Jon M. Chu on Shirtless Bieber, Shawty Mane, and the Difficulties of Never Say Never

Having proved his facility bringing pop entertainment to a young, plugged-in audience with successes both theatrical ( Step Up 2 & 3 ) and digital ( The LXD ), 31-year-old director Jon M. Chu was in many ways the perfect choice to helm a biopic of YouTube sensation-turned-pop phenom Justin Bieber. The resulting film, Never Say Never , is a generation-defining concert doc filled with rare peeks into the life of the 16-year-old performer. It’s also got slo-mo hair tosses and shirtless scenes. Bieber Nation, prepare thyself.

Oscar-Nominated God of Love Director Luke Matheny Offers 4 Must-See Films for Valentine’s Day

It’s hard to remember, but there was a time when romantic comedies weren’t viewed with the same contempt as torture porn and Adam Sandler. This is a genre that saw the likes of Preston Struges, Billy Wilder and Woody Allen create some of the most iconic films Hollywood history; now it’s a genre overrun by Dennis Dugans and Robert Luketics, filmmakers seemingly content to stomp on whatever happy, “boy meets girl” memories you might have. If the Hollywood machine has got you down in this lead-up to Valentine’s Day, there is some hope: Resist buying a ticket for No Strings Attached (or, shiver, Just Go With It ) and search out Luke Matheny’s God of Love instead.

American Idol Hollywood Week: My Heart Barely Goes On

Confession! I forgot something about the first episode of Idol ‘s “Hollywood Week,” which in many ways is my favorite stretch of the season: You sometimes don’t see nearly enough singers, and for that you feel shafted. I know I do! Mathematician Ryan Seacrest claimed 168 people survived the first cut, but we only saw a meager sliver of that swath. Let’s slice up as many of the remaining candidates as possible and figure where our allegiances lie. (Spoiler: I hate some of them!)

First Look: Greta Gerwig Hits the Beach (and Bed) in SXSW Premiere Dish and the Spoon

The burgeoning Greta Gerwig Dynasty expands for the second time in as many days as Movieline offers your first look at the actress’s forthcoming SXW festival premiere The Dish and the Spoon. I think this is… what, the 15th? 16th? film Gerwig is set to appear in this year — or at least the fourth behind No Strings Attached , Arthur and Whit Stillman’s comeback Damsels in Distress . So what sets this one apart? It looks a little… intense , for starters. But in a good way!

Quickly, Let’s Name 50 Films That Can Never Be Remade and Save Their Souls

The dust has settled and it looks like they’re really going to remake Logan’s Run . With Ryan Gosling. Yep. You might remember that I mocked the original Logan’s Run the other day . I was positive we didn’t need to revisit it, actually! And yet, Logan Run ‘s bastardization is a minor loss compared to what could be. The occasion calls for a rally: Let’s name 50 movies that can’t be remade for the following reasons: 1) They’re perfect the way they are and belong in a time capsule; 2) they will seem grotesque in a 2011 update. Please add your own. Together, we can save some lives.
