Midday Motivation | Compliments & Criticism

The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism. ~Norman Vincent Peale Its naturally to be drawn to people who always compliment you but what about those who offer honest criticism? Remember, success is not just about being told that you are “great,” its also a willingness to be open to advice. Humility helps you become bigger and better. If you want real success, receive the compliments AND the criticism.

‘Glee’ Guest Star Darren Criss Finally Meets Katy Perry

‘She’s very sweet,’ Criss said of ‘Teenage Dream’ songstress By Amy Wilkinson, additional reporting by James Montgomery Darren Criss Photo: MTV News Ever since “Glee” guest star Darren Criss warbled Katy Perry’s track “Teenage Dream” on the series’ Nov. 9 episode “Never Been Kissed,” he and Perry have been directing enthusiastic accolades at one another through the press. The pair finally had the first in-person meeting of their “mutual admiration society” at Sunday’s American Music Awards, and Criss left singing Perry’s praises once again. “[I met Perry] very, very quickly,” Criss told MTV News while walking the red carpet at Rolling Stone ‘s post-AMA party. “It was cool. She’s very sweet.” Following Criss’ debut on the Fox musical series earlier this month, Perry shared her compliments via Twitter, writing, “Oh…My…Gosh… this just brought a sweet tear to my eye! Teenage Dream on GLEE makes my heart go WEEEEE!” She later told “Access Hollywood” , “He’s amazing! I love when any of my songs are remixed or interpreted differently. I just love that. I really welcome a creative mind to anything.” Criss was flattered by Perry’s praise, telling MTV News last week the feelings were indeed mutual. “Katy makes my heart ‘go weeeee,’ ” he said. Criss has been quick to credit Perry and the track’s other writers and producers — Dr. Luke, Ben Levin, Bonnie McKee and Max Martin — with the single’s success (it reached #1 on the digital downloads chart last week, a first for a “Glee” single). “I’m forever in [Katy’s] debt, basically,” Criss said. “She’s been very supportive about the whole thing. She’s a cool chick, and I’m a big fan.” What did you think of Criss’ performance of “Teenage Dream” on “Glee?” Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Katy Perry

Ryan Reynolds Likens Filming ‘Buried’ To ‘A Fever Dream’

‘I would have been a fool to not pursue this with everything I had,’ he tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Ryan Reynolds Photo: MTV News Props to Ryan Reynolds for stepping out of his standard zany comedy and blockbuster action film roles and into the intense — and claustrophobia-inducing — thriller “Buried.” The entire film takes place inside a wooden coffin buried under the sand of the Iraqi desert. Reynolds plays Paul Conroy, a desperate man trying to escape, and he is the only actor shown onscreen. When we caught up with Reynolds and his “Buried” director, Rodrigo Cortes, we wondered what kind of prep the “Green Lantern” actor did to get ready to be in that box for so long. “This is the only film I’ve ever done where I did not rehearse a moment of it before stepping onto the set,” Reynolds said. “I just don’t know if you could. Who wants to? It would be awful to try and rehearse this at home and try to express all of these different kinds of emotions in a close-up. “It’s just something you’ve gotta do when you’re out there, and then it will feel like a fever dream,” he continued. “And that’s what it was. I walked away thinking it felt like I had a weird nightmare.” So would Reynolds rather get back in a box for a sequel or do another “Van Wilder” movie? “Gosh, that’s a good question,” he said. “I’ll take another film in a box, because the reward is pretty great doing a film like this.” Speaking of rewards, Reynolds’ director had nothing but the highest praise for his star. “[Ryan is] an actor able to develop very deep and very committed emotions with very small things, in a very organic way,” Cortes said. “It’s impossible to catch him lying. He never acts; he always is. It’s amazing. It’s so heartbreaking.” He went on to compare Reynolds to one of the most memorable actors in Hollywood history: Cary Grant. “He has an alien sense of timing. I haven’t seen anyone like that since Cary Grant, so it’s a gift for a director,” Cortes said. “So from the very first moment, he was a long shot, he was going to say no, it was between ‘The Proposal’ and ‘Green Lantern,’ so come on, is he going to come to Barcelona to our little box? But for some reason, he said yes. I still wonder why.” A humbled Reynolds seemed flattered by the compliments. “That is high praise. I’ve taken it with a grain of salt or a crate of Valium,” he laughed. “It was a unique opportunity, and I would have been a fool to not pursue this with everything I had. It was just such an amazing script with an amazing filmmaker and something that had never, ever been done before.” Watching “Buried” with an audience, Reynolds said, is as unique as filming the project. “I’ve never been a part of a film where you walk into the theater and everybody takes a deep breath before the credits start rolling and you don’t exhale until the end,” he said. “It’s just amazing.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Buried.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Justin Bieber Talks ‘CSI’ Cameo

The pop star is looking forward to reaching new audiences on the crime drama’s September 23 premiere. By James Dinh Justin Bieber appears on “CSI” Photo: CBS While he may cause a little mischief now and then , Justin Bieber is far more wholesome than the troubled teen he plays on the season premiere of “CSI.” In a behind-the-scenes video that also contains a few teaser clips from the September 23 episode, the pop star and “CSI” actor George Eads talk about working together. The teen sensation said he was confident that his legion of Bieliebers would enjoy the premiere — as well as the episode later in the season that would find him reprising his role as Jason McCann. “It’s going to be fun. There’s two episodes that I’m doing. It’s high energy,” he said. Bieber said that he has always been a fan of the show, as well as its spinoffs. “I liked it because you never knew what was going to happen. Now that I’m on it, it’s pretty cool,” he said. He added that his cameo would be boundary-crossing for both him and the show. “It opens a different audience to the show,” he said, “and it also helps me because a new audience that might not know me is now going to see me. So it works both ways.” The singer noted that working with Eads, who plays forensic scientist Nick Stokes, was his favorite part of the process. Eads returned the compliments. “He’s very popular and I know he’s very gifted,” said the actor. “But I think it’ll be cool for fans of his and the show to see him do some acting. And I’m kind of getting in his face, so it’s really cool.” The character of Jason, who the pop star describes as “kind of like a bad kid,” gets in Stokes’ face as well. In one scene, Jason tries to flip the script on an interrogation, asking Stokes, “Where’s your gun, your vest, your badge? You off work or something?” Another scene shows the teen watching a grueling fight. While Bieber says he had a little trouble remembering his lines, he definitely gave Eads a good first impression. “I told him, ‘Sorry we have to rehearse so many times,’ and he goes, ‘No, that’s all right. I’m a perfectionist,’ ” the actor recalled. If the “CSI” cameo doesn’t cure fans’ Bieber fever, they can look forward to seeing the pop star on the big screen in 2011, when his 3-D concert movie hits theaters . Nichols This image sent in by an alert reader captures the oil spill in a nutshell: high emotions provoking outraged action, the BP logo besmirched, and all of us wishing that someone could just phone “Restore America” to make it all right again. But with “Top Kill” dead and “Junk Shot” trashed , this disaster just entered endurance phase. Dancing with the Stars: What are the Judges Really Saying?

We usually take time each week to re-investigate Bruno Tonioli’s criticisms on Dancing with the Stars . His effusive praise leads him into hurtful orgasms that induce a heart attack every single week. Serious stuff. This week we’ve decided to reevaluate fellow judges Len Goodman and Carrie Ann Inaba too, as their compliments and complaints often go unnoticed next to the bile-spewing barrage of Bruno. If you can handle the truth behind each judge’s comments — and video of each DWTS ‘s pair of dances last night, including the “futuristic cha-cha-cha” pictured above — venture forth.
