Despite nearly 26 years (!) on the air, The Simpsons has made more pop culture headlines in the past few months than all the other animated sitcoms combined. Earlier this summer, we learned that Lena Dunham will play Homer’s girlfriend when he and Marge breakup in the show’s upcoming 27th season. That was followed by zeitgeist-y moments such as Caitlyn Jenner getting The Simpsons treatment and the revelation that the show predicted a Donald Trump presidency . But while the beloved series has been maintaining its cultural relevance and inspiring tributes for years, nothing could prepare fans for Okilly Dokilly – the Phoenix-based metal band inspired by the life and legend of Springfield’s friendliest neighbor-ino, Ned Flanders. The band’s members – Head Ned, Red Ned, Thread Ned, Stead Ned, and Bled Ned – all rock Flanders’ signature green sweater, wire-rimmed glasses and push-broom mustache, but the Ned-cenrtic vibe doesn’t end there. ”Most of our songs are direct Ned quotes,” vocalist Head Ned claims. “[It’s] not as fast as Bartcore, and a little cleaner than Krusty Punk. Not as heavy as ‘Homer J.ent’—Nedal is a happy medium in the Simpscene.” Yes, there’s a “Simpscene” and the band describes it’s sound as “Nedal.” It’s more awesome than Ned’s man cave or lamer than a sermon from Reverend Lovejoy, depending on your perspective. So grab some Flanders-style nachos (cucumbers with cottage cheese) and head over Okilly Dokilly’s Facebook page to hear some dark, yet neighborly Nedal jams and decide for yourself.
Bob Burns, a founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, has died at 64. The drummer, who played on the band’s first two albums, was killed in a car crash. A Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman said Burns, who was not wearing a seat belt, was killed when his car left the road , striking a mailbox and a tree. He was alone in the car, and no other cars were involved in the fatal Friday crash. Police are trying to establish if weather was a factor in the accident. Burns performed alongside singer Ronnie Van Zant, bassist Larry Junstrom and guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins in Skynyd from 1966-74. Named after their childhood P.E. teacher, Leonard Skinner, the band recorded such songs as “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Simple Man” and “Free Bird.” Burns left the band after becoming exhausted by touring, and Artimus Pyle subsequently replaced him as drummer for 1975’s Nuthin’ Fancy album. He was not aboard the plane that crashed in 1977, killing three of the band’s members, including Van Zant, and disbanding the band until a decade later. The surviving members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006, at which point Burns rejoined the group for a one-off performance. “Well, today I’m at a loss for words, but I just remember Bob being a funny guy,” Rossington said in a message posted on the Lynyrd Skynyrd Facebook page. “He used to do skits for us and make us laugh all the time, he was hilarious!” “Ironically, since we played Jacksonville yesterday, Dale, my daughter and I, went by the cemetery to see some of the guys in the band and my parents’ grave sites.” “On the way back, we went by Bob Burns’ old house. It was there in the carport where we used to first start to practice with Skynyrd. My heart goes out to his family.” “God bless him and them in this sad time. He was a great, great drummer.” Celebrities We Lost in 2015 1. Stuart Scott View Photo ESPN’s Stuart Scott (1965-2015) will forever be missed. Like always, Cara Delevingne’s latest outfit is as weird, adventurous, and jaw dropping as ever. On Friday, Cara left the Rochon Photography Studio in Paris wearing an outfit covered in images from The Simpsons. Simpson, eh?
The Simpsons lived up to its promise tonight. After vowing all summer long to kill off a key character, the animated smash let go of Krusty’s father, Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky, on The Simpsons Season 26 Episode 1 . Voiced by the great Jackie Mason), the holy man had been a part of the show’s universe since reuniting with his estranged, red-nosed son in 1991. Why did producer Al Jean go there? “I thought it would be a good story about someone who’s had a tough relationship with his father – having Krusty’s father die without him ever getting that warmth or connection he really wanted, then finally finding it in a surprising way,” Jean telld TV Line. “If we could get a sweet moment out of that, that’s all we wanted. We didn’t want a crazy death, or anything shocking, just true human emotion.” Not exactly a series known for serialization, Jean also teased that the rabbi’s death will continue to be felt as episodes go along. “One of the reasons Krusty’s been such a loose cannon is because his father disapproved of him, and he never felt like he got that sort of love that he wanted,” Jean explains. “He might have a little more confidence now that he has that. … A little more. In case you were somehow concerned, however, have no fear: Jean promises his hit will never kill off Homer or Krusty. PHEW! Check out this collection of The Simpsons quotes at TV Fanatic and go watch The Simpsons online if you need to catch up. Then, sound off below with your favorite memories of Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky.
