Jamie Bell on The Eagle, American Imperialism, and The Adventures of Tintin

Channing Tatum may be the brawny face of this week’s Roman period adventure The Eagle , but British actor Jamie Bell is its scrappy, spirited conscience. As Esca, a Scottish slave guiding Tatum’s Roman centurion through hostile territory on a mission of honor, Bell flirts with an ominous ambiguity that easily makes him the most watchable performer on the screen. And when you’re sharing said screen with Donald Sutherland, Mark Strong, and Channing Tatum’s abs, that’s really saying something.

REVIEW: Channing Tatum Can’t Seem to Fly in The Eagle Despite Help from Jamie Bell

In period films, it always helps to have someone built to carry a sword, and Channing Tatum clearly hasn’t missed a workout for the past two years so he fits the bill in that regard. What he’s missing in The Eagle is that spark of the insane — the slightly lunatic fever that makes us unable to keep our eyes off him. Instead, he’s so distant, he looks slightly baked. It’s supposed to be a combination of the thousand-yard-stare and lost in a state of continual flashback that director Kevin Macdonald cuts to reveal Tatum’s “Inner Pain.” Instead, the star seems irritated that his buzz will burn off before a new batch of edibles arrives.

Oscar Index: Get Ready For the Upset of the Century!

As we race toward O-Day, Movieline’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics has worked tirelessly to parse the latest input, insight and insanity to arise in the build-up to the 83rd Academy Awards. It hasn’t always been pretty, but it’s as close to empirically accurate as you’re going to get without a peephole at PricewaterhouseCoopers. And this week we’ve been especially busy. To the Index!

Game: Match the ‘Big’ One-Word Theme to the Film of the Best Director Nominee

Looks like reduction is the name of the game today! Variety has just asked all five Best Director nominees to sum up their entire film with a one word theme. Well, all of the nominees except David Fincher, who, true to form , had his editors chime in instead. Anyway, just to get your brains fired up in the morning, take a shot at matching each one word theme to the films, which actually have quite a bit overlap… you know, when they are reduced to one word.

The Music Never Stopped Trailer: J.K. Simmons Wants You to Turn Down that Racket

Aw man, another movie about some guy who gets a brain tumor only to be nursed back to his former self through music by Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead? Okay fine, we have probably actually never seen this plot in a Sundance Dramedy, but by the end of the trailer for The Music Never Stops it’s pretty clear that this is just a backdrop for an father (J.K. Simmons) reconnecting with his estranged son (Lou Taylor Pucci), which might explain why it all feels so familiar.

VIDEO: Kid from Adorable Darth Vader Volkswagen Commercial Also Adorable

For the record, Movieline HQ was buzzing about the Darth Vader Volkswagen commercial days before it aired on the Super Bowl. OK, so was the rest of the Internet, but, still! It was easily the best ad of the night — sorry, Eminem and Timothy Hutton! — and had the Super Bowl party I attended coursing with delight after it aired. One surprising question did arise, however: Was that an actual child underneath the Darth Vader helmet, or a little person? As one friend theorized, the hand gestures and acting seemed too good to simply belong to a precocious six-year-old. Except for the fact that apparently they did.

Where Have We Seen Chris Evans’ Skinny Captain America Before?

Depending on your mileage for superhero origin stories, the trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger was either totally awesome (Red Skull!) or totally blah (Red Skull?), but no matter how strong your geek heart beats, one part of the slick, 30-second spot demanded universal attention: Chris Evans’ transformation from bulky real-life actor to wimpy fictional soldier to bulky fictional superhero. As has been echoed at Internet watercoolers all day: How’d they do that? Perhaps the answer lies ahead.
