madness under Armond White’s leadership, has named Matthew McConaughey the year’s best supporting actor for his work in both Magic Mike and Bernie . With this double-gun recognition, my guess is that the group felt this was a salute to McConaughey’s leading performance in Killer Joe , and all the forced fried chicken-sucking it included, too. It’s quite a comeback. For years McConaughey served merely two purposes: appearing in dreadful rom coms like Failure to Launch and having a last name that drove copyeditors crazy. But we knew – we knew that beneath the skin of that shirtless Texan beat the heart of a courageous and unpredictable performer who could, when given a chance, deliver. I don’t know a single person who hasn’t been itching for an excuse to love this guy again. McConaughey’s turn as Dallas , the “Den Father,” I guess you could call him, of the strippers in Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike , is now a genuine contender for the Golden Globes and the Oscars . (No diss to Bernie , but Magic Mike was a bonafide box office hit, has Warner Bros. behind it and, you know, ass chaps.) Plus he’s already gotten a nomination for it and Killer Joe at the Spirit Awards in the bag. Our suggestion to M-McC: just keep livin’. The rest of the world is now hip to how awesome you can be. Of course, not everyone can recognize greatness when they see it. A sampling on Twitter shows jubilant critics (someone pass CinemaBlend’s Katey Rich some smelling salts) but more than one wiesenheimer suggests that a McConaughey win for his acting prowess is actually part of the Mayan’s countdown to extinction. What do you make of the McConaughey NYFCC win? Will he gyrate his way into the Oscar race now? Follow Jordan Hoffman on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Watch Seth Rogen Take Down Brett Ratner, Mel Gibson, Oscars in Spirit Awards Monologue

Any great awards show monologue skewers the nominees and sets the tone for the festivities to come, and this weekend’s awards tour didn’t disappoint — if you were watching the Film Independent Spirit Awards and not the Oscars, that is. Host Seth Rogen trumped Billy Crystal the day before the Academy Awards when he roasted Hollywood’s brightest along with Spirit Award nominees (like “creepy” — and apparently good humored — Michael Shannon). As for Rogen’s best joke? It’s got to be a toss up between his Ratner snipe (“Without awards season we wouldn’t know how much of a horrible bigot Brett Ratner is”) and his Lars von Trier hiding-in-Argentina bit. Hit the jump to watch the magic.
