Future Explains Difficulty Shooting ‘Tony Montana’ Video

Rapper films ‘Scarface’-inspired video in the Dominican Republic: ‘It took five hours in customs, getting searched 10 times.’ By Steven Roberts Future Photo: MTV News Rappers love “Scarface.” While “Goodfellas” and “A Bronx Tale” might be better movies, rappers just can’t get enough of Tony Montana. The 1983 Oliver Stone film starring Al Pacino is a favorite because of the parallels MCs have drawn between their lives and Montana’s. After all the movie posters in those old episodes of “Cribs” and the many mentions of “Scarface” and character Alejandro Sosa in rhymes, Atlanta’s Future has a song simply called “Tony Montana.” The track, which finds Future rapping as Montana, has started to gain legs outside of his stronghold of Atlanta — thanks in large part to a feature from Drake — and, of course, the next step is a video. When MTV News caught up with Future on Monday afternoon, he revealed he spent the past weekend shooting the clip in the beautiful Dominican Republic with director Jessy Terrero. Yes, Montana was from Cuba, but Future learned it isn’t easy shooting in foreign countries, let alone one with which the U.S. has longstanding political problems. “It was hard [enough] getting over to the Dominican Republic and getting all the permits,” Future said. “I wanted to go to Cuba, but I couldn’t get over there because of the passports and going through customs. It took five hours in customs, getting searched 10 times, going to the Dominican Republic. Getting back, they damn near didn’t want me to come back to America.” Future said it was a difficult process making the video, but it will be worth it once fans see his and Terrero’s vision. Drake is expected to be featured in the clip, although his part wasn’t filmed in the D.R. Unlike in the film, Future said the video finds him leaving the States. “I get a call from overseas saying there’s been some robberies going on, and they want me to come over there and handle it,” he explained. “It’s like a caper, and I’m just getting down to it, trying to find out who’s in charge and who’s pulling the robberies. It’s a movie on wax.” Related Artists Future

Occupy Wall Street: How Movement Stays Organized

Daniel Depaula explains protesters’ nightly General Assembly to MTV News. By Steven Roberts Facilitators speak at nightly General Assembly Photo: MTV News The demonstrators of Occupy Wall Street have made Lower Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park their home for the foreseeable future, and they haven’t ignored setting ground rules. Establishing an infrastructure in the park — now dubbed Liberty Park — was one of the demonstrators’ top priorities, ensuring everyone would have access to basic and essential resources. Many, if not all, of those decisions are reached at the General Assembly. The General Assembly is held every night at roughly 7 p.m., and everyone is invited to contribute. MTV News caught up with Daniel Depaula, one the facilitators of the GA, earlier this week. He explained how his group — the facilitation group — sets the evening’s agenda based on proposals and then presents them to the assembly. “We’re not really there to decide whether things are good or not,” Depaula explained. “We are simply there just to make sure that the people proposing are aware of how the process works. So they don’t run into any surprises once it goes to the assembly. “There are really no leaders or anyone with any power that anyone else doesn’t have,” he added. “Decisions are made autonomously by individuals or by groups, and larger issues are just brought to the assembly and discussed among everyone.” What’s even more interesting is how the proposals are pitched. The demonstrators at Occupy Wall Street aren’t allowed to have megaphones, because they would cause too much noise pollution in the area, so they are forced to shout their proposal to the crowd, which then echoes the proposal for those further away. The massive game of telephone allows everyone to be involved in the decisions, and they’re instructed at the beginning of the assembly how to respond (hands in the air if they agree, hands straight ahead of them if they’re unsure, and hands downwards if they disagree). On Monday night’s agenda: Whether to buy storage bins to maintain organization and cleanliness in the park. As the demonstration attracts more people, more waste is produced, so they want to keep things tidy. The group has a donation pool of money, but of course they have to vote first. Fat Joe Says Chris Brown Collabo Is ‘Crazy’

‘We getting so sexy for the ladies on this album,’ rapper tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts Fat Joe Photo: MTV News The O.D.: Fat Joe Fat Joe ‘s recent weight loss has the Bronx MC brimming with confidence. His last album, The Darkside Vol. 1, was a hard-nosed dedication to the streets led by his Jeezy collaboration “(Ha Ha) Slow Down.” For his next LP it isn’t the Snowman who will lend the assist but Chris Brown. “We getting so sexy for the ladies on this album,” the Don Cartagena told Mixtape Daily. “My first single that we’re gonna drop in three weeks is me and Chris Brown, it’s called ‘Another Round.’ It’s crazy.” The Terror Squad leader won’t completely abandon the streets, however. “I got a joint with Maxwell on the album, I got a joint with John Legend and [Rick] Ross, we’re straight talking to the ladies. Of course I’m gonna give you some bop, bop,” he said. “I thug ’em out on the sexy songs, but we’re talking to the ladies on this one.” Through the years, Joe Crack has recorded hits with R. Kelly, Ashanti and Trey Songz. The rapper says that all of his collaborations begin with a feeling. “I will not collaborate or do a song with nobody unless I think it is a huge, huge event. I will not bother one of my friends,” he said regarding his upcoming single with Chris Breezy, with whom he once toured Africa. To prove his point, Joe mentioned Mary J. Blige. While the two have been friends for years, Crack hasn’t reached out for a feature. “I have been dying to do a song with Mary J. Blige; she hangs out in my house, she’s family,” he said. “But I would not approach her with a record unless it’s a smash-hit event.” Related Artists Fat Joe Chris Brown

Fat Joe Says Weight Loss ‘Not Rocket Science’

Attention since ‘Drop a Body’ video ‘is crazy,’ Joe tells MTV News. By Steven Roberts Fat Joe Photo: MTV News Fat Joe ‘s video for “Drop a Body” was filled with volcanic eruptions, lightning and a mountain of dead bodies, but when the video dropped in June, Joe’s appearance overshadowed all of that. A considerably slimmer Joe stood atop said mountain, raising eyebrows and the clip’s number YouTube views. Joe said he was just as shocked by people’s reactions to his weight loss, because he was just trying to save his life. “I’m not trying to impress nobody or nothing like that,” Joe told MTV News. “I’m just trying to get healthy so I can be here for my family and take care of my kids and live the life that was intended for me to live, so it was crazy when I started getting all this attention. Two weeks from now, CNN is coming to my house, Sanjay Gupta, a big special, and all this attention is crazy.” Joe said he was 360 pounds when he started losing weight, and after finding himself at much-more-manageable 260 pounds a year later, he still wasn’t satisfied. Initially, he wanted to lose weight because in the past year, several of his friends have lost their lives due to their weight. Joe recalled attending one of his friends’ funerals and seeing himself in that position. He knew then it was time to make a change. “I went to my friend’s funeral in the Bronx, and he was just the funniest, coolest dude on earth,” Joe recalled. “He’s got a daughter, she’s the same age as my daughter, and it just felt like I was there, and I could just see my family in the funeral and I was like, ‘Damn, he left his daughter, and she’s only 5,’ ” he explained. “That was the wake-up call. Then I just jumped on that treadmill and started eating right. It’s not rocket science: It’s the same thing they keep telling you to do, you actually just have to do it.” Joe said he always asked God why he continued to bless him, despite his past and him not being a perfect person. And then he realized his weight-loss battle might be his calling. He hopes that he can inspire others to do the same. “One of my boys lives in Detroit, he said he came out his building, he got two dudes that been the fattest dudes on the block forever, they have weights outside and was running around the block, and he was like, ‘Yo, what’s up?’ and they were like, ‘We on that Fat Joe wave!’ ” Related Artists Fat Joe

Frank Ocean’s ‘Novacane’ Video: One-Night Stands And Pandas

Odd Future crooner’s eerie clip hit the Web on Thursday. By Steven Roberts Frank Ocean Photo: MTV News Since the release of his mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra this past February, Frank Ocean has gone from a relatively unknown songwriter to the Internet’s best-kept secret, and now he may be poised to be music’s next big thing. But with Ocean choosing to do very little press, his appearance in Tyler, the Creator’s “She” video may be one of the only times many people have seen the Odd Future crooner besides a handful of press photos. That all changed Thursday: The video for Ocean’s “Novacane,” one of Nostalgia ‘s many standout cuts, just hit the Web. The Nabil Elderkin-directed clip features Ocean in what looks like a dimly lit hotel suite. With each exhale of a joint, Ocean is surrounded by ghostly incarnations of beautiful women, tigers and pandas. At one point, Ocean smears what appears to be novocaine — or Procaine, for those out there with dentist parents — on his solemn-looking face. The song is the first single from the Def Jam re-release of Ocean’s album. A track list for the re-release of the album has yet to appear, but the free version featured a variety of samples, from Coldplay’s “Strawberry Swing” to the Eagles’ “Hotel California,” which may be difficult to clear. When MTV News caught up with Ocean at the Coachella festival in April, even he joked that he was skeptical whether they’d be cleared. “The Eagles sample has no chance in hell of being cleared,” Ocean said. “Coldplay sample, possibly. I hear ‘possibly’ from people who say they know. MGMT, those guys seem chill. I heard they heard the record and they liked it a lot, so hopefully that can go some way. “Hopefully the sh– gets worked out. We might pull a Hail Mary and clear the Eagles’ record. They might want all of the publishing for the whole album, though, which can’t happen,” Ocean added. Related Artists Frank Ocean

Wiz Khalifa Plays Bamboozle Fest, Denies Feud With Kanye

‘It’s fun to talk about it and make jokes about, but in all reality, that didn’t even exist,’ Wiz tells us about alleged altercation. By Steven Roberts Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — Wiz Khalifa is riding high — pun not intended, even though it kind of works — off the success of his debut album, “Rolling Papers,” and a stage show that is quickly garnering a lot of praise. But Wiz can’t seem to escape the gossip that doggedly follows him and girlfriend Amber Rose around. Rumor has it that Wiz confronted Kanye West over a jab West took at Rose during his show-stealing set at Coachella . During his performance of “Stronger,” West slightly altered the lyrics from “I’ll do anything for a blonde dike and she’ll do anything for the limelight/ We’ll do anything when the time’s right” to “I did anything for a blonde dike and she did anything for the limelight/ And we did anything when the time’s right.” An altercation allegedly occurred after West’s performance, but when MTV News caught up with Wiz before his set at this weekend’s Bamboozle Festival, he said the entire backstage incident was fabricated. “I did my set and we hung around for a bit, but we weren’t even there when fam was onstage,” Wiz said. “Somebody made that up. I think they just wanted it to be that type of situation or they wanted to see something go down. It’s fun to talk about it and make jokes about, but in all reality, that didn’t even exist.” Wiz said he did hear Kanye’s lyrics though. He thought it was a low moment, that many people who look up to West may have been turned off by his lyrical alteration. He harbors no ill will, however. “It is what it is, and I’m doing my business and she’s doing her business and he’s doing his business and that’s what it is. I’m all about positivity and I’m going to keep it that way.” Wiz kept things moving, co-headlining Bamboozle Friday night along with 30 Seconds to Mars. Wiz is currently on the College Consciousness Tour with fellow Steel City native Mac Miller, and he plans to head out with the Motor City’s own Big Sean next month for the Rolling Papers tour . But he’s happy to perform wherever his fans — or soon-to-be-fans — may be. “I think my crowd, they kind of just go everywhere and wherever I’m at. I kind of just entertain them as well as make new fans. Some of the people that come to my shows, they just know me for one or two songs, so even the people that don’t know me at all at shows like Bamboozle, I get to make them new fans.” Related Videos Get Bamboozled In New Jersey Related Artists Wiz Khalifa Kanye West

Rej3ctz Dance To Their Own Drum In The New West

Cali trio who created the ‘cat daddy’ tell MTV News they’re more than just dancing MCs — they’re ‘renaissance artists.’ By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Steven Roberts Rej3ctz Photo: Getty Images MTV News’ New West Week coverage obviously entails focusing on the music coming out of the surging L.A. hip-hop scene, but the movement’s fashion and dance culture also deserves special attention too. That’s where Cali trio the Rej3ctz — Mowii (South Central), Pee Wee (Inglewood) and Bounce (Compton) — glide into the picture. The trio already have a fan in Chris Brown, who appeared in their video for “Cat Daddy,” also the name of their latest dance, which has been spreading like wildfire thanks to a viral video that has banked more than 21 million YouTube views. The Rej3ctz aren’t just dancers moonlighting as rappers though. They insist they have too many talents to limit themselves to just those titles. They’re also prominent members of Cali’s party scene. “We created something called ‘renaissance artist,’ ” Mowii told MTV News. “So for all those who like to tell people [no] and destroy their dreams. Nah, we are the renaissance artists. It means you have the art, the life, the style of fashion, to do what you want, no matter what anybody says. That’s why we’re renaissance artists. That’s why we’re directing, that’s why we’re choreographing, that’s why we’re making up our own dances, our own lane, our own style.” Dances have always been a part of hip-hop culture — from the running man to the Soulja Boy dance — and the Rej3ctz are embracing their dance-floor talents. In recent years, dances with accompanying songs have become hugely popular, including Cali Swag District’s “Teach Me How to Dougie” and the New Boyz ‘s “You’re a Jerk.” (Cali natives Audio Push also dropped “Teach Me How to Jerk.”) Besides the cat daddy dance and its accompanying song, off their TheFUNKtion vs theKICKback mixtape, the Rej3ctz also claim to have created all the fancy moves coming out of the West Coast like jerkin’ or whatever spastic motion kids in colorful gear are performing. “Currently, all the dances that came from the West, the Rej3ctz have made them up. Period,” Mowii said. “We were doing music and dancing at the time. And the New Boyz called us over and were like, ‘Yo, bro, we realized we was using your dance and we respect y’all enough to invite you all out, so please show some support,’ so I was like, ‘Ben J and Legacy, man, you got it.’ So, we hopped up that morning and went out to support their video.” For now, the Rej3ctz are continuing to spin their popularity into bigger opportunities. They’re set to be featured in the forthcoming Mario Van Peebles-directed film “We the Party.” The acclaimed director also helmed their video for “Cat Daddy 2.0,” which is based on the group’s audition for “We the Party.” No matter how busy their schedules get, the always dazzlingly dressed Rej3ctz plan on having a good time. “I think people are at a point where they’re like, ‘Let’s have fun,’ ” Mowii said. “Let’s have fun, let’s stop doing too much, man. There’s too many killings going on right now, too much violence around the world,” he added. “It’s too serious right now. People aren’t talking about something real. Let’s have fun … thank you.” Stick with us all week as MTV News turns the spotlight on the New West, including a special edition of “RapFix Live” with Cali’s own Tyga on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Nipsey Hussle Ready To ‘Bounce Back Harder’ With The Marathon

New West hustler leads Mixtape Daily through his latest tape. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Steven Roberts Nipsey Hussle Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily Main Pick Street King : Nipsey Hussle Holding It Down For : Los Angeles Mixtape : The Marathon Real Spit : Nipsey Hussle’s career has been more stop-and-go than L.A. traffic, but the rapper is far from discouraged. After building a sizable buzz that landed him a record deal with Epic, a shoe deal with Pony, co-signs from the Game and Snoop, and acting credits in flicks with Vivica A. Fox and Ving Rhames, Nipsey still hasn’t dropped his major-label debut, South Central State of Mind. No worries: The lanky hip-hop prospect is still delivering heat with his latest mixtape, The Marathon. ” The Marathon concept is just me stepping outside of the situation and assessing it,” Nipsey told Mixtape Daily. “A lot of times, you go through a situation where you didn’t get what you expected out of it, and it’ll get you down, but when it come to us, we done been through this a million times. We done had it, took losses and bounced back harder. And that’s part of the game: bouncing back off your loss, if you would even consider this a loss.” As MTV News continues its New West Week coverage, it’s only right that Nipsey’s name be affiliated with Cali’s rap resurgence. No matter what label Nip eventually chooses to hustle with — he recently left the Epic fold — bank on the “Feelin’ Myself” rapper to keep winning. Joints to Check For

Dom Kennedy Is Taking ‘A Stand’ On His Latest Mixtape

L.A. MC tells Mixtape Daily he wanted The Original Dom Kennedy to show ‘the way we grew up and our lifestyle.’ By Steven Roberts, with reporting by James Lacsina Dom Kennedy Photo: MTV News Main Pick Street Captain : Dom Kennedy Representing : Los Angeles Mixtape : The Original Dom Kennedy Real Spit : With the exception of Game and Snoop, it may seem like the West has remained quiet for the last few years, but if you agree with that sentiment, then you probably haven’t been paying close enough attention. L.A., in particular, has a gang of young, up-and-coming spitters primed to grab the mantle. Case in point, Leimert Park’s very own Dom Kennedy. Dom has been making noise on the underground for some time and now he’s packing shows in a city near you. The Cali MC recently dropped his latest mixtape, The Original Dom Kennedy, and he told Mixtape Daily that it reflects the sides of him that have been missing from his previous projects. “It was a part of me that wasn’t in all of those projects, and with The Original Dom Kennedy, it was a time for me to take a stand in music. The way we grew up and our lifestyle, being kids from the inner city of Los Angeles. I just felt like that was missing,” Dom said. Joints to Check For
