Jennifer Lawrence’s Best Actress Oscar win is more than a career milestone. During awards season, Lawrence got dinged by people like me for speaking her mind and not being more politic during the campaigning process. She didn’t really listen, and, guess what, it didn’t really matter. Lawrence got her Oscar, and, for my mea culpa, I’d like to point out that her outspokenness had a lot to do with why she brought home a little gold man last night. Although Lawrence is nowhere near the loose cannon that, say, Alec Baldwin can be, she and the former 30 Rock star are really good at their jobs precisely because they’re rarely self-conscious about expressing themselves. As Baldwin once told me, his first thoughts when he gets up in the morning are not “about who I am in relation to the public and the media.” That certainly could serve as a synopsis of Lawrence’s approach to the Oscar-season interview slog, including last night. Check out this clip that the U.K. Telegraph posted of Lawrence answering questions backstage after her Best Actress win. Based on her reactions to some of the more ridiculous questions she was asked and the above photo of her flipping the bird with her Oscar, I suspect we can count on Lawrence being even more outspoken in the future — even if she hasn’t done a shot. You won’t hear me complaining. [ Telegraph ] Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .
Jacki Weaver says she has no Oscar game plan except to buy a new pair of shoes. “I love shoes. I love shiny things,” the Australian actress told Movieline this afternoon, after learning she had been nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her fine work in David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook . Weaver, who plays an Italian-American Philadelphia housewife so well that you can almost smell the braciole when she’s onscreen, explained that she learned of her nomination while watching TV “in my Qantas pajamas” after flying into Los Angeles en route to Texas for her next acting gig, as Lee Harvey Oswald’s mother, in David Landesman’s Parkland . “I wasn’t sleeping well so I turned on the TV. I honestly wasn’t expecting it, and it did take me quite by surprise,” Weaver said. “I yelled out a rude word.” That word began with “f, as in Freddie,” the actress said in her jammy Australian accent. “And it sounded like the way Australians say ‘park,'” she explained. “We drop the ‘r’ and say, ‘pahk.'” She went on to explain that said word is “a term of wonderment” in her country,” then laughed: I don’t know why I don’t just say the word.” She never did, but did tell us that she had not spoken to her fellow cast members and nominees, Robert De Niro , Bradley Cooper or Jennifer Lawrence , but had talked to Russell. “He told me that he’s really proud of me and he’s thrilled,” she said. “I adore David.” She likes Americans a lot, too. Weaver explained that “I haven’t changed but my life has changed,” in the two years she since earned her first Oscar nomination for the brutal 2010 Australian crime drama Animal Kingdom . “I’ve now done my fifth film in America and to be embraced so heartily by Americans has been wonderful. It’s a very generous culture, American culture,” she added. “I know you can’t generalize 300 million people, but everyone I’ve met her has been so lovely to me.” Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. The good people over at Entertainment Weekly have undertaken a scientific survey (as scientific as a movie blog can be, anyway) to find out, and for the raw data they have wisely turned to the expert…Mr. Skin! Using frequently nude Oscar darling Kate Winslet as the quin-tit-ssential example, EW cross-checked all the Best Actress Oscar winners from 1987 to 2011 with their records on MrSkin.com. So is going nude the key to gripping a little bald man in your sweaty palms (an Oscar , you pervs)? Yes and no. Only 9 out of the 25 winners went nude in the role they won for (like Halle Berry in Monster’s Ball (2001) and Holly Hunter in The Piano (1993)), but 21 out of the 22 actresses in the survey (some won multiple times- we’re looking at you, Meryl Streep ) had gone nude at some point in their career. Numbers don’t lie, ladies- if you want to win, you’ve got to show skin! Check out our Top 10 Nude Oscar Nominees for 2012 right here at MrSkin.com
Marcia Gay Harden has decided to end her marriage to Thaddaeus Scheel after 15 years. “For the sake of the couple’s three children, Harden would like to request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time,” her rep says in a statement. “No further comments will be made, and thank you for your understanding.” The actress and Scheel have 7-year-old twins and a 13-year-old daughter. Last night, during the 34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors telecast, Meryl Streep ‘s friends feted the honoree in grand fashion. There were video montages introduced, touching anecdotes told, funny memories recounted, musical numbers performed and splits done in her honor – by Robert De Niro, Mike Nichols, Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, Kevin Kline, Anne Hathaway and Tracy Ullman (who co-starred with Streep in Plenty ). It was an epic ode to the actress’s “superhuman” onscreen ability — one, that after ten minutes of increasingly heaping praise, began to feel like one of the most elaborate Oscar campaigns to date. With just two months until the 84th Academy Awards, last night’s Kennedy Center Honors Meryl Streep-fest aired at a perfect time. The actress has just scored her Golden Globe nomination for her highly-anticipated performance in The Iron Lady and is already being called an Oscar frontrunner for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in a project that seems designed entirely for a Lead Actress Oscar win. Take a look at the 10+ minute CBS campaign below.
Charlize Theron’s Best Actress Oscar win in 2003 was hardly unexpected. Roger Ebert had declared her performance as Aileen Wuornos in Monster “one of the greatest performances in the history of the cinema,” and she cleaned up at the Golden Globes and Independent Spirit Awards. But there’s no denying that Theron’s win followed in a certain Oscar tradition, and in this funny clip with MTV, Theron acknowledges it as such. Let’s compare notes with the Young Adult star and come up with our own recipes for Oscar victories in the big four acting categories.
Vibe is bringing back Vibe Vixen, and this time it’s a digital mag that features Lala Anthony on the cover. Lala talks about her VH1 reality show” La La’s Full Court Life,” her cousin Dice’s LGBT issues and reveals her addiction. The mag will be available online Sept 1st. Check out a peek of the interview below: On her feelings about “La La’s Full Court Life”: I think people seem to be excited about it which makes me excited. People are going to find the show very interesting. It documents when Melo was traded to New York which was the biggest thing ever and [shows] just exactly how a trade goes down. And you get to see me and my friends. Whether it’s Kelly Rowland, Serena Williams, Kim Kardashian, we’re all supporting each other and being there for each other. It’s a good balance on television to see successful women supporting each other, having a really strong bond and great friendship. I think it’s necessary for people to see that too on television. On the topic of LGBT sexuality: My cousin Dice is a big part of my reality show and what’s important to me about Dice besides, obviously, that being my cousin and one of my best friends, is Dice is dealing with sexuality issues and different things like that. I think it’s important to see things like that on television because you have a lot of people struggling with who they are and trying to find themselves and worrying about if people aren’t going to accept them, and it’s good that we touch on these issues on the show. I think that can help a lot of people. On what she learned from Megan Good during Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man : What I’ve learned just from watching Megan Good is that acting should be effortless. I watch her and she makes it seem so effortless and so easy that it makes my job easier because I’m feeding off of her energy. One thing you may not know about her: I love chocolate. I am insanely addicted to Nestle Crunch… and I’m working on it. [Laughs] GET THE REST AT VIBEVIXEN.COM Highlights From Last Night’s Episode Of “Lala’s Full Court Life” [RECAP] Is Lala Pregnant Again?
