‘Little Fockers’ Win Big During First 2011 Box-Office Weekend

Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro’s comedy sequel takes down the Coen brothers’ ‘True Grit’ for the second weekend in a row. By Josh Wigler Robert DeNiro and Ben Stiller in “Little Fockers” Photo: Universal Studios It’s a new year at the box office, but the specter of 2010 hangs heavily over the first weekend session of 2011: Beyond the extremely limited releases of “Another Year” and “Blue Valentine,” this past weekend saw a complete dearth of new movies in theaters nationwide, leaving old competitors to slog it out for supremacy. “Little Fockers” won the top spot for a second straight week — $26.3 million take giving Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro’s comedy sequel a total gate of $103.2 million since landing in theaters two weeks ago. While many studios would look at that number as a decisive success, it’s a trickier story with “Fockers,” as the film’s immediate predecessor, “Meet the Fockers,” had earned $162.5 million across the same dates in 2004. The comedy franchise apparently doesn’t carry the same weight it once did. Despite landing in second place, “True Grit” was once again the real box-office winner with a $24.5 million weekend haul. After bringing in $86.8 million in 12 days, the Coen brothers’ latest flick is officially their biggest one yet, surpassing the $74.3 million earned by their Oscar-winning “No Country for Old Men” in 2008. Box Office Mojo describes “True Grit” as “the most attended Western drama since ‘Tombstone’ from Christmas 1993,” which is one heck of an accomplishment and a deserved one, too, thanks to the film’s expert directing and brilliant performances from Jeff Bridges, Hailee Steinfeld and others. Bridges continues to hold a wide-ranging presence at the box office as “Tron Legacy” remained a top performer, hanging on to third place after three weekends in theaters. But with only $196.4 million earned worldwide since its initial debut, Disney’s decision to resurrect the cult revered sci-fi franchise remains questionable. “Yogi Bear” and “The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader” round out the top five at $13 million and $10.5 million takes, respectively. New releases “Blue Valentine” and “Another Year” played at a mere 10 locations between the two of them, resulting in a combined box-office total of $451,000. “Blue Valentine” secured the weekend’s highest per-screen average at $45,000 a pop. The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Little Fockers” ($26.3 million) #2 “True Grit” ($24.5 million) #3 “Tron Legacy” ($18.3 million) #4 “Yogi Bear” ($13 million) #5 “The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader” ($10.5 million) Upcoming Releases Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Country Strong” and Jim Carrey’s “I Love You, Phillip Morris” enter wide expansion next week, while Nicolas Cage’s “Season of the Witch” cuts its way into the new year. Gwyneth Paltrow Turned To Robert Downey Jr. For ‘Country Strong’ Insight

Paltrow asked her ‘Iron Man’ co-star for help understanding her drug-addicted character. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Gwyneth Paltrow Photo: MTV News For her role in “Country Strong” (in theaters this week), Gwyneth Paltrow didn’t just face the challenge of singing and recording country music. In order to embody her character — fallen Nashville star Kelly Canter — she also tapped into some dark elements that are unfortunately tied to the pitfalls of being a celebrity: addiction and drug use. When MTV News caught up with the Oscar winner, we asked her how she was able to harness a dark side for the film. “I’m a very dark person,” she joked. “Don’t let me fool you. “I think we all have darkness, don’t we?” she said, seriously. “I certainly do. I’ve been through a lot. I know people who have been through a lot, and there’s always a lot to draw from. You see things, I think, when you’re an actor. You notice behavior and you notice stuff. It all kind of goes into the computer.” Interestingly enough, Paltrow ended up reaching out to her “Iron Man” co-star and friend Robert Downey Jr. — who has been through his share of career ups and downs — for his insight into what leads a person into that addictive, self-destructive behavior. “[I reached out to him] because I understood addiction, I used to be very addicted to cigarettes,” Paltrow revealed. “I understood that, ‘This is bad for me. My father has throat cancer, but I’m going to smoke this,’ but I couldn’t understand in terms of wrecking other people’s lives in your wake and just being so altered and so drunk or on pills that you embarrass yourself and you wreck people’s lives and you cheat on people. All that stuff … it was a whole other level. “He really helped me understand how you get there,” she said of Downey. “He wrote me this amazing e-mail. I was like, ‘OK, I get it now.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Country Strong.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Gwyneth Paltrow Says Husband Chris Martin Is A ‘Genius’ Actor

‘I don’t think he would ever do it, but he’s genius,’ she tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Gwyneth Paltrow Photo: MTV News We know that Gwyneth Paltrow has the singing chops to portray a down-on-her-luck Nashville star in “Country Strong.” But what MTV News didn’t know was whether her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, has what it takes to venture into the world of acting. So we went straight to Paltrow and asked: Does Martin have acting skills as stellar as her singing talents? “Definitely,” Paltrow said of Martin’s acting potential. “I don’t think he would ever do it, but he’s genius. Did you ever see him in ‘Extras’?” Paltrow offered as proof. In his episode of the short-lived Ricky Gervais show, Martin guest-starred as an arrogant, exaggeratedly self-absorbed version of himself who tries to sneak a mention of a new Coldplay album into a public-service announcement about the need for clean drinking water. Well, if Martin won’t consider acting, might Paltrow consider doing a cover of a Coldplay song? “Me? God no,” Paltrow said. “No. We just can’t, like, merge. His career is there and mine is there.” Don’t count Paltrow out of the singing game yet, however. She did put some thought into what type of music she’d sing on an album of her own . “I think if I was going to make a country record, it would be, like, a super-bare, kind of stripped-back kind of country,” Paltrow explained. “Like a little bit of bluegrass-influenced kind of thing.” But Paltrow said she wouldn’t necessarily limit herself to one genre, saying she really loved singing Cee Lo’s “Forget You” on “Glee.” “I also love singing ’40s standards and stuff like that,” she added. Go for it, Gwyneth! And get your hubby to do some more acting while you’re at it. What would you prefer: a Gwyneth Paltrow album or Chris Martin acting? Tell us in the comments! Justin Bieber’s ‘Karate Kid’ Song Is Eligible For An Oscar

‘Never Say Never’ joins tunes by Gwyneth Paltrow, Christina Aguilera in the running for Original Song category. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Earlier this year, Justin Bieber set tweenage hearts aflutter when he teamed with Jaden Smith to record “Never Say Never,” the theme to Smith’s “Karate Kid” reboot. And now, he’s hoping to do the same for Oscar voters. Earlier this week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — the governing body of the Academy Awards — released its list of the 41 songs eligible for the Original Song category at the 83rd annual awards, and Bieber made the cut. “Never Say Never” is in the running against the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Coming Home” and “Me and Tennessee” (both from her upcoming “Country Strong” film) and a trio of songs from Christina Aguilera’s “Burlesque.” Though Bieber made the eligibility list, the tune’s nomination is no surefire bet: Movie clips featuring each song will be screened for voting members of the Academy’s Music Branch on January 6, and it will be up to them to select the field of nominees. Nominations will be announced on January 25 at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. According to the Academy, in order for a work to be deemed eligible for the Original Song category, it must “consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film,” and “a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film, or as the first music cue in the end credits.” Bieber and Smith’s song is played over the end credits of “The Karate Kid.” The 83rd Academy Awards will be broadcast live from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, February 27. Gwyneth Paltrow LP Would Be Little Bit Country, Little Bit Cee Lo

‘If I was going to make a country record, it would be like a super-bare, kind of stripped-back,’ the ‘Country Strong’ star tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Gwyneth Paltrow Photo: MTV News Gwyneth Paltrow has already dipped her toes in the country music world . She’ll play washed-up singer Kelly Canter in the upcoming “Country Strong” and gave a much-discussed live performance at the Country Music Awards last month. So might she be ready to go the way of other actress/singers and record a proper album? MTV News recently caught up with Gwyneth and asked her about that possibility as she promoted her December 22 flick. “I think if I was going to make a country record, it would be like a super-bare, kind of stripped-back kind of country,” Paltrow explained. “Like a little bit of bluegrass-influenced kind of thing.” But Paltrow said that she wouldn’t necessarily limit herself to one genre, saying she also loved singing Cee Lo’s “Forget You” on “Glee.” “I also love singing ’40s standards and stuff like that,” she added. Still, Paltrow said fans shouldn’t look for her to rap on an album after we suggested she might let Jay-Z produce her LP. The Oscar winner said she’d leave that lane to a worthy female MC. “She just has it,” Paltrow said of Nicki Minaj, MTV News’ #5 Woman of the Year . “There’s no need for another. It’s all about Nicki in my life.” Whether she decides to get in the studio remains to be seen, but Paltrow has been getting great feedback. The “Country Strong” star told us she’d heard through the grapevine that Cee Lo had enjoyed her “Glee” cover. “I have heard from Cee Lo through other people,” Paltrow said. “He was incredibly sweet about it. It’s embarrassing to think of Cee Lo hearing me sing his song,” she laughed. Should Gwyneth record an album? Tell us what you think in the comments! Kristen Stewart Is ‘Incredible’ In ‘On The Road,’ Garrett Hedlund Says

‘Everyone is going to get to see how hard a worker she is,’ he tells MTV News of KStew. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Garrett Hedlund Photo: MTV News While Garrett Hedlund isn’t exactly a household name yet, filmgoers will soon be very familiar with him via his two new projects “Tron Legacy” and “Country Strong,” not to mention the upcoming “On the Road” film. When MTV News caught up with the busy man recently, we asked him about the recent uptick in his career — beginning with landing that coveted role in “On the Road.” “It’s the hardest I’ve ever had to work, which is a very good sign,” Hedlund said about the big-screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s tour-de-beatnik classic. “It’s the greatest experience of my lifetime — well, these last couple years have [been]. All these mean so much to me ,with ‘Tron Legacy’ and the world getting to see [‘Tron’ director] Joseph Kosinski for the first time, who I feel is the next great visionary genius,” he said. “For ‘Country Strong,’ I worked six months on the guitar to get that down and to play a country singer with Gwyneth [Paltrow] and that gets to showcase Shana Feste’s incredible talents as a writer/director, because she’s just miraculous. “Now with ‘On the Road,’ getting to work with Walter Salles, who I owe such a tremendous amount to because he gives me so much,” he explained of the “Motorcycle Diaries” director. “He fulfills me with so much other people haven’t been able to do, and he does it so simply.” Hedlund went on to say that “Road” will be full color not black-and-white, which had been rumored, and he called the experience, fittingly, “a long journey.” Regarding Kristen Stewart, Hedlund had nothing but the highest compliments to pay his co-star. “[She is] incredible, and in this, everyone is going to get to see how hard a worker she is, the devotion that she puts into her work,” Hedlund enthused. “And her performance is going to be exposed highly in this.” Hedlund added that the entire cast is packed with talent. “Everybody, Sam Riley is phenomenal, we’ve had a lot of wonderful surprises in having people like Viggo Mortenson, Amy Adams, Elisabeth Moss join us,” he said. “Most recently, Steve Buscemi and Terrence Howard. Alice Braga, it’s been phenomenal, it’s been quite the family.” Are you excited to see “On the Road”? Tell us in the comments! Gwyneth Paltrow Returning To ‘Glee’

Actress confirms she’ll reprise her role as a sassy substitute teacher on a second episode of hit Fox show. By James Dinh, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Matthew Morrison and Gwyneth Paltrow on “Glee” Photo: Fox Gwyneth Paltrow just can’t get enough “Glee.” The actress-turned-singer, who guest-starred on the hit Fox show last month, is set to reprise her role as McKinley High’s free-spirited substitute teacher Holly Holiday in an upcoming episode. The actress confirmed to “Access Hollywood” that she had signed on for two episodes, and called the TV gig “the best job ever.” There’s no word yet on when Paltrow’s second appearance will air or what tunes the Oscar-winning actress will sing. During her much-hyped debut “Glee” episode, Paltrow belted the edited version of Cee-Lo’s “F— You” (which happens to be MTV News’ #5 Song of 2010 ). She also did a mash-up of Rihanna’s smash “Umbrella” and the Gene Kelly classic “Singin’ in the Rain” alongside Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison). When MTV News caught up with the “Country Strong” star, she told us she’d heard through the grapevine that Cee Lo was flattered by her “Glee” cover . “I have heard from Cee Lo through other people,” Paltrow said. “He was incredibly sweet about it. It’s embarrassing to think of Cee Lo hearing me sing his song,” she laughed. Asked whether she’d heard from Rihanna yet, Paltrow joked, “No! What the?” “Clearly, she hated it,” we said. Of course, Gwyneth’s “Glee” appearances have won raves, including from show creator Ryan Murphy who spoke to the BBC about casting her. “Gwyneth is a great singer,” he said. “She’s done it a little bit, but I really want to show it off and show everyone how great she is.” Are you excited to see Gwyneth on “Glee” again? ‘American Idol’ Auditioners ‘Super Excited’ About New Judges

‘I pretty much almost fainted,’ one ‘Idol’ wannabe told MTV News about Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez announcement. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Matt Elias Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images The big news is out: Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler are officially “American Idol” judges. MTV News first consulted a few experts on the topic , and then we hit the L.A. “Idol” auditions, at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California, to chat with the wannabe singers to see what they thought of the new faces they would soon be seeing in the audition rooms. “I’m super excited,” Kaeli Filpi said. “I’m a huge fan of Steven Tyler. My parents are all into ’80s classic rock, so I’m a huge fan of him. I’m so excited.” Fellow hopeful Vonabell Sherman echoed the Tyler love. “Oh my gosh, I could not believe that Steven Tyler and J.Lo were on [the panel], and I’m thrilled,” she said. “If I get to see Steven Tyler, I don’t even know what I’m going to do. I think I might just, like, break down. He’s awesome!” “I pretty much almost fainted,” Keeira Lyn Ford admitted about hearing the news. “Because, honestly, Jennifer Lopez has been, it sounds corny, but she’s been my American Idol forever. She does everything I’ve ever wanted to do — music, fashion — she’s just an icon, and she’s the one I’m most excited about.” Erin Shelton had an alternative suggestion for the show: add a fourth and familiar face back into the mix. “I’ve heard rumors who it’s going to be, who’s going to be here and who’s not going to be here, and I wanted them to bring Paula [Abdul] back. Come on, bring her back! Why not? She’s hilarious,” Shelton said, before redirecting her thoughts at the actual new judges. “They’re going to bring in completely different aspects of music. We’ve got a rocker and a girl who’s been in pop forever.” “I think they’re going to bring a lot of energy, definitely newness. Out with the old, in with the new,” “Idol” hopeful Aaron James said. “I think they’re definitely going to pump it up and to try to do some different things to make the show completely different. That’s what’s going to keep people watching.” Katie Heart said she hopes Lopez will put more emphasis on the performance/dance side of things. “I love that whole performance part, and [Tyler] will bring more of a rocker’s edge.” Finally, Krihste Rhodes spoke about the fact that “Idol” fans knew what to expect from Cowell and Abdul, but that Lopez and Tyler’s tastes and preferences are a total mystery. “From Simon and Paula, it’s going to be so different, because they’ve had the same mind-set for all these seasons and the same kind of thing they’re looking for. J.Lo and Steven Tyler, who knows what they like? Nobody knows yet,” Rhodes pointed out. “It’s just going to be so interesting to see the kinds of things they come up with.” What do you want to see from Lopez and Tyler? Dancing? Rock and roll? Tough love? Tell us in the comments! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
