Bad Movies We Love: Chastity

The original Movieline magazine ran a bunch of great features, but the most lamented one has to be Bad Movies We Love. The world never runs out of horrible, adorable films, and that’s because they’re the most gratifying to talk about. I haven’t discussed my favorite movie, Rear Window , as much as I have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze , and that’s because James Stewart and Grace Kelly never rapped with Vanilla Ice about crime-fighting humanoids (though you never know about Thelma Ritter). The point of it all: Thanks to the infinite, Biblical, pathetic joy that bad cinema produces, we’re exhuming Bad Movies We Love in weekly installments. Throw your vanities in a bonfire and join us!

Bosniawood Thwarts Angelina Jolie Once Again

“[The production director] said the original plan called for eight to 10 days of filming in Bosnia, but that has been cut to three or four. He said weather was one factor, but so were politics. ‘This story, “There is a paper [permit], there is no paper,” is a non-starter in the West. Nobody from the West is going to work with you when one day you tell them you can film, and then the next day you tell them now you can’t film. That is simply a no-go.” Sorry, Bosnia, all this could have been yours . [ LAT ]

An American in Paris: 9 Lessons From Moviegoing in the City of Light

Despite the fact that I do not speak French, I moved to Paris a little over two months ago to stay with my girlfriend while she earns a Master’s degree in the language. I started taking classes of my own last month, and remain nowhere near mastering it myself. In the meantime, my main refuge for the English language and American culture has been the movie theater. I’ve since learned that even going to the movies here requires some cultural adaptation. And so, in grand Movieline tradition , I present nine lessons learned thus far about seeing movies in the City of Light.

The A-List: New York Recap: Mad Vagenius

The A-List: New York treated us to a beatdown last night. I mean us , literally. We were beaten down. The A-List: New York ‘s dimwitted cast was Mike Tyson and our hard-earned intelligence was Michael Spinks. I’m spitting out teeth I thought I lost as an infant. Oh, and Rodiney got smacked around too, but his brain is still shaped correctly — the lucky bastard. Let’s pool our gelatinous, oblong neurons together and work to remember last night’s A-List .

Dear Hollywood: 5 Films in Development We Actually Want to See

Sometimes reading news about Hollywood’s development slate is almost as depressing as the front-page stories about the economy. Between a Ouija Board movie , McG’s 300 -style Christopher Columbus film and last week’s news ambush about a Flip-cam movie and a Rubiks Cube movie, it’s sometimes tempting to just stay inside and pray that The Walking Dead , 30 Rock and Boardwalk Empire keep up their quality. But don’t despair! Movieline has found five projects in development that sound potentially interesting if not downright fantastic. Check them out after the jump, and chime in with your own ideas for movies in development that Hollywood should get into theaters sooner rather than later.

Isabelle Huppert on White Material, Missing Chabrol, and the Joys of Law & Order: SVU

When Isabelle Huppert, arguably the world’s greatest screen actress, needs a minute to send a text message before your interview, you comply. Not necessarily out of deference or politeness (though those things, too), but because of the dazzling daydream potential. Is she sending script notes to Michael Haneke, planning their next collaboration? you may think. Who’s she arranging a lunch date with? I guess it can’t be Claude Chabrol… And on and on.

Who Scored Big in Week Six of SNL’s Not-Ready-for-Prime-Time-Player Relevancy Poll?

OK, I’ve calmed down a bit since yesterday’s scorecard . Yes, I still thought Saturday night was a train wreck (literally! Boom!) but I’ve almost been waiting for a show to come along that was so bad it would completely upend the relevancy poll. That show was this week. No more, “well, Jay Pharoah was good but he’s too underused to be number one.” Poppycock! Pharoah’s talent (and Taran Killam to a point) really shined this week when set against a backdrop that’s mostly made of sorrow. Welcome your new SNL Overlord, Jay Pharoah.
