Doctor Opens First Black Woman-Owned Veterinary Clinic In Cleveland

Excerpt from:

B lack women are making historic moves in the realm of entrepreneurship. According to Atlanta Black Star , Dr. Venaya Jones recently opened the first veterinary clinic in Cleveland to be owned and operated by an African American woman. The facility offers a wide spectrum of services including diagnostic exams, dermatology, wellness visits, and hospice care. Dr. Jones—who discovered her passion for helping animals at a young age—says she wants to utilize the Cleveland Veterinary Clinic as an avenue to push animal health care forward and establish the clinic as a go-to veterinary facility in Cleveland. “I feel like it’s a great opportunity here in Cleveland, especially there being no other vet hospitals here,” she said in a statement. “There are tons of people with pets, we’re in the health tech corridor. I mean, this is where quality medicine is discovered and done, and I want to be a part of that.” For the Western University College of Veterinary Medicine graduate, opening up the Cleveland Veterinary Clinic was about more than her passion for animal health care; its about representation. Dr. Jones hopes her journey will inspire Black youth to pursue careers in veterinary medicine. She mentors youth and other women of color who are interested in stepping into the field. “I’m hoping to uplift the community both physically and emotionally, health wise by taking care of their pets, but … also bringing a sense of pride and a sense of accomplishment,” she said. “I want to be able to show other [young minorities] that they can do it, anything that they dream of, because here is a Black woman that’s come into this community and made it happen.” Black entrepreneurs are breaking barriers in the medical field. Earlier this year a group of African American medical professionals joined forces to open up Chicago’s only Black-owned urgent care facility . Atlanta Raises $50 Million To Provide Housing For The City’s Homeless Population

Keisha Lance Bottoms , the mayor of Atlanta, just announced that the city reached its goal of raising a whopping $50 million to provide housing for the homeless. Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news. ( Terms and conditions ). According to reports from  Blavity , Atlanta partnered with the United Way of Greater Atlanta to raise the funds. About half of the money came from donations from private organizations, which includes Ameris Bank, who donated the last $114,000 that allowed the city to reach its goal. The other half is from the Homeless Opportunity Bond sale that began under former Mayor Kasim Reed. At the moment, there are over 3,000 homeless people in the city of Atlanta and the money raised will provide 550 homes for the city’s homeless population. “It is a misperception that many people have — that homelessness is represented entirely by the people they see on the streets,” said Jack Hardin, co-chair of the Atlanta Regional Commission on Homelessness. “A far larger proportion of people experiencing homelessness have incomes and function at very high levels, but live on the margins of the economics of our society and any hardship can derail.” This very funding to help curb homelessness in Atlanta was a major priority for former Mayor Kasim Reed’s last year in office. The initiative was initially announced about two years ago, when the city’s largest homeless shelter, Peachtree-Pine, revealed that it was closing its doors. It was unanimously approved by the city council Bottoms was apart of before becoming mayor. “We now have the opportunity to end chronic homelessness in our city, and ensure that all women, men and children – regardless of circumstance – have the chance to live stable, meaningful lives and participate fully in their communities,” Reed said in a written statement at the time the plan was approved. Congrats to Mayor Keisha and everyone else involved on such a major accomplishment for the city of Atlanta.   [ione_media_gallery src=”https://rickeysmileymorningshow.com” id=”1958596″ overlay=”true”]   Follow @TheRSMS This story was originally posted on Bossip.com

This Is Us Recap: Toby’s Got a Secret. Did He Keep It?

Kate and Toby were at the center of This Is Us Season 4 Episode 2. And so was their son, Jack, which is where the problems between the couple arose. We’ll start with this: A clearly thinner Toby simply could not hide his anxiety over the baby boy’s diagnosis of blindness on this installment of the NBC drama. The family remarked on Toby’s weight loss, which he attributed to stress and stress only. Kate, for her part, appeared to be holding things together and also appeared to be unshaken by any new developments. The husband and wife did get plenty support from Kevin, Rebecca, Miguel and Madison as they navigated the ins and outs of parenting a child who cannot see. Kate eventually lost it when she thought about Jack never getting to see a Pittsburgh Steelers game — and she wondered whether his condition was her fault because doctors warned her not to get pregnant. However, she regained her inner strength once she decided that he would live a limitless life… with the Pearsons’ assistance. She was still struggling, though. Could anyone blame her? Toby noted that Kate was overeating to cope and that he was worried about her, while he was secretly sneaking to the gym to work out and slim down. Elsewhere… Kevin also attempted to remain busy to maintain his sobriety. He helped Kate and Toby… went to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings… wrapped a new film with M. Night Shyamalan … and considered a job offer in Chicago. However, he could not stop thinking about Nicky (Griffin Dunne), who totally ghosted him after Kevin wired him bail money. Instead of heading to Illinois to take a meeting about a new movie, Kevin traveled to Nicky’s trailer to figure out what was up with him. Watch This Is Us Season 4 Episode 2 Online Nearby, Randall, Beth and the girls settled into life in Pittsburgh. Tess (Eris Baker) and Deja (Lyric Ross) wanted to express their independence, naturally, by getting a kinda crazy haircut and riding the city bus to school alone, respectively — but their parents hesitated. Ultimately, they caved as viewers discovered that Deja’s route passed by Malik’s auto shop and she had been flirting with him via text message. Finally… In flashbacks, Jack, Rebecca and the Big Three went to the pool, yet it was nothing like their Season 1 trip. Unfortunately. The children were about to begin seventh grade and were not into hanging with their mom and dad. Kevin and Randall argued over their less than brotherly treatment of each other… and Kate kissed a boy after falling prey to a prank by popular girls. This Is Us airs on NBC Tuesdays at 9/8c.

So Sad: Botham Jean’s Parents Burst Into Tears When Bodycam Footage Of His Death Plays In Court

Source: NewsOne composite / NewsOne composite Botham Jean Death Footage Plays During Amber Guyger Trial The Amber Guyger murder trial has taken an even sadder turn. The parents of Guyger’s victim Botham Jean burst into tears and left after they were shown footage of his death without warning. CNN reports that Judge Tammy Kemp asked for bodycam footage to be played in court that showed Jean’s final moments. After a few minutes, Botham’s parents and family and friends stood up to leave. Before their exit Botham’s mom, Allison Jean could be heard sobbing loudly while Botham’s father, Bertrum Jean, cowered in the corner covering his ears. I didn’t give any thought to the alleged victim’s family,” Kemp said. CNN has been following the parents during the trial and they add that Amber Jean has been in therapy and fasting and praying every Saturday every 30 minutes for “courage to deal with the trial and acceptance of the outcome.” Botham Jean’s family is suing Guyger and the city of Dallas. The former cop and her lawyers have argued that Guyger “mistook Botham’s apartment for her own” when she killed him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Jean family, we hope they find peace and most importantly, justice at the end of this trial.

Cha-Ching! Joanna Krupa & 31 Other Models Win $900K Lawsuit Against Swingers Club That Illegally Used Their Photos

Source: DJDM/WENN.com / WENN 32 Models Win $900K In Lawsuit Against ‘Miami Velvet’ Swingers Club One Miami swingers club is nearly a million dollars poorer after a judge ruled it owed almost three dozen models some major COIN for using their photos to advertise sex parties .   Real Housewives of Miami star Joanna Krupa is among the 32 women who will be paid. From Daily Mail : “A Miami swingers club has been ordered to pay nearly $900,000 after it used photos of models clad in bikinis and lingerie without permission to advertise sex parties and partner-swapping. A jury in Florida federal court agreed Monday that Miami Velvet must pay a total of $892,500 to the 32 professional models whose images were used in the exclusive club’s fliers, social media accounts and on its website, according to the  Miami Herald. Miami Velvet is one of the city’s most famous swingers clubs, and allows group sex to occur on its premises. Several of the models who featured in their ads are well known, including Joanna Krupa, who appeared on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ and ‘The Real Housewives of Miami’.” According to the site, Krupa was awarded $65,000 in the case. “…while jurors sided with the models, the money awarded to them was far lower than the collective sum of $5.3million which the models were seeking,” Daily Mail continues. “The lawyer for Miami Velvet acknowledged that his clients were responsible for stealing the photographs but argued that the models were demanding too much money.” While it isn’t the sum they were all looking for, Krupa has a baby on the way and an extra $65K can’t hurt!

Source: Michael Ochs Archives / Getty Joan Johnson ran so that Carol’s Daughter , Shea Moisture and even Tracee Ellis Ross ‘ Pattern line could fly. And now, the queen of Afro Sheen and Black haircare icon has died at the age of 89. According to the Chicago Sun-Times , Johnson, the co-founder of Johnson Products Company and the makers of Afro Sheen and Ultra Sheen—passed last Friday (Sep. 6). Her oldest son, Eric G. Johnson , told the newspaper that his trailblazing mother was ‘battling a combination of medical conditions stemming from a 2005 accident that sent her through five back surgeries.” Her husband George added that he lost “the love of his life.” “I have lost a lifelong friend and partner and the love of my life,” he said in a statement. “Joan will be greatly missed by her family and all of those who have come to know her.” In 1954, Johnson and her husband George Johnson started their haircare line on the city’s South Side with a $250 investment and grew their business from $4 million in sales in 1967 to $40 million in 1976, the Sun-Times noted.
