The Rock Says ‘Pain And Gain’ Is ‘On The Right Track’

‘The goal would be to shoot this year,’ Dwayne Johnson tells MTV News of Michael Bay action flick. By Kara Warner Dwayne Johnson Photo: MTV News Although director Michael Bay has frequently mentioned that the next movie he will make is his passion project “Pain and Gain,” a smaller-budget action flick based on the real-life story about bodybuilders-turned-kidnappers in Miami, there has yet to be any official announcement regarding a production start date or the confirmation of rumored stars Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson . It now appears that that announcement is coming very soon as Johnson recently told MTV News that the movie is full steam ahead and that only a few minor technicalities need to be worked out, like Wahlberg’s schedule. “It’s going. We’re on the right train and the right track,” Johnson told us recently of the film’s production status during the press day for his upcoming film “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.” “Often in Hollywood, it’s the right train, wrong track. “It’s an awesome project, ‘Pain and Gain.’ It’s been with Michael Bay for several years now. I read it years ago; I loved it and wanted to do it then. He brought it back to me now,” Johnson said. “I hear Wahlberg is in talks and it looks like we’re going to do it. It’s a really, really cool story.” The “Fast Five” star went on to say that the film will be shooting this year in order to accommodate the busy schedules of Bay, Wahlberg and Johnson. “The goal would be to shoot it this year because [Bay] has ‘Transformers’ to make, obviously that’s a juggernaut. I can’t wait for that. Plus, I’ve got ‘Fast Six’ business, I’ve got to hunt Vin Diesel down and whoever else is on my list.” Given the fact that Wahlberg is still in talks and trying to work out his schedule, we asked Johnson if he’s thought about sending the “Contraband” star any special gifts in order to get the film solidified and officially greenlit. “No. Here’s my gift: It’s The Rock, that’s my gift. It’s me,” he said with a devilish grin. “All of this man and a half.” Are you excited for “Pain and Gain”? Leave your comment below. Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg Apologizes for 9/11 Remarks

‘I deeply apologize to the families of the victims.’ By Gil Kaufman Mark Wahlberg Photo: FilmMagic After a controversial interview in the February issue of Men’s Journal magazine went viral this week, “Contraband” star
 Mark Wahlberg
issued an apology on Wednesday for suggesting that he might have changed the course of history on the day of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. In the interview, Wahlberg — who was scheduled to be on the flight from Boston to Los Angeles that morning which ended up crashing into one of the World Trade Center towers — said that if he had been there things might have turned out differently. “If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did,” said Wahlberg, 40, who ended up taking a private charter plane earlier in the week and avoiding the flight that was overtaken by terrorists. “There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘OK, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry.'” Excerpts for the interview made their way online on Wednesday and TMZ reported that the Deena Burnett-Bailey, the widow of a 9/11 victim who was killed on United Airlines flight 93 when it crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania after terrorists tried to divert it to Washington, D.C., called the comments “disrespectful.” A short time later, Wahlberg issued his apology. “To speculate about such a situation is ridiculous to begin with, and to suggest I would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible,” said Wahlberg in a statement. Burnett-Bailey’s husband called her from the flight that was overtaken by four al Qeada terrorists and later crashed after several passengers tried to regain control of the aircraft. “I deeply apologize to the families of the victims that my answer came off as insensitive, it was certainly not my intention.” Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: Mark Wahlberg

Justin Bieber Debuts Darker Locks

Teen superstar was spotted with new hairstyle in Los Angeles over the weekend. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber (file) Photo: Getty Images About a year ago, Justin Bieber made headlines when he lopped off his famous locks in favor of a shorter do. Now, almost 12 months later, he’s once again making some hair-related headlines. So, what has Bieber done now that has everyone buzz ing? Well, over the weekend, the Biebs was spotted in Los Angeles donning much darker hair than his trademark sandy blond. When Bieber cut off his hair last year, MTV News spoke to his hairstylist, Vanessa Price , who told us about his new look, noting that it had a lot to do with Bieber’s growing pains. “We knew it was going to be a big deal,” Price explained. “We knew it was going to shock fans, but we also knew it was going to be a change in terms of growing up. I think that’s something that people adjust to. “We’d been talking about it for a while and shared some ideas, but literally the day of he was adamant about the haircut. He amped himself up for it,” Price continued, before describing his momentary hesitation. “The minute we started cutting, he was like, ‘Wait, wait, wait.’ He loves it. He’s enjoying it.” The new hair color coincides with his girlfriend Selena Gomez’s hairstyle changes. She recently tweeted a photo of herself sporting multi-colored highlights in her hair. Bieber’s new look may be part of a makeover for his upcoming album, Believe, slated for release later this year. He confirmed last week that Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am will appear on the album. Not only does Bieber want to grow up when it comes to his look but also when it comes to his music. “The only conversation we’ve had about Justin’s album that we’re about to do is it’s really important that it’s the proper transition, because we’ve seen him [with] ‘Baby,’ now we’re watching him grow up,” Bieber’s longtime vocal producer Kuk Harrell told MTV News in November. “And we can’t just throw him into the adult game right away. It has to be the proper transition.” Related Photos Justin Bieber’s Famous Former Hair Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez: A Look Back In Photos Related Artists Justin Bieber

‘Contraband’ Sweeps Weekend Box Office

Re-release of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ takes #2 spot over four-day weekend. By Ryan J. Downey Mark Wahlberg and Ben Foster in “Contraband” Photo: Universal Pictures This weekend, moviegoers decided that for Mark Wahlberg, nothing is forbidden. “Contraband” was the #1 movie in America with a solid $28.8 million debut over the four-day weekend, according to studio estimates. The action thriller, which takes places in the world of drug-smuggling, beat Disney’s 3-D re-release of 1991’s “Beauty and the Beast,” which opened to $23.5 million. Wahlberg’s latest (a remake of an Icelandic flick) kicked off with a stronger opening weekend than his multiple Oscar winner “The Fighter” or previous action flicks “Max Payne” (2008) and “Shooter” (2007). The film has a “rotten” 48 percent score on film review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences who saw it gave it an “A-” CinemaScore. “Beauty and the Beast” is off to a great start despite following last year’s $29.3 million debut of Disney’s 3-D re-release “The Lion King.” (“The Lion King” made more than $422 million its first time around, while “Beast” took in less than half that amount.) The re-release will be followed by 3-D versions of fellow Disney classics “Finding Nemo,” “Monsters Inc.” and “The Little Mermaid” over the next two years. The weekend’s other new wide release, “Joyful Noise” (starring Queen Latifah and country music legend Dolly Parton), opened in fourth place with a lackluster $13.8 million. But it was last weekend’s #1 movie that suffered the biggest disappointment: “The Devil Inside” earned just $9.2 million over the four-day weekend, down 72 percent from its debut. That’s an incredibly steep drop, even for a horror flick, no doubt due to the film’s 6 percent Tomatometer rating and unusually low CinemaScore of “F.” But thanks to its big opening, the low-budget indie’s $46.3 million total is still more than the entire runs of “The Rite,” “Devil” or “The Last Exorcism.” Box-office receipts were up 4 percent this holiday weekend compared to last year. Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” earned the #3 spot as it collected another $14.2 million for a total domestic gross of nearly $190 million. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” was #5 with $10.5 million for a domestic total of $172.1 million for the Robert Downey, Jr.-led sequel. This weekend’s new releases will include “Underworld Awakening”; Steven Soderbergh’s action flick “Haywire” starring Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor and MMA champion / first-time actress Gina Sirico; the George Lucas-produced WWII flick “Red Tails”; and the limited release of Mexican drama “Miss Bala,” among others. “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” which earned a Critics’ Choice Award for young star Thomas Horn, will expand into wider release. Jennifer Lopez ‘Chasing’ Role In ‘Cocaine Cowboys,’ Mark Wahlberg Confirms

Role of drug cartel ‘godmother’ Griselda Blanco is Oscar bait, actor tells ‘Sway in the Morning.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Devi Dev Mark Wahlberg Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Mark Wahlberg always has a lot on his plate, juggling projects as both an actor and producer. One film he’s been talking about for awhile now is “Cocaine Cowboys,” a feature film based on the 2006 documentary directed by Billy Corben. And when Wahlberg stopped by Sway Calloway’s “Sway in the Morning” Sirius radio show on Tuesday (January 10), he hinted at some major news. “We’re waiting on the script. It’s going to be sooner rather than later,” Wahlberg told Sway’s Shade 45 co-host, Devi Dev. “We’re going to shoot that in Miami, hopefully in the summer or the fall.” “Cocaine Cowboys” follows the rise of the cocaine trade and the subsequent crime epidemic and drug war that swept through Miami in the 1970s and ’80s. The documentary featured first-person interviews with journalists, lawyers, former smugglers and gang members, many of whom argue that the criminal operations behind the trade can be traced to one prominent figure: infamous crime family matriarch Griselda Blanco. Wahlberg, who has expressed interest in teaming up with his director buddy David O. Russell on the project, joked that Devi Dev might have a shot at playing “godmother” Griselda Blanco. But the actor/director also said the co-host would have stiff competition from a well-known actress who’s very interested in the part. “It’s one of those characters that will go down in history. Jennifer Lopez is chasing that [role] like crazy,” Wahlberg revealed. “It’s the role — if I could play Griselda, I would. That’s Academy Award [bait] right there.” Wahlberg and Devi also discussed the fact that whoever lands the Blanco role will have to forget about being pretty. Getting into character will require a transformation

Justin Bieber Has ‘It,’ Mark Wahlberg Says

‘I’m pretty intuitive,’ actor tells MTV News about why he wanted to work with the pop star on an upcoming basketball-themed drama. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Mark Wahlberg Photo: MTV News Mark Wahlberg surprised movie fans everywhere when he announced plans to hook up with Justin Bieber on the big screen. But when MTV News caught up with the “Contraband” star recently, he explained why he wanted to work with the teen phenom on the basketball-themed drama. “Intuition. I’m pretty intuitive,” he said of why he thinks shooting a film with the pop star is the right choice. “I see the guy and spent time with him, and you see what he does and how he does it, and then you actually have a conversation with him, and it’s there.” Of course, if it doesn’t come easily to the rookie actor, Wahlberg has a backup plan: “It’s there — and if not, I will extract it.” When MTV News caught up with Wahlberg and Bieber earlier this year at the MTV Movie Awards, they opened up a bit more about the in-the-works flick. “Wait till you see me and Bieber in the flick. Think of, like, ‘The Color of Money,’ ” Wahlberg said of his “old guy” role. “So I get this call from Paramount [with a story about] an old guy and a young guy. I’m like, ‘Cool, let’s get Jack [Nicholson]. Let’s get Robert De Niro. Let’s get Robert Duvall.’ And they go, ‘What about Garrett Hedlund?’ I’m like, ‘For what?’ ” he further recalled. “They’re like, ‘For the young guy.’ ” Bieber, who previously appeared on the big screen in his 3-D concert flick “Never Say Never,” said he hopes to be on a film set by sometime next summer. And while he kept his plans hush-hush, he added that his team is “working on the script.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Justin Bieber, Mark Wahlberg Open Up About Basketball Flick

‘It’s going to be crazy,’ Bieber promises at MTV Movie Awards. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News It seems that things are well under way for the basketball movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Justin Bieber . How do we know? Well, the guys themselves updated us this weekend at two of the biggest events of the summer. Wahlberg told MTV News on Saturday night at Spike’s Guys Choice Awards that while he thought he’d be playing Bieber’s part initially, he eventually came around to playing the “old guy” role. “Wait till you see me and Bieber in the flick. Think of like ‘The Color of Money,’ ” he teased. “So I get this call from Paramount [where they tell me about the story about] an old guy and a young guy. I’m like, ‘Cool, let’s get Jack [Nicholson]. Let’s get Robert De Niro. Let’s get Robert Duvall.’ And they go, ‘What about Garrett Hedlund?’ “I’m like, ‘For what?’ ” he further recalled. “They’re like, ‘For the young guy.’ ” (Check out photos of Justin Bieber and tons of other stars backstage at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards!) The next day, at the MTV Movie Awards, Justin Bieber seemed equally excited about the project, if not a bit tight-lipped. “I know ,” he promised. “You’ll have to see. I can’t really reveal too much about it.” According to previous reports, Wahlberg has been keeping tabs on the young star. “He loves the idea,” Wahlberg said last month. “He’s been sending me video, he sent me a video of himself, and, yeah, I think he’s really talented.” The idea was sparked after Wahlberg and partner Stephen Levinson caught Bieber playing basketball in February during a celebrity game held during NBA All-Star Game weekend .
