Race Matters: New Poll Reveals That 1 In 4 Americans Think Blackface Is Acceptable

SMH Poll Shows 1 In 4 Americans Approve Of Blackface In the wake of the abundance of blackface Halloween costumes that invaded seemingly all of social media recently, a new poll has emerged proving that 1 in 4 Americans think blackface is acceptable. via The Grio surprising new poll from Huffington Post/YouGov, in the wake of several blackface Halloween controversies, has found that at least 4 in 10 Americans see no problem with darkening your skin for a costume. Despite widespread criticism directed at actress Julianne Hough and others, “43 percent of Americans think it’s acceptable for a white person to wear blackface in order to appear as a black person on Halloween, while only 37 percent think it’s unacceptable.” Their poll also found a slim majority approving of dressing as an “ethic stereotype.” There was a clear racial divide in the results. Whites were roughly split down the middle about whether blackface is appropriate for Halloween. Forty-six percent of whites said it was OK, while 43 percent said it isn’t. Can’t say we’re surprised at these results….are you? Continue reading

Hilton Botha, Oscar Pistorius Case Detective, Charged With Attempted Murder

The Oscar Pistorius case took a strange twist after it was revealed that Hilton Botha, the lead investigator, was charged with seven counts of attempted murder. Prosecutors said they didn’t know Botha faces seven charges of attempted murder in connection with the October 2011 shooting of a minibus in South Africa. Hilton Botha, a 24-year police veteran with 16 years as a detective, is slated to appear in court this May along with two other police officers in the incident. The bus shooting charges were initially dropped in the wake of the incident, but officials said the Director of Public Prosecutions had reinstated the charges. The country’s National Prosecuting Authority said the detective should be taken off the Oscar Pistorius case, but it’s a decision only police can make. The revelation came one day after Botha testified that authorities recovered two boxes of testosterone, along with needles, from Pistorius’ bedroom. This raised speculation that Pistorius was on steroids when he fatally shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last week at his home in Pretoria, South Africa. In the bail hearing, Botha testified that contrary to Pistorius’ claims, he knew Steenkamp “was in the bathroom, and he shot four shots through the door.” Pistorius has claimed that he thought she was an intruder when he fired and the whole thing was a tragic accident; police and prosecutors say otherwise. Botha and Pistorius actually crossed paths before in 2009, when the detective investigated accusations of assault against the Olympic track superstar. Pistorius won global acclaim as the first-ever double-amputee runner in Olympic competition last year, holding his own against able-bodied athletes.

Matt Lauer: On Vacation, In Trouble?

Where in the world is Matt Lauer? It’s a question The Today Show has asked for years, but the answer this week has created even more controversy around NBC. TMZ has learned that Lauer is on vacation with his family in Vail, a seemingly innocuous luxury, except for two facts: It is February Sweeps, the television period where ratings truly translate into advertising dollars. With Robin Roberts returning yesterday to Good Morning America , you would think Today would want its lead anchor in place to go up against such stiff competition. But NBC insiders say Lauer “took this exact same week off last year and the year before” because his kids are on school break “and other anchors have taken off in Sweeps months before.” We have no doubt that’s all true. Still, GMA is destroying Today in the ratings and we can see this trip simply increasing the abundance of Matt Lauer fired rumors.
