Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress Stays Fresh At Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

It’s ‘definitely one of the stranger pieces’ on display, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame curator Jim Henke tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images Oh, that meat dress ! Nearly a year after Lady Gaga wore it at the MTV Video Music Awards, the costume made of various cuts of meat that designer Franc Fernandez and stylist Nicola Formichetti put together is still making headlines. On Thursday (June 16), that dress will join the “Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power” exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, where it will sit on display along with Gaga’s childhood piano and Armani Prive orbit gown , which she wore to the 2011 Grammys, until February 2012. “I was talking to Lady Gaga’s managers, and this is probably around November [of last year], and basically talked about different things, and we talked about the meat dress and we thought it would be great to add it to the exhibit just because of all the notoriety it has, so that’s basically how it came about,” RRHOF chief curator Jim Henke told MTV News. “We thought the meat dress would really be cool.” So, how will the folks at the Rock Hall keep it fresh until it wraps up its stint there? “It’s going to be in a case and we are putting some canisters in there to control the humidity, and then we have this other canister that soaks up the glutens,” he explained. “But it’s in a sealed case and we have the gels to control the environment in there.” However, it took some work to get it to the point where it can hang around the Rock Hall along with a number of other high-profile memorabilia without seeming super-gross. Henke explained, “We went back to Franc Fernandez … ultimately what we decided to do, we sent it to a taxidermist, they put it into a meat locker and then we started working on it and created this [chemical] solution and treated it with that. “And then they had a body form, and when it was still wet, they put it on the body form and then it dried on there,” he continued. “And then they had to do a little bit of painting to bring it back and give it a little bit more color.” Gaga hasn’t been shy about making the dress into jerky or wanting to have her extensive wardrobe in a museum, as she shared on “The Graham Norton Show.” “I keep everything and dream of having a museum of all my clothes. I have an archive house for all my clothes,” she said. “[The dress has] been jerked. It stank. It was fabulous. I never want to talk to anyone at those big celebrity functions because I feel awkward, and it was great — because it stunk, I didn’t have to talk to anyone.” Having the dress in the exhibit is quite an honor and it’s an interesting piece, but Henke notes this isn’t the most bizarre exhibit at the RRHOF. “Definitely one of the stranger pieces,” he laughed about the dress, adding, “There are some other weird things. We actually have [pioneering radio DJ] Alan Freed’s ashes.” Related Photos If Gaga’s Meat Dress Started A Celebrity Trend Related Artists Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress Tops Time’s ‘Fashion Statement’ List

Singer’s infamous VMA getup was named Biggest Fashion Statement of 2010. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ Getty Images It was celebrated , criticized , copied and ultimately turned into jerky , and now, Lady Gaga’s infamous VMA meat dress is being honored, by Time magazine, of all places. Yes, her carnivorous couture was singled out as Time ‘s #1 Fashion Statement of 2010, lauded for its general insanity, creativity and ability to stand a cut above every other gown worn by celebrities this year. “If making fashion statements is your primary raison d’

Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress Follows Other Flesh Fashion And Art

‘It is beautiful and grotesque at the same time,’ one artist tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Lady Gaga had everyone talking Sunday when she accepted her award for Video of the Year in a Franc Fernandez-designed meat dress . While the daring design still has people abuzz nearly a week later, those who work in the world of art and fashion are quick to point out Gaga is certainly not the first person to use flesh to make a point. “It was quite a dress! The first thing I thought of — [because] a lot of what I do is an overlap of art and fashion — is I thought of [artist] Jana Sterbak. She, years and years ago, made a dress out of meat, and I think her dress was called ‘Dress for an Albino Anorectic,’ ” said Nancy Deihl, coordinator for the M.A. program in costume studies at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture. “Her dress still exists, and it’s all dried out [and] it’s already this kind of icon of meat fashion. It wasn’t fashion, it was an art piece, [but] I thought, ‘What a copycat!’ Because this thing is so well-known and everyone talks about this artist.” Diehl was also reminded of an equally out-of-this-world fashion plate. “My second thought is: She looks like Cher,” Diehl said of the pop icon, who happened to present Gaga with her award Sunday night. “I think she’s the new Cher, who just kept pushing it. … I really feel like it’s almost a raw version of one of Cher’s leather outfits. It’s obviously all about shock value.” Artist Mark Ryden, who has also used similar visuals in his own art, said he thinks the use of meat is just part of pop culture’s current zeitgeist. “Many people forget that meat was once part of a living creature. They can see it as simply a product you buy in a clean package at the grocery store. Seeing meat in the context of a dress is a bold reminder of what meat is and perhaps instill awareness of where the meat comes from. That awareness would hopefully be followed by respect and reverence and then would perhaps lead to the better treatment of the animals we use for food,” he said, referring to his own painting, “Incarnation.” “However, many of these things are simply in the air. There is a zeitgeist that drives these things to permeate our culture.” In “Incarnation,” his muse also wears a dress made of meat. “For me, it is about how we are all wearing ‘meat’ all the time. It is the physical substance that keeps our souls in this reality.” As for the Fernandez design, he praised it for its multilayered meaning. “It is beautiful and grotesque at the same time,” he said. “I believe this combination is why it is so engaging and has captured such attention.” In fact, as two judges from “America’s Next Top Model” were quick to point out, their show used meat as fashion years ago. “We already did that in cycle 10 of ‘America’s Next Top Model.’ Sorry, Gaga!” Jay Manuel told MTV News. “You know I love you. You know that you’re the true supreme artiste, but we did do a photo shoot with the girls.” What did you think of Gaga’s meat dress? Share your thoughts in the comments! Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress: Celebs Weigh In

‘She’s a courageous chick,’ Mary J. Blige said at New York fashion event. By Amy Wilkinson Lady Gaga on stage at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Tongues are still wagging over Lady Gaga’s BBQ-defying meat dress from Sunday’s Video Music Awards , and it seems everyone has an opinion on the flesh frock. So who better to weigh in on Lady Gaga’s look than the honorees at US Weekly ‘s 25 Most Stylish New Yorkers event in New York City? While many stars lauded the “Bad Romance” singer for her sartorial bravery, most added that they’d never actually don such a rare outfit. “I thought: courageous,” host Mary J. Blige said with a laugh when asked her opinion of Lady Gaga’s meat dress. “She’s a courageous chick.” Actress and frequent “Glee” guest star Kristin Chenoweth couldn’t have agreed more. “I thought it was incredible,” she said. “Actually it was an incredible design. I wouldn’t be caught dead in it, but go girl!” One lucky celeb got to see — and smell — Franc Fernandez’s design up close and personal. “I was sitting right behind her [at the VMAs],” record producer Sean Garrett said. “That’s probably the best-smelling meat [I’ve ever smelled].” One person not coveting Garrett’s prime seat was talk-show host Wendy Williams. “I wouldn’t have been the one wanting to sit next to her,” she said. “With the hot lights and the hot skin, she was actually sizzling right there, and I understand she has a line of perfume coming out, and that would smell like A1 Sauce.” Though most celebrities found Gaga’s get-up humorous, “The City” star and People’s Revolution owner Kelly Cutrone was introspective, saying she found the frock frivolous in light of global hunger issues. “I personally think it’s not a good idea when people are starving in the world,” she said about food as fashion. “One person’s dress is another person’s dinner.” What do you think about Lady Gaga’s meat dress? The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.
