Cast may instead put on a charity concert later this year to support its Give a Note campaign. By Jocelyn Vena Darren Criss in “Glee” Photo: FOX After two successful runs in the past, “Glee” won’t hit the road this summer. Despite earlier reports that the show would kick off another tour this year, a rep tells The Hollywood Reporter , “We currently have no plans of touring the cast this summer.” However, there are plans to hold a charity concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles later this year. Proceeds from the show would benefit the “Glee” Give a Note campaign, which supports music education programs in schools. Sources told Billboard.com that dates have already been discussed, but the show or shows are only in the planning stages. September seems to be the target date for the charity concert. Although a concert tour had been discussed, the focus now seems to be on the charity gig. “We have been talking about continuing our work on a next phase of ‘Glee’ Give a Note,” said Jane Balek, Give a Note’s COO and assistant executive director of the National Association for Music Education. “But no definite projects were discussed.” She added that “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy and Fox are “truly supportive of the mission of NAfME and its Give a Note Foundation.” Last year’s tour was later made into a 3-D film , “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” The film opened last August, and despite the show’s TV success, it failed to ignite the box office, profiting only $5.7 million in its opening weekend and landing at #11 that week. We take a closer look at flick’s disappointing 11th-place debut. By Eric Ditzian Chris Colfer in “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” Photo: 20th Century Fox All is not well with the crooning kids of New Directions. “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” sunk at the multiplex this weekend, roping in just $5.7 million and landing in 11th place at the box office. So what happened? The film starred show faves Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer, notched an A-plus CinemaScore from moviegoers under 25, and was coming off a “Glee” season that averaged more than 10 million viewers . MTV News consulted with a few industry insiders about the movie’s opening and came up with five reasons to explain the box-office blunder: The Demo Successful 3-D concert films from Hannah Montana and Justin Bieber had one thing in common: a tween-centric audience. But as Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, points out, that’s simply not the case with “Glee.” “True fans of the TV series aren’t just teens,” he said. “The majority of fans are adults, and they certainly aren’t the demographic that will run out to see a concert film, especially one that is in 3-D. Besides, Gleeks most likely went to see the live performances that the film is based on.” Bock argues that, for “Glee,” the more accurate comparison is not Bieber’s “Never Say Never” but “U2 3D.” That film, he said, is the only other 3-D concert doc not geared toward a younger audience. “Despite U2 being one of the most popular bands on earth, that film barely scratched $10 million,” he added. The Marketing “Glee” not only suffered from having a core audience unfriendly to 3-D concert docs, but its marketing campaign failed to attract new eyeballs. According to Brandon Gray of Box Office Mojo , “In its marketing, ‘Glee’ was strictly for the hard-core Gleeks, as it came off as redundant and self-congratulatory to more casual watchers who can see the television series for free. Despite the show’s hype, only around an estimated 500,000 tickets were sold for the movie.” Even Fox TV execs reportedly weren’t pleased with the marketing effort, with an unnamed source from that department telling Deadline , “I think it was a sh—y campaign that did not effectively communicate what the movie was or that the people who had seen it reviewed it positively. I think the feature company took a very laid-back approach, feeling their only job was to alert the core fans, and that’s not enough to fill seats.” “The Help” Even if the marketing campaign had been stronger, “Glee” still had to battle at the box office with “The Help,” Emma Stone’s segregation-era drama (which opened with $25.5 million). The concert film came out on the losing end. “It’s quite obvious that ‘The Help’ came along and scooped up the attention of a huge section of female moviegoers,” said Phil Contrino, editor of Boxoffice.com. “When you have a film that over-performs like ‘The Help,’ it causes a ripple effect, and ‘Glee’ felt the brunt of it.” The 3-D So there were problems with demographics, marketing and a crowded multiplex. But let’s not forget the public has become less receptive to 3-D in general, often choosing to go the cheaper 2-D route if the movie at hand doesn’t feel like a must-see-in-3-D event. As successful as “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” was, for example, a majority of audiences still opted for 2-D screenings over opening weekend. For “Glee,” the public had no such option. “Overall excitement was not too high, and the lack of a regular-priced 2-D option prompted cash-strapped teens to skip the film,” wrote Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru . The Overexposure Finally, “Glee” found itself not only fighting external competition, but itself. Perhaps there’s just a little too much “Glee” going on at the moment. “Kids can watch the real ‘Glee’ for free on Fox and faux ‘The Glee Project’ on Oxygen, so why spend their milk money on a movie ticket?” wrote Nikki Finke at Deadline . “And maybe ‘Glee’ is just over-exposed right now and not as cool as it was initially.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Is it as good as the show? Completely gratuitous? Worth the 3-D effects? Read what the critics have to say. By Kara Warner Chord Overstreet, Kevin McHale, Cory Monteith and Lea Michele in “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” Photo: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation For the “Glee”-obsessed out there counting down the days until the start of the hit TV show’s third season, your wait has been temporarily abated with the arrival of “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” Here at MTV News, we’ve been celebrating the arrival of the 88-minute music-filled extravaganza with several fun moments with castmembers, including a “Glee”-style musical recap of the film and a hilarious list of superlatives . But now, with the movie finally out, it’s time to analyze the nuts and bolts of the film by way of critical mass — it’s currently posting a 61 percent “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Read on for the “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” reviews, pro/con style. The Setup “A blend of concert footage, interstitial fan segments and faux behind-the-scenes snippets (the actors remain in character), pic avoids going the ‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’ route of documenting the cast members’ rise to stardom. Nor does it offer much in the way of surprises. Instead, the goal is largely to provide the ‘Glee’ Live! concert event for those who missed the recent tour, an immersive experience enhanced by fan testimonials about the series’ positive impact on their lives. As tempting as it is to label this approach over-calculated and self-congratulatory, it’s virtually impossible not to be swept up in the surge of ebullience and affection. As one fan attests, ‘ “Glee” is like medicine.’ Adds another, ‘It’s like the playlist of my life.’ — Lael Loewenstein, Variety “Even Gleeks who love to watch seasoned showbiz belters pretend to be high school kids on the hit TV series ‘Glee’ may wince at the cheesy marketing angle of ‘Glee the 3D Concert Movie.’ And I report this as a former geeky high school alto who is, if not a Gleek, at least ‘Glee’ friendly. … The positive power of a TV show to encourage tolerance and compassion among its viewers is a wonderful thing. But these ‘success stories’ tilt uncomfortably toward self-congratulation on the part of the producers; certainly they register as overkill for the intended audience, who presumably already know how awesome it is.” — Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly The Performances “The concert stuff is a slightly knottier matter. The actors from the series perform in character, enacting the roles they play on the show onstage as they sing; Lea Michele’s goofily diva-esque Rachel belts out Streisand’s big ‘Funny Girl’ number ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade’ as if Babs herself were out in the audience checking it out. … A Kurt/Rachel duet of ‘Get Happy’ and ‘Happy Days Are Here Again’ is an apt nod to Judy Garland and the originalist strain of glee-club singing and is kind of nifty. On the other hand, Finn’s ballad rendition of ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ is an equally apt reminder of the fact that just because something can be done doesn’t mean that it should, and the version of Queen’s cheekily crass ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ by Mark Salling’s studly Puck is both entirely beside the point and from hunger, as it were. — Glen Kinney, MSN Movies “Another of the movie’s strengths is the showcasing of cast members with dance training, like McHale, Heather Morris and Harry Shum Jr. The gifted Shum gets favored by the camera frequently during choreographer Zach Woodlee’s dance routines, while Morris — whose deadpan timing as ditzy cheerleader Brittany is a show standout — shines in her pumped-up version of Britney Spears’ ‘I’m a Slave 4 U.’ ” — Robert Abele, The Los Angeles Times The Final Word “For a film that was put together so rapidly, it doesn’t look at all shoddy (except for a couple of frames near the end shot from the giant screen instead of the stage). The 3D effect, however, is largely superfluous until the final credits, when the show’s trademark blue slushie heads straight for the viewer. On that note, you might leave ‘Glee 3D’ feeling a little gooey all over, but that slushie does taste kind of sweet.” — Loewenstein, Variety “The movie is entertaining and, admittedly, completely unnecessary. Yes, it works well enough in theaters. But it also would have worked just as well as a heavily promoted special television event broadcast over Thanksgiving weekend. … In the end, ‘Glee: The 3D Concert Movie’ is actually a perfect representation of ‘Glee’ the TV show: At its best, it’s joyful, uplifting and even, occasionally, moving. And at its worst, it’s a propaganda piece designed to win our undying loyalty to a TV show/cash cow that advocates for the little guy even though it’s clearly turned into a diva.” — Jen Chaney, The Washington Post Check out everything we’ve got on “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
