Black Swan Ballerina Says Natalie Portman Basically Didn’t Dance

I was almost positive we’d never have to talk about awful-ass Black Swan again, but here comes a kick-ass, scorned ballerina with a tale to tell: Sarah Lane, a 27-year-old American Ballet Theater soloist who worked as a body double on Black Swan , tells EW that there’s a “cover-up” to prevent people from knowing she performed 95% of the cygnet moves in the movie. Now, I can’t guarantee that Sarah isn’t wearing black wings and circling her house right now like a crazed Sean Young type, but her quotes sound legitimate.

Stark Black Swan Posters Somehow Subtler (and Better) Than Actual Movie

Spoiler of the lowest order: Black Swan is chockablock with obvious swan imagery and a black/white motif that swallows the movie — even if the photography itself is swoon lake. (Laff.) But unless you’re hungry for psychodramatic, meth-level convulsions, you can actually glean the best parts of Black Swan through these new posters by design firm LaBoca. Check out their sanguine splendor after the jump.

Late Night Highlights: Joel McHale Attacks Innocent Conan Audience Member

Chaos broke out on the set of Conan last night when guest Joel McHale stopped ragging on Oprah and his Community co-star Chevy Chase to call out a young audience member’s wardrobe choice. But fear not — Conan, Andy Richter and second guest Tim Gunn heroically came to the audience member’s defense. Meanwhile, Stephen Colbert introduced a new product called meat goggles, Regis Philbin did card tricks and Conan vlogged about Bristol Palin from his bedroom.

REVIEW: Black Swan Takes Its Own Hifalutin’ Hokum Way Too Seriously

Darren Aronofsky’s ballerina-crackup drama Black Swan opens with a dream sequence in which a wispy-boned young woman twirls and flutters to the strains of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. She dabs at the stage with her dainty pink shoes, the stage lights shining through her all-too-translucent tutu. Suddenly, a figure appears from the darkness — why, it’s a handsome male dancer dressed all in black! He looks really nice, not scary at all, but wouldn’t you know it? Suddenly, he turns into a swaggering black swan, flapping his arms all masculine-like and threatening to take our little cygnet — who we now can see is Natalie Portman — doggy-style. What ever could this dream mean? One thing’s for sure: It ain’t about dancing poultry.

Vincent Cassel on Black Swan, Movie Overkill and the Politics of Selling Out

One good, sprawling interview with an international cinema star deserves another, and so we return to Vincent Cassel. When the French actor spoke to Movieline over the summer about his two-part gangster epic Mesrine , he also commented a bit about a little “independent movie” he was doing with director Darren Aronofsky. Mere months later, Black Swan has captivated critics, festival audiences and not just a few Oscar voters ahead of this weekend’s theatrical opening.

REVIEW: Vincent Cassel’s Gangster Saga Fizzles to an End in Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1

Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1 picks up not where its predecessor ( Mesrine: Killer Instinct , which opened last week ) left off, but rather where that film’s first scene left off: with the imminent demise of its title subject. In the opening scene we return to the Paris intersection where Jacques Mesrine (Vincent Cassel) was murdered in his car, and find the press feeding unchecked on his perforated corpse. It’s a mirroring that doesn’t bode well for those hoping that director Jean-François Richet might make the second half of his saga from scratch.

Black Swan’s Venice Debut: Is This The Psycho Ballerina Movie We’ve Been Waiting For?

On its face, Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan would seem to have something for everybody: lesbian kisses (for the masses), art house appeal (for the film snobs), and a supporting part for Winona Ryder (for Winona Ryder’s agent). So how is the film being received after its Venice Film Festival debut?

Vincent Cassel on Mesrine, Black Swan, and Acting: ‘You Need a Hard-On, Perpetually’

Don’t hate Vincent Cassel for having it all: If it wasn’t enough that he’s one of the biggest matinee idols in France, he’s also married to Monica Bellucci. It’s fitting then, that someone of his stature would play a criminal like Jacques Mesrine in the new filmic diptych Mesrine: Killer Instinct and Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1 — though the murderous Mesrine did a lot of bad things in 1970s France, he somehow became one of the country’s most popular celebrities. The charming and candid Cassel sat down with Movieline this month to discuss his interpretation of Mesrine, his own love of celebrity, and the pair of English-language films he has on the way: Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan , and David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method.
