Study Shows Blacks Are More Likely To Take On Student Loan Debt And Default Than Whites

Blacks Are More Likely To Take On Student Loan Debt Than Whites U.S. congressman Elijah Cummings and Sen. Elizabeth Warren recently joined forces to discuss the issues with student loan debt in this country and break down the racial barriers when it comes to who is falling victim to the debt boom… Via The National Journal : Today the majority of all college students—at two-year and four-year, private and public institutions—rely on grants and loans to pay tuition. Americans now hold about $1.2 trillion in student debt, and right now most borrowers aren’t paying off their debts at all. Cummings and Warren are particularly concerned about the effect student debt has on African-American borrowers. “African-American students are more likely to take on debt—and more debt—than white, Latino, and Asian-American students,” Cummings said at the event. In 2013, 42 percent of African-American families had student loans, compared to 28 percent of white families, according to the Urban Institute, a Washington, D.C. think tank. That racial gap is driven by an enormous wealth disparity, Cummings said. The average African-American household has a total net worth of $11,000, according a Pew Research Center analysis. That’s not enough to pay for even a single semester at Howard, and it’s barely enough to cover a year of tuition at a public university like the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. In contrast, the average white family has a net worth of $141,900. The startling discrepancy in household wealth means that a white family and a black family can have the same income but a radically different financial situation. It’s a disparity rooted in history, as The Atlantic’s Ta-Nehisi Coates has explained, and it means that the average black family today essentially lives without a financial safety net. Student loans can be a lifeline, helping students finance college degrees even as tuition prices rise. Tyrone Hankerson, a current Howard senior, told forum attendees that he’s financing his education through a combination of scholarships, work-study aid, and a loan his parents took out on his behalf. After he graduates, he plans on going to law school. But loan payments can become a heavy burden. One Howard graduate, Latechia Mitchell, said that her undergraduate degree was largely financed by scholarships, but she took out $60,000 for graduate school and to get a teacher certification. Although she and her husband both have college degrees and professional jobs, they can afford to pay only the interest on their cumulative student debt. Discuss…

About Time: Salty Sore Loser GOP Houseboy Allen West Finally Concedes Florida Congressional Election

Another Teabagger bites the dust! Via CBS News : Allen West Concedes In Florida The third time’s a charm. Patrick Murphy has declared victory twice already in his race against Rep. Allen West for Florida’s 18th district. But this time, a declaration of victory means a bit more. After two weeks of challenging the election results in one of South Florida’s congressional district, Republican Rep. Allen West is throwing in the towel. Early Tuesday morning, the Tea Party favorite conceded that he does not have enough votes to beat Murphy. “[W]e will not contest the certification or challenge the seating of Congressman-Elect Murphy,” West said in a statement according to The Palm Beach Post. Murphy remained ahead of West by 0.58 percent, which is more than the 0.5 percent margin required by Florida law to require a full recount. West has called for partial recounts and challenged the accuracy of the St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections, but after a judge denied his latest request for a recount of all early votes and legal challenges failed to prove an alternate outcome, West conceded. He continued, however, to raise questions about the process. “While there are certainly still inaccuracies in the results and the actions of the St. Lucie County and Palm Beach County Supervisors of Elections rightly raise questions in my mind and for many voters, after much analysis and (Sunday’s) recount in St. Lucie County, our legal team does not believe there are enough over-counted, under-counted or fraudulent votes to change the outcome of the election,” West said in a statement. Despite West’s challenges, the 29-year-old Murphy was in Washington last week with the rest of the newly-elected members of the U.S. House for orientation. Womp! Womp! We have a feeling we ain’t done hearing about Mr.West though. SMH!

No Rooney Pooney for Indian, Japanese Dragon Tattoo Fans

We’ve got no love lost for the MPAA here at Skin Central, but at least they let us see some furburger (or a merkin, as the case may be) every once in a while. Let’s not beat around the bush (heh): the Japanese have a pube problem. The country has long been saddled with a self-imposed ban on pubic hair , and bush is usually blurred out in both mainstream films and porno. Yes, even porno. No, we don’t know how they survive. So it’s no surprise that Rooney Mara’s full-frontal scenes in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) ruffled the Japanese censors (the fact that Rooney was actually wearing a merkin didn’t help). In the end, they allowed the film to debut in Japan with its provocative skin scenes intact but with, as The Hollywood Reporter puts it, ” some mosaic-blurring of the kind that graces even pornographic films in Japan. ” Still, that’s better than the plight of Indian move-goers, who won’t be able to see The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo at all in their home country. The Indian Central Board of Film Certification rejected the film outright after director David Fincher refused to cut three nude scenes that are central to the plot, canceling its scheduled February 10 debut in India. See what all the fuss is about with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo right here at MrSkin.com!

Rumble In The Lumberyard: FSC Wins This Round

For the last four years, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has been fighting off the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and other certification programs in their attempts to have their programs recognized by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and get that single LEED point for sustainably harvested lumber. The proposed changes that would have opened up the certification were put to a vote and the results are in: The status quo remains.
