Flawless Victory: A New Mortal Kombat Movie Has Been Greenlit for Filming

Continued here:

Source: Tasia Wells / Getty S harpen your kunai and ancestral hats —a Mortal Kombat reboot is finally happening. Fresh off the release of Netherralm Studios’ Mortal Kombat 11 , Warner Bros. will be working with producer James Wan ( Aquaman)  to bring Earthrealm’s heroes against the forces of Outworld to life once more. News of the announcement came from ABC Australia reporter Claire Campbell, who tweeted that filming will take place in South Australia and it will be “the largest movie ever filmed and produced” in the region. Premier of South Australia, Steven Marshall, also confirmed the news of the film reboot in the area, which will be in pre-production later this month. The largest film production in South Australia's history! @warnerbros will bring their epic action film, Mortal Kombat, to life here in SA. SA locations. SA crews. SA VFX companies. It will enhance our production capabilities and create new jobs for the local film industry. pic.twitter.com/jkPeRuq1Wz — Steven Marshall, MP (@marshall_steven) May 14, 2019 Along with Wan will be Simon McQuoid making his directorial debut, and  longtime gamer and screenwriter Greg Russo will be providing the script. Rumors about the movie date as far back as last year, with a Hashtag Show report discovering details on the reboot’s plot. The movie will be centered around a new character named Cole Turner, who is described as “a Philadelphia boxer that is recruited by a prophecy chaser to compete in a fantastical tournament – the outcome of which determines the fate of Earth and it’s inhabitants.” Old characters and new throughout the MK lore in the initial report are expected to appear as well, including Australian favorite Kano, Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, and much more. The first Mortal Kombat film adaptation was released in 1995 and is touted as one of the greatest video game film adaptations of all time. The movie sparked character-redefining performances from Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as the sinister sorcerer Shang Tsung, and Trevor Goddard as the aforementioned mercenary Kano. The latter’s performance alone was the sole reason the character was retconned with an Australian background in later video games. Mortal Kombat attempted another reboot before this with the web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy , exclusively on YouTube. Tagawa reprised his role as Shang Tsung in the second season, eventually returning once more as the sorcerer in Mortal Kombat 11 . Watch the trailer from the 1995 version of  Mortal Kombat  below:

Floyd Mayweather to 50 Cent: Read These Checks for $72 Million!

If you haven’t been keeping up on the bizarre Dr. Seuss-related conflict between Floyd Mayweather and 50 Cent, allow us to bring you up to speed: Earlier this week, 50 challenged Mayweather to read one page of a Harry Potter book  in a video that was supposed to be a take on the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, but seemed to kind of miss the point of those clips. 50 Cent Feuds With Floyd Mayweather The next day,  audio of Mayweather struggling to read  was released by an NYC radio show, and it became apparent that the champ might actually be semi-illiterate. Some responded by saying that the situation is sort of sad and we probably shouldn’t be mocking Mayweather. 50 responded by downgrading his challenge to “one page of the Cat in the Hat.” Now Mayweather has responded in his own fashion: Those are checks from Mayweather’s last two fights. Proof that they don’t call him “Money” for nothing. The boxer tweeted the proof of his jaw-dropping paydays with the caption “Read this $72,276,000.00. God bless.” Not bad for a dude who can’t get through The Sorcerer’s Stone. Your move, Fiddy! 15 Celebrity Feuds We Never Saw Coming 1. Seth Rogen vs. Nancy Grace Nancy Grace wondered aloud on Twitter whether pot was to blame for a guy killing his wife. Seth Rogen replied that the anchor is a “dumbass.”

Russell Brand Has Free Reign As Movie Awards Host

‘There is no yelling at Russell,’ executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic tells MTV News about the host’s big night. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz and Jim Cantiello Russell Brand Photo: MTV News UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Russell Brand is like John Locke : Nobody tells him what he can and can’t do. When the British actor and comedian steps onto the Gibson Amphitheatre’s stage Sunday night as host of the MTV Movie Awards , he’ll be able to do literally whatever he wants — he just might get yelled at about it later. Speaking with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz ahead of his Movie Awards appearance, Brand was asked if there are any restrictions on what he can or cannot do, what he can or cannot say, come the big evening. According to the man himself, the answer is a resounding “no,” but that doesn’t mean there isn’t the threat of consequences looming over his head. “[The producers] just go, ‘Do whatever you want!’ And then one hour later they’ll say, ‘You shouldn’t have done that,’ ” he said with all the signature energy that Brand’s become known for. “It’s a weird technique!” But the producers behind the Movie Awards tell a very different tale. When Jim Cantiello spoke with executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic, it became clear that Russell’s capacity to do hilariously bad things onstage is not just limitless, but endorsed by the folks behind the scenes. “No, that’s wrong,” Ignjatovic said when asked if Brand is going to get scolded if he pushes things too far. “There’s no yelling at Russell. It’s all love. The show ends, we go and we hug him, and we tell him it’s great. It’s all love.” Russell, we sure do hope you’re reading this — if you’re to take Mr. Ignjatovic’s words as gospel, then you just might be able to fulfill your greatest wishes come Sunday evening’s end. “MTV Movie Awards incorporates two of my favorite things: movies and awards,” Brand said when he was initially announced for the hosting gig. “If somehow group sex could be involved it would be the greatest night of my life.” So, yeah — we’re not trying to say you can turn this into the MTV Group Sex Awards you’ve dreamed of, Russell, but we might be trying to say that. Julianne Hough’s Daniel Radcliffe Love Note: ‘I Never Heard Back!’

As ‘Harry Potter’ casts its final spell at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards, the ‘Sorcerer’s Stone’ extra recalls her childhood crush. By Amy Wilkinson Julianne Hough Photo: MTV News UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Here’s a, perhaps, little-known fact about “Rock of Ages” star Julianne Hough: Before she was tango-ing on “Dancing With the Stars” or kicking off her Sunday shoes in “Footloose,” the actress was a member of house Gryffindor at Hogwarts. That’s right — Hough, along with brother Derek — was an extra on “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” way back in 2001. So when we caught up with the 23-year-old and her “Rock of Ages” co-star Diego Boneta at the junket for their movie musical (out June 15), we had to ask what she thought the franchise’s chances were at its final MTV Movie Awards . The magical movie is up for seven nominations, including Movie of the Year, Best Male Performance (Daniel Radcliffe), Best Female Performance (Emma Watson), Best Cast, Best Fight (Daniel Radcliffe and Ralph Fiennes), Best Kiss (Rupert Grint and Emma Watson) and Best Hero (Daniel Radcliffe). But instead of weighing in on the flick’s odds, Hough had a special message for Radcliffe: “Well, I just want to say really quickly: Daniel, I gave you a love note during ‘The Sorcerer’s Stone,’ and I never heard back,” Hough said with a laugh, as co-star Boneta looked on dumbfounded. “I didn’t know that!” he exclaimed of her early film role. “I was in the first one, and you can see me twice,” Hough said. “I was Gryffindor.” If only Hough had been sorted into Ravenclaw like Cho Chang, perhaps, then, she could have captured Radcliffe’s heart. ‘Hunger Games’ Girl On Fire Outfit: Meet The Designer

In this week’s Hobnobbing, we catalog Judianna Makovsky’s iconic looks. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in the girl on fire costume in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate The Web nearly caught fire Thursday (January 19) when Entertainment Weekly debuted the first image of ” Hunger Games ” characters Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) in their parade costumes, snapped mere moments before District 12’s heroine becomes (quite literally) the Girl on Fire (we see you with that lit fuse, Cinna!). Of course, fans of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel know that the textured black suits are meant to reflect the duo’s coal-mining community, brought to sartorial life by their savvy stylist (played by Lenny Kravitz). “This is one of those moments where Cinna’s character syncs up with the creativity of our costume designer Judianna Makovsky,” director Garry Ross told EW. As if sitting front row at a Capitol-sponsored fashion show, fans have slowly but surely been treated to the growing catalog of Makovsky’s “Hunger Games” looks — from Effie Trinket’s lavender, silk brocade gown recently revealed on Capitol Couture to Katniss’ and Peeta’s futuristic training uniforms . Even the most casual cinephile should recognize Makovsky’s work. The Oscar nominee (and frequent Ross collaborator) is a Hollywood veteran with nearly 30 years of experience crafting iconic period and present-day looks for some of the silver screen’s biggest projects. After toiling as a wardrobe assistant on films like “The Cotton Club” and “Dick Tracy,” Makovsky took the lead, whipping together wardrobes for Tom Hanks’ “Big” (which Ross wrote and co-produced) and “The Quick and the Dead.” She earned her first Oscar nomination for Ross’ 1999 retrosplosion “Pleasantville,” starring Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon as two teens who time-travel back to the 1950s, necessitating more sweater sets and curve-hugging skirts than an Ann Taylor outlet. The result was an eye-popping collection of richly saturated confections, worthy of recognition by the Academy and the Costume Designer’s Guild. An Oscar-nominated semester at Hogwarts followed (yes, Makovsky dressed Harry, Ron and Hermione in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”) before she reteamed with Ross for the 2004 equestrian classic “Seabiscuit” (starring then-up-and-comer Elizabeth Banks, a.k.a. Effie Trinket); the costumer earned her third Oscar nom for the film’s Depression-era garb. A mishmash of films followed, including “National Treasure,” “The Last Airbender” and “X-Men: The Last Stand” (perhaps the film in which she perfected her bodysuit construction), before she once again signed on with Ross for “The Hunger Games.” With several outfits yet to be seen from the March 23 release, including an unfettered view of Katniss’ glitzy interview gown, we can only expect the best from Makovsky. Could another Oscar nomination be in her dystopian future? What do you think about the “Hunger Games” costumes so far? Best Movie Scenes Of 2011

MTV News counts down the most gripping, action-packed moments from ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Breaking Dawn,’ ‘Dragon Tattoo’ and more. By MTV News staff Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” Photo: Warner Bros Rare is the moviegoing experience after which you leave the theater having loved each and every frame that flashed onscreen. Even when talking about our 10 favorite films of the year , we didn’t love everything about them, just most everything. More often than not, however, a film’s success and sustainability can be attributed to a few brilliantly crafted key scenes or sequences. They are the moments that make us ooh and aah, laugh out loud, cringe or cover our eyes. In the spirit of the movie moments that have stuck with us and will continue to do so, here’s our list of the 10 best scenes from 2011’s new releases. SPOILERS ahead. 10. Ryan Gosling’s Airbrushed Abs Reveal, “Crazy, Stupid, Love” Let’s face it, ladies have been mooning away over Ryan Gosling since his star-making turn in “The Notebook.” And although the Hollywood heartthrob always looks good onscreen, we hadn’t seen him cash in on the whole dreamboat card until this year’s hit romantic comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” When he removes his fancy dress shirt to reveal a ridiculously chiseled and tanned torso, he really does look Photoshopped, in the best way possible. — Kara Warner 9. The Hour-Long Fight, “13 Assassins” Takashi Miike’s play-out in two parts: one hour of build-up and one hour of bloody chaos. In an attempt to kill a corrupt ruler in feudal Japan, 13 samurai set the most violent version of a “Home Alone” house to trap the target and his entourage of 200 bodyguards. The result lasts an hour and engages you the entire time. — Kevin Sullivan 8. Bridge Fight in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” The latest, possibly greatest “Apes” movie was already one of the excellent surprises of the 2011 movie season even before the film reached its climax high atop the Golden Gate Bridge. The brillz apes take on the feckless cops in a fight scene that’s tense, cinematically creative and just beautiful to behold. Even more impressive than the throw-down itself is that director Rupert Wyatt manages to slip some genuine character drama into the mix without slowing down the action: Caesar, the ringleader of the simian uprising, goes from reluctant warrior to cold-blooded revolutionary when he finally realizes humans don’t give a hoot about his damn dirty kind. — Eric Ditzian 7. The Final Tap-Out, “Warrior” Sure, there are a few clich

‘Deathly Hallows’ Midnight Screenings Cast $24 Million Spell On Fans

Latest ‘Harry Potter’ film scores third-biggest midnight opening in history, behind two ‘Twilight’ films. By Tom DiChiara “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” fans at a midnight screening in New York City on Thursday Photo: John Lamparski/Getty Images Like a fine wine, “Harry Potter” only gets better with age — at least when it comes to midnight debuts. The seventh film in the boy-wizard franchise, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” conjured up $24 million domestically from early Friday morning (November 19) screenings, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com . In so doing, the film outstripped last year’s “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” which nabbed $22.2 million from midnight showings, to land the #3 spot on the all-time list for midnight debuts. The only movies ahead of it belong to another cinematic series that has captivated teens: “The Twilight Saga.” Last summer’s “Eclipse” ranks first with a whopping $30 million from its midnight showings, and 2009’s “New Moon” is a close second with $26.3 million. While “Deathly Hallows – Part 1” didn’t exactly suck the life out of its vampire competition in the midnight-screenings department, the film is well on its way to a magical box-office run. Hollywood.com box-office prognosticator Paul Dergarabedian is forecasting an opening weekend well north of $100 million, which would make it only the second “Potter” film to achieve that feat (2005’s “Goblet of Fire” tallied $102.7 million in its opening frame). Other analysts are estimating that it could earn as much as $130 million, solidifying it a spot in the top-five opening weekends in history. So will “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” eventually beat out the franchise-topping $317 million domestic gross of the first film in the series, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”? Largely positive reviews certainly won’t hurt it. And neither will the fact that it is “Part 1” of the epic saga’s finale and should draw repeat viewings from fans who aren’t quite ready to say goodbye. Of course, any records “Part 1” does set will likely be broken when “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” hits theaters in July.
