Some mornings I wake up and feel like I’m being pulled in lots of different directions. I am usually distracted by all sorts of things: miscellaneous emails, my cell phone ringing, 38 text messages, the dirty dishes in my sink and the unpaid gas and electric bill sitting in my face. And these are just things I remember being distracted by today! There may be days when you may be convinced that the world is conspiring to keep you from getting anything of substance done. Much of the time, the things that distract us are things that need to get done… but they aren’t necessarily what we should be focusing on right that second. What are some things that distract you from your goals and dreams? How do you keep your focus where it should be? Here are a few ways you can be sure you are on point. 1. Make a to-do list – Make sure you know what you should be doing, and try to plan out the order of priority for each thing to do. Even if it’s something as simple as taking out the garbage, it still needs to be taken care of. 2. Say a morning prayer or mantra – Take a moment to meditate and either pray or repeat your personal mantra to get the day started. It will get your gears grinding! “God of all times and places, you have brought us to the beginning of a new day. Surround us in the same with your all-embracing love, and grant that this day we turn not aside into sin, nor be overcome by adversity, but let our thoughts, words, and deeds, in some small way, make for the coming of your Kingdom on earth. Through Christ our Lord” – Morning Prayer 3. Don’t entertain fools and foolishness – If there are people who like to call you with catty gossip or vent to you about their latest weekend drama (we all have these friends, I know I do!) try to avoid them in the morning. Try not to listen to negative music, rants on the radio or anything sexual that may throw you off your focus by putting images in your mind that are not in tune with your daily goals. We’ve all been to the point where there’s a lot going on in our lives, but the key is to stay focused on what’s really important. Keep your eyes on the prize!
