MTV News counts down the most gripping, action-packed moments from ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Breaking Dawn,’ ‘Dragon Tattoo’ and more. By MTV News staff Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” Photo: Warner Bros Rare is the moviegoing experience after which you leave the theater having loved each and every frame that flashed onscreen. Even when talking about our 10 favorite films of the year , we didn’t love everything about them, just most everything. More often than not, however, a film’s success and sustainability can be attributed to a few brilliantly crafted key scenes or sequences. They are the moments that make us ooh and aah, laugh out loud, cringe or cover our eyes. In the spirit of the movie moments that have stuck with us and will continue to do so, here’s our list of the 10 best scenes from 2011’s new releases. SPOILERS ahead. 10. Ryan Gosling’s Airbrushed Abs Reveal, “Crazy, Stupid, Love” Let’s face it, ladies have been mooning away over Ryan Gosling since his star-making turn in “The Notebook.” And although the Hollywood heartthrob always looks good onscreen, we hadn’t seen him cash in on the whole dreamboat card until this year’s hit romantic comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” When he removes his fancy dress shirt to reveal a ridiculously chiseled and tanned torso, he really does look Photoshopped, in the best way possible. — Kara Warner 9. The Hour-Long Fight, “13 Assassins” Takashi Miike’s play-out in two parts: one hour of build-up and one hour of bloody chaos. In an attempt to kill a corrupt ruler in feudal Japan, 13 samurai set the most violent version of a “Home Alone” house to trap the target and his entourage of 200 bodyguards. The result lasts an hour and engages you the entire time. — Kevin Sullivan 8. Bridge Fight in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” The latest, possibly greatest “Apes” movie was already one of the excellent surprises of the 2011 movie season even before the film reached its climax high atop the Golden Gate Bridge. The brillz apes take on the feckless cops in a fight scene that’s tense, cinematically creative and just beautiful to behold. Even more impressive than the throw-down itself is that director Rupert Wyatt manages to slip some genuine character drama into the mix without slowing down the action: Caesar, the ringleader of the simian uprising, goes from reluctant warrior to cold-blooded revolutionary when he finally realizes humans don’t give a hoot about his damn dirty kind. — Eric Ditzian 7. The Final Tap-Out, “Warrior” Sure, there are a few clich
‘My New Year’s resolution is to quit smoking … it’s a very dirty, filthy habit,’ Travie McCoy tells us. By Jocelyn Vena 50 Cent Photo: Larry Busacca/Getty Images Wondering what some of the biggest names in the music industry are resolving to do come 2012? Well, wonder no more. MTV News asked some of those folks just that, and they are dishing on what their New Year’s resolutions are for the next 12 months. “Ah man, so many. So many new things to work on myself. I just got to be conscious, more conscious of myself,” 50 Cent explained. “And try and be a better judge of character with others.” Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy seems to be taking a page from Fiddy’s handbook and looking to better himself in the new year. “My New Year’s resolution is to quit smoking … it’s a very dirty, filthy habit,” he said. “But not [only] is it my New Year’s resolution to quit, but it’s also my New Year’s resolution to get my friends to quit as well.” Common opened up about the philosophical goal he hopes to achieve in the coming year. “I haven’t thought deeply on it, but I would say I just want to be great at everything I do,” he said. “Greatness.” Some celebrities are planning to look inward in the new year, and others, it seems, want to physically broaden their horizons. Jill Scott said, “I’d like to visit Europe more often next year.” Meanwhile, Evanescence ‘s Amy Lee wants to travel in order to meet more of her devoted fans. “We’re gonna make it a goal to just go to all those countries where we have fans going, ‘Hey come to my country. You’ve never been here.’ That’s sort of our goal for next year is to go everywhere and tour all the places we’ve never been and see the world,” she said. “Have some fun.” Before making those resolutions a reality, many celebrities will be out and about on New Year’s Eve looking to break loose at a number of big New Year’s parties . And MTV will also be getting in on the fun during “NYE in NYC 2012,” which will feature Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Mac Miller and more. The show airs live at 11 p.m. ET on Saturday from Times Square, where the famous ball drops. Related Artists 50 Cent Common
‘Fruitcake, it’s the most disgusting, repulsive food ever,’ Travie McCoy tells MTV News. By Christina Garibaldi LMFAO Photo: Jeff Fusco/Getty Images/MTV News Don’t panic, but you only have a few days left to find the perfect holiday gift. Yes, it can be daunting, and yes, it can drive you crazy, but we at MTV News are here to help. But instead of telling you what to buy this season, we asked some of your favorite stars at this year’s annual Z100 Jingle Ball concert in New York to tell us what not to put on your holiday gift list. “The worst gift you could give somebody is a gift that you got from them,” Princeton from Mindless Behavior told MTV News. Regifting is also a big no-no for Hot Chelle Rae ‘s Nash Overstreet, who said, “[The worst gift] is a gift that you got that you didn’t want, so you gave it to them.” Well, if Overstreet is looking to regift anything for his fellow bandmembers, it seems Ian Keaggy might have given him a not-so-subtle hint. “If you’re a girl and you’re looking for just a random guy gift,” Keaggy said, “a safe bet perhaps [is] socks and boxers.” Big Time Rush ‘s James Maslow agrees. “Cool funky socks, or if it’s really cold out and they’re warm socks, that could be a good gift.” If you are planning on baking instead of buying for someone this holiday season, Gym Class Heroes ‘ Travie McCoy says stay away from the fruitcake. “Fruitcake, it’s the most disgusting, repulsive food ever,” McCoy said. “Who decided to put gummy bears in bread?” But what is the absolute worst thing you can give someone? Nothing at all. “The worst is when you forget to give a gift and they got you a gift,” LMFAO ‘s Redfoo said. “So no gift is the worst gift.” What is the one gift you should never give someone? Channing Tatum’s days as Duke might be numbered in Jon Chu’s sequel. By Josh Wigler Bruce Willis in “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” Photo: Paramount Pictures Either Jon Chu and I have a lot in common, or the “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” director was checking in on me during my formative years and caught me spending hours playing with my Joe toys. At least that’s the impression I’m getting from the brand-new “G.I. Joe” trailer , which looks like it was lifted directly from my childhood and projected onto the big screen. (You could have said hi by the way, Jon!) Between fan-favorite character Roadblock (played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson ) ripping enemies to shreds with an automatic heavy gun, Snake Eyes and Jinx repelling from a mountainside cleaving bad-guy ninjas along the way, and a perfectly delivered one-liner from Bruce Willis , it’s safe to say that every square inch of the “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” trailer is filled with win. But in the midst of all that action, there are some hidden details you may have missed. To that end, here are five key scenes from the “G.I. Joe” trailer you’ll want to pay attention to. Warning: Some potential spoilers ahead. Bye-Bye, Duke? Hey, there’s Channing Tatum ! Wait … where’d he go? There are only a handful of Tatum appearances in the trailer, which comes as a bit of a shock, considering his lead role in the last “G.I. Joe” flick. Perhaps he’s being downplayed to show off the Rock and an army of ninjas (totally cool by me), or perhaps his absence hints at a darker fate in store for Duke. Mouse Trap In other folks-who-are-likely-to-die news, there’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance from Joseph Mazzello as Mouse near the top of the trailer: He’s sitting right next to Flint ( D.J. Cotrona ) on the aircraft that’s unknowingly leading the Joes to certain doom. Given that Mouse isn’t a household name in the “Joe” community, as well as the absolute mayhem we see next, chances are very high that the “Jurassic Park” vet’s days are numbered. Cobra Rises Very few will complain about the lack of “Rise of Cobra” carryover in the new “Retaliation” trailer, but if there’s one thing all “Joe” fans can get behind, it’s the return of President Zartan. His position at the top of the U.S. government was easily the most tantalizing cliffhanger in “Rise,” and based on the Cobra banners draped over the side of the White House, “Retaliation” is following through on that potential in a very, very big way. Hail to the Chief Lest you think Zartan is the movie’s big bad, even the President has someone to answer to. Like Mouse, Cobra Commander makes an incredibly brief appearance in the “Retaliation” trailer, sandwiched between Zartan and new baddie Firefly ( Ray Stevenson ) at the one-minute mark. He’s sporting his classic metal face mask, easily the character’s most popular look, and by all appearances, the commander has come a long way from Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s winky goofball performance in “Rise.” Now, if only we knew who was playing him this time around … Kiss Those Lips Goodbye! Read my lips: Snake Eyes’ rubber-masked ninja mouth is gone, gone, gone! Almost as offensive as nipples on the Batsuit, Snake’s inexplicable on-costume mouth was a huge bone of contention for the “Joe” fanbase. Thankfully, we can kiss those lips goodbye and keep them firmly in the past where they belong. Also, even if Snake Eyes still looked mouthy, he slaughters an army of evil ninjas while running along a mountainside. That’s so cool that even rubber lips would be mostly forgivable. Tell us what you thought of the new “G.I. Joe” trailer in the comments section! Check out everything we’ve got on “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Related Photos “G.I. Joe”
Travie McCoy says the clip, featuring Neon Hitch, shows the ‘struggle’ of a long-distance relationship. By Christina Garibaldi Travie McCoy in the Gym Class Heroes’ “Ass Back Home” video Photo: Fueled By Ramen Life on the road can be tough for a musician — just ask Gym Class Heroes . On Monday, the group premiered their video for “Ass Back Home,” the third single from their latest album, The Paper Chronicles II. The clip was shot while the group was on tour and shows frontman Travie McCoy struggling with a long-distance relationship while spending his life on the road. MTV News recently caught up with Gym Class Heroes at Z100’s annual Jingle Ball concert , and they told us how they came up with the concept for their latest video. “It’s us on the road and it’s shot really gritty,” McCoy said. “So it kind of gives people a behind-the-scenes at what it’s like to be on the road, traveling nonstop and also that tension, that struggle of trying to keep a relationship afloat.” Bassist Eric Roberts added:” I remember when I was watching some cuts of the video, I totally just lost thought of the song, and I was just paying attention. I was like, ‘Oh, it’s kind of like a movie.’ ” Playing McCoy’s love interest in the video is British newcomer Neon Hitch, who also sings the chorus. The electro-pop singer, who describes herself as a “free spirit,” was the perfect choice not only for the song, but for the video as well. “They just thought I would fit the song perfectly,” Hitch told MTV News. “So it just happened magically.” It seems like Gym Class Heroes couldn’t agree more. “The song was actually produced by Benny Blanco, and Benny’s worked with Neon in the past,” McCoy said. “I think if anybody gets the song and as far as the message of the song and what the song’s about, it’d be her, because she’s kind of in the midst of all this. Not only did she go above and beyond the call of duty as far as singing it, but it’s something that she can totally relate to, so it’s perfect.” Last month, Gym Class Heroes were forced to cancel the remaining dates of their North American tour due to illness, but fear not, GCH fans: They are planning to get back on the road in the new year. “We wrapped this year up with all the Christmas shows and top of the year, next year, we head overseas,” McCoy said. “And then we come back here to destroy the U.S.” What do you think of Gym Class Heroes’ latest video? Frontman Travie McCoy tells MTV News delays leading up to October 25 release ‘made the record better.’ By James Montgomery Gym Class Heroes’ Travie McCoy Photo: MTV News Way back in March, Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy told MTV News that it was “definitely time” for a new album from the group. Of course, at the time, he probably needed to check his watch: In May, McCoy promised the new GCH album — the sequel to 2005’s The Papercut Chronicles — would be in stores “by late summer,” and, well, summer’s just about over, and there’s still not been a release. But finally, the Heroes’ time has come. On October 25, they’ll release Papercut Chronicles II, and while it’s not exactly summer, McCoy’s not about to complain — in fact, he’s just relieved that it’ll finally be in stores. “Like I said on the last record, [2008’s The Quilt, ] ‘ ’08 is gonna be great/ Imagine 2011.’ October 25, you will be able to purchase and enjoy The Papercut Chronicles II, ” McCoy told MTV News. “We finally have a solid release date, so … right now, we’re actually circling third and about to slide into home, and then it’s off to be mixed and mastered, and then it’s out for public consumption.” A spokesperson for Gym Class Heroes’ label could not be reached to confirm the release date, and while McCoy played it, well, coy when asked about just what lead to the PCC II delay, he did say everything the group has been through has only made them — and their album — stronger. Mostly, though, he’s just thankful he’s not going to have to backtrack on his earlier claims. “There were a couple setbacks that were kind of out of our hands, but we just took ’em in stride, and, in a sense, I think they just made the record better,” he said. “And I’m super excited, finally, because I was going to have to bite my lip … because I had all these people stoked about 2011 and about this record. … So I’m excited we finally have a release date and that this album has definitely shaped up to be everything and more.” Though fans have already gotten a preview of PCC II with its first single, “Stereo Hearts,” McCoy said they’re going to be surprised with the musical direction on the new album. Sure, it’s a continuation of the original Chronicles, but it’s also a whole lot more. And it’s definitely worth the wait. “It’s always hard to listen to a song off a Gym Class Heroes record and kind of get a vibe for what the rest of the record is gonna sound like, but … to sum it all up, it’s definitely a well-rounded album: It’s not just a few singles here or there and some filler,” he said. “It’s got some reoccurring themes from the first Papercut Chronicles, musically and lyrically, and people who were in love with the Papercut Chronicles are gonna pick up on that. But to quote Jay-Z, ‘If you want out old sh–, buy our old album.’ Every album we put out, we try to push that envelope further, and this case is no different.” How do you expect the new Gym Class Heroes album to sound? In celebration of the FBR’s 15th anniversary, the label’s biggest bands rifle through its back catalog. By James Montgomery Paramore Photo: MTV News In 1996, Fueled By Ramen released the now-famous Take-Out Sampler, a cassette compilation that came packaged to look like it was ordered from your neighborhood Chinese restaurant. Last week, they released Cobra Starship ‘s Night Shades, the 130-somethingth album to bear the FBR name … and no, it wasn’t available on cassette. Still, that should give you a pretty good idea of just how far the label has come over the course of 15 years. And this week, FBR will celebrate its ongoing legacy with a pair of shows at New York’s Terminal 5 — Wednesday night’s show, featuring Paramore, the Swellers, This Providence, the Stereo and fun., will stream live on MTV.com beginning at 7 p.m. ET. And we here at MTV News are doing our part to aid in the festivities. We’ve already brought you some of the label’s biggest bands recalling the moment they signed with FBR , and now, those same bands are talking to us about their favorite albums from the label’s rather expansive back catalog. From Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco to Jimmy Eat World and Discount, here are their picks. Cassettes not included. Travie McCoy and Matt McGinley, Gym Class Heroes McGinley : “I’m going to go with Take This to Your Grave, by Fall Out Boy. You might have heard of them. [It’s a] super awesome record, and we definitely listened to it on repeat in the van all the time.” McCoy : “It’s beautiful how they kind of hid such dark and demented lyrics in such happy and poppy punk music. Genius.” McCoy : “The Academy Is … Almost Here. Front to back, it’s an amazing, amazing album, and it shoots us back to when we used to tour with those guys all the time.” McGinley : “Panic! at the Disco’s A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out !” McCoy : “I remember hearing some of the demos for that album, and I was blown away and when the record actually came out, it was like, ‘Wow, these dudes are about to smash, and they tore it up.” Paramore ‘s Hayley Williams : “A really awesome release … was [the] Jimmy Eat World EP, and it had early versions of the Clarity songs. I think it makes this list because we love Jimmy Eat World so much, and it’s so awesome that they released something on our label. We’re really proud of that.” “My all-time favorite FBR release is the Impossibles’ Anthology, it’s sort of all the best Impossibles songs, and it’s incredible. They’re kind of like if Weezer were ska.” “When we were writing Brand New Eyes, I sent an email to some folks at the label requesting some music. I actually got back a Discount EP … they did a cover EP of Billy Brag songs called Love, Billy, and the cover art was really cool, I remember liking that a lot. I just really like Discount. If you don’t know who [they] are, you should check them out; I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this or not, but it may or may not be Alison from the Kills and Dead Weather fronting a pop/punk band. It’s awesome and there’s so much cool, raw energy, and her voice is great. I love the music and I think it’s very telling of that time in music for pop/punk music. Good stuff.” Help MTV celebrate Fueled by Ramen’s 15th anniversary on Wednesday, September 7, as we present a live party featuring some of your favorite FBR acts, including Paramore. First single from the group’s The Papercut Chronicles II album features vocals by Maroon 5’s Adam Levine. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Gym Class Heroes’ Travie McCoy and Matt McGinley on the set of the “Stereo Hearts” music video Photo: MTV News Gym Class Heroes don’t exactly have a lot to do in the video for “Stereo Hearts,” the first single from their upcoming The Papercut Chronicles II. Instead, it’s their shadows that handle most of the heavy lifting. “The video basically plays on the idea that we’re sort of just being casual, hanging out, being ourselves and our shadows get wild and get loose,” drummer Matt McGinley told MTV News on the video set. “It’s kind of fun. I’ve always felt like my shadow has been trying to kill me for 28 years.” “That’s just me,” frontman Travie McCoy laughed, “creeping up on your ass.” So while the GCH guys were content to crack jokes and let their shadows have the spotlight on the “Stereo” set, they’re taking the opposite approach when it comes to their new album. Because not only is it a sequel to their beloved 2005 album , it’s their return to prominence after McCoy’s Lazarus solo trek and a break that was, by all accounts, too long . “We just played a show at the Nokia in L.A., and just to see how elated kids were that we were back together again, I almost cried, I’m not going to lie,” McCoy said. “We’ve been away too long, and anyone who thought me putting out Lazarus was the end of Gym Class Heroes was definitely proven wrong with that show.” And with “Stereo Hearts,” they’re officially getting back to business. Produced by Bennie Blanco and featuring Maroon 5’s Adam Levine on the hook, it’s a prime-time slab of genre-mashing, sweat-inducing pop, the kind of song that may very well push GCH to summertime superstardom. And, in working with Levine, they’ve learned about taking the next step too. “It’s a fun love song at the end of the day, and it’s definitely got a summertime vibe … and having Adam bless us with his vocal stylings doesn’t hurt much,” McCoy said. “He just destroyed it. Watching that dude do [vocal] runs, and first he belts out the hook, and I’m like, ‘OK!’ then he does overdubs and he’s like, ‘Nah, I don’t like that, I can do better. ‘ Everything’s just flawless and dude’s so talented. Just getting into a song and pushing it, it was inspiring.” Are you happy to have Gym Class Heroes back? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Gym Class Heroes
