Great Moments In ‘Les Miserables’ Mania: Katie Holmes Sings ‘On My Own’ On ‘Dawson’s Creek’

With this season’s Les Misérables mania in swing, many a moviegoer has been obsessing over those familiar songs and weepy French revolutionary dramatics in anticipation of the Christmas Oscar pic. I’ve been thinking a lot about the classic Les Mis tune “On My Own,” about one girl’s unrequited love for a boy who loves another — but not as sung by Eponine about Marius and his beloved little songbird Cosette. I’m talking Joey Potter’s Miss Windjammer rendition from season one of Dawson’s Creek . If you were a teenage girl growing up in the late ’90s, chances are you watched the seminal WB series. And if you had any sense at all, you identified not with wannabe Spielberg Dawson Leery (James Van Der Beek), adorably feckless Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson), or the hot-but-troubled new girl in town Jen Lindley ( Michelle Williams ), but with the tomboyish girl-next-door, Joey Potter ( Katie Holmes ). So when Joey reluctantly entered the local Miss Windjammer beauty contest (for college tuition money!) and warbled the Les Miserables ballad “On My Own” — prompting stupid Dawson to see past Jen and notice Joey for the first time ever — you LOVED EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF IT. Joey was the Eponine of Capeside, Massachusetts, and Dawson was her Marius, and this Eponine was finally getting her man. I’ll admit with no small shred of embarrassment: I’ve probably seen Joey sing “On My Own” dozens of times in my life. As soon the Internet invented YouTube, I found it and watched it again. (There was that one lost evening when I fell down a k-hole of Joey-Pacey YouTube videos, but that’s another story.) I’d never seen Les Miserables onstage, so Dawson’s Creek marked my introduction to the soulful, wistful “On My Own” — and in the hazy euphoria of nostalgia, despite Dawson’s terrible ’90s mane and Joey’s reedy baby voice, I still think back on it fondly. Clearly Holmes doesn’t hold a candle to a performer like Samantha Barks, the professional West End veteran who plays Eponine and absolutely slays “On My Own” in Tom Hooper’s film adaptation. But the reason why both versions work — Barks as Eponine in the familiar Les Mis tradition, and Holmes as Joey singing to Capeside’s finest — is that they both hit that Some Kind of Wonderful sweet spot. Les Mis the musical was written over a decade before Dawson’s Creek and the John Hughes gem, and Victor Hugo’s novel 130 years before, but they share the same essential DNA: The overlooked girl-next-door pining for the boy who’s too blind to see, who loves him so much she’ll help him woo the girl of his dreams — even if it kills her. This is, incidentally, why Some Kind Of Wonderful is so great; Watts gets her happy ending . And a pair of diamond earrings. Kate Middleton’s Christmas Wish: A BABY!!

The “is Kate Middleton pregnant” rumor mill continues to be set ablaze this month, with a new report saying she hopes to make THE ANNOUNCEMENT around Christmas! According to Us Weekly , a source close to the royal couple says, “They’re excited at the prospect of becoming parents,” and confirms they’re “working on it.” Not sure what this celebrity gossip mole means by that. Next time draw us a picture! “In a dream situation, they would love to be a step closer at Christmas,” the source adds. “They have been on such a high since getting married.” Basically, Prince William has been seeing plenty of Kate Middleton topless and bottomless , and hopes the fruits of his labor will mean an heir in 2013. And heir and a spare down the line, if they have their way and nature cooperates. Just like Will, Kate wants two children, according to a longtime friend of hers, and their home in Kensington is undergoing a seven-figure renovation. Hmm! Whether it’s a boy or a girl, he/she will be the heir(ess) to the throne behind Princes Charles and William, thanks to the recent change in succession rules. The alleged insider then adds that if in fact she is pregnant, she will not make an announcement until after her first trimester … well after Christmas. Unless she’s already 7-8 weeks along and her baby bump is on the verge of showing. In any case, let the speculation and over-analysis of Kate Middleton photos continue!

Osama Bin Laden Death: Fresh Details Emerge

Close to 19 months after the Osama Bin Laden death photo that rocked the world, new details have emerged regarding this terrorist’s burial at sea. Under the Freedom of Information Act, The Associated Press obtained numerous emails yesterday that – though heavily blacked out – indicated no sailors watched the water-based ceremony from the USS Carl Vinson and Islamic procedures were followed throughout. Bin Laden, of course, was gunned down on May 1, 2011, by a Navy SEAL team at his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. According to one message from the aforementioned ship’s public affairs officer, only a few crew members were informed of the burial. “Traditional procedures for Islamic burial was followed,” the May 2nd email from Rear Adm. Charles Gaouette said. “The deceased’s body was washed (ablution) then placed in a white sheet. The body was placed in a weighted bag. A military officer read prepared religious remarks, which were translated into Arabic by a native speaker. After the words were complete, the body was placed on a prepared flat board, tipped up, whereupon the deceased’s body slid into the sea.” It’s also interesting to note how those in the know referred to bin Laden’s corpse as the “package” over emails. For security purposes, of course. The Associated Press also asked for photographs of videos taken during the raid that killed this evil leader, but the Defense Department has said nothing of that sort can be located.

Kris Jenner Laughs Off Divorce Rumors

Sorry, single men over 50: Kris Jenner won’t be on the market any time soon. The mother of Kim Kardashian and kompany appeared yesterday on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and responded to Bruce Jenner divorce rumors, laughing off the chatter that’s recently been heating up the Internet. Kris Jenner on The Tonight Show “That is the most ridiculous…we’ve been married almost 22 years,” Kris said. “We fight all the time. Everybody fights after 21 years, but he kind of stays away, gets to the golf course and tries to stay out of my way.” As for the annual Kardashian Christmas card and whether it will include Kanye West? “You’re just gonna have to wait” and see, Jenner teased. Spoken like a true Mom-ager.

High And Low: Early Fritz Lang, Late John Carpenter

This week’s new DVD releases  make it easy to put a little Highbrow dark chocolate in your Lowbrow crunchy peanut butter and enjoy a satisfying double feature . Whether you’re in the mood for serious German cinema (that mixes in some genre tropes) or ass-kicking science fiction (flavored with pungent political satire), there’s plenty for all tastes this week. HIGH: Fritz Lang: The Early Works (Kino Classics; $39.95 DVD) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: This trio of early works by legendary German director Fritz Lang includes an adaptation of the classic opera Madame Butterfly and two films Lang co-wrote with his then-wife Thea von Harbou  that feature actor Rudolf Klein-Rogge — two key collaborators on Lang’s masterpiece, Metropolis . WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: 1919’s Harakiri , the Madame Butterfly adaptation, tells the story of a Japanese girl and her doomed romance with a European officer who abandons her.  The Wandering Shadow (1920), Lang and von Harbou’s first collaboration, follows a woman fleeing from a sex scandal and her eventual shot at redemption. Four Around the Woman , from 1921, sees a socialite falling victim to a crime…or is she involved in a blackmail plot? WHY IT’S SCHMANCY: Before he fled Nazi Germany, before M and Metropolis , even before Spies and the Dr. Mabuse movies, Fritz Lang was a successful filmmaker in Weimar-era Germany, when Expressionism was the happening thing. For scholars who wanted to explore the master’s entire oeuvre, however, many of Lang’s earliest films were difficult to access. Harakiri was one of four films Lang made in 1919, his first year as a director. And yes, the film has German actors performing in yellowface, but at least the filmmakers bothered to get genuine Japanese costumes and artifacts from the Hamburg Anthropological Museum. This DVD features restorations mastered from 35mm elements. WHY YOU SHOULD BUY IT:  Fritz Lang: The Early Works should appeal to more than just Lang completists. Anyone who cares about the roots of movies or just wants to check out silent cinema at its most vibrant should pick up this collection. LOW: They Live (Collector’s Edition) (Scream Factory; $19.93 DVD, $29.93 Blu-Ray) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: Written (under the pseudonym “Frank Armitage”) and directed by John Carpenter; starring “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Keith David, Meg Foster. WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: A homeless drifter (Piper) finds a stash of special sunglasses that allow him to see the truth about the world around him: the rich and powerful are actually aliens who are destroying the planet and manipulating humans with subliminal messages in the media that induce people to consume mindlessly and to conform. WHY IT’S FUN: Released in 1988, Ronald Reagan’s last year in office, They Live is one of the most stinging satires of the Gipper’s era. Carpenter basically implied that yuppie-ism and the rest of the decade’s excesses were the product of cultural manipulation. (Okay, so extraterrestrials were behind the whole thing, but it’s an intriguing idea.) And if you’re not in the mood to look for political perspective, there are gross aliens and crazy shoot-outs and a fight scene between Piper and David that goes on…and on…and on…into cinema legend. WHY YOU SHOULD BUY IT (AGAIN): This new Collector’s Edition features great new goodies, including interviews with Foster (who’s still got Those Eyes), David and Carpenter, plus previously unseen footage from the original TV spots for the movie and a featurette on the visual style, scoring and stunts. (There’s also a Carpenter-Piper commentary track that’s been previously available.) Alonso Duralde has written about film for The Wrap, Salon and MSNBC.com. He also co-hosts the Linoleum Knife podcast and regularly appears on What the Flick?! (The Young Turks Network) .  He is a senior programmer for the Outfest Film Festival in Los Angeles and a pre-screener for the Sundance Film Festival.
