International Team of Paleontologists Uncovers Earliest Known Multicellular Fossils | Push back Fossil Records to 2.1 Billion Years Ago; They Lived 200 Million Years Earlier Than Originally Thought

An international team of paleontologists has uncovered the earliest known multicellular fossils, pushing back the fossil record for such life forms to 2.1 billion years ago and suggesting that they lived 200 million years earlier than scientists had thought. Multicellular fossils may be world's oldest Fossils found in Gabon suggest complex organisms lived as far back as 2.1 billion years ago, paleontologists say. By Amina Khan, Los Angeles Times July 1, 2010 An international team of paleontologists has uncovered the earliest known multicellular fossils, pushing back the fossil record for such life forms to 2.1 billion years ago and suggesting that they lived 200 million years earlier than scientists had thought. Since most fossils in that period were microscopic and single-celled, finding fossils that stretched as long as 4.75 inches was “like ordering an hors d'oeuvre and some gigantic thick-crust pizza turning up,” said Philip Donoghue, a paleontologist at the University of Bristol, who co-wrote a commentary on the finding. The report detailing the fossils, along with the commentary, was published online Wednesday in the journal Nature. The organisms, which don't resemble modern-day living things, existed when Earth's atmosphere would have been uninhabitable for today's plants and animals. Their fossils provide “the first record of that fundamental threshold in organismal complexity being surpassed,” Donoghue said. “To put it into context, the godfather of evolutionary biology, John Maynard Smith, identified eight major events in evolutionary history; achieving multicellularity was one of these.” Get important science news and discoveries delivered to your inbox with our Science & Environment newsletter. Sheriff’s Deputy Arrested For Rape

Bay county sheriff's investigators have arrested one of their own, charging him with the rape of a woman in Panama City Beach. Twenty-seven year old Benjamin Logue was arrested yesterday and charged with 1-count of sexual battery. Twenty seven year old Benjamin Logue is no longer a Bay County Sheriff's deputy. He was fired Tuesday after his colleagues arrested him for rape. Investigators say the incident happened on June 9th, while Logue was on-duty. He saw a woman walking down the side of highway 98 in the Philips inlet area. McKeithen says Logue approached the woman, and told her to get into his patrol car. Authorities say Logue then drove to a wooded area, and force the woman to have sex. Sheriff's investigators didn't find out about the incident until this past Monday, when an acquaintance of the woman came forward. The alleged victim was hesitant to report the attack, which doesn't surprise bay county sheriff frank McKeithen. “The person that they are supposed to trust has just violated them and it would be kind of hard going to a person wearing the same uniform that they are wearing”, said Sheriff McKeithen. When confronted by investigators, Logue supposedly admitted to having sex with the woman, but he claims it was consensual. “There are certain ethical boundaries that are written and there are also some ethical boundaries that are not written. The ethical boundaries that are written certainly have been violated by deputy Logue and in law enforcement we have some unwritten codes of ethics that we believe also have been violated”, said McKeithen During the course of their investigation, sheriff's investigators say they learned of a second possible victim (a little more @ link) added by: Omnomynous

Is King Tut’s Penis Missing?

Did someone sabotage the Egyptian king's mummy to hide his less-than endowed genitalia? A new report from The New Scientist presents the possibility of a anatomical conspiracy. Earlier this year, scientists speculated the cause of famed King Tutankhamen's death to be due to a bone disorder and a bad case of malaria, but just last week a group of German researchers overruled that diagnosis. Instead, they say the 19-year-old pharaoh suffered from sickle-cell anemia, a genetic abnormality in red blood cells that ultimately causes organ failure. While researching the new prognosis for The New Scientist, journalist Jo Marchant uncovered another proposed ailment of Tut's. A letter published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that Tut could also have suffered from Antley-Bixler syndrome, a genetic mutation that yields strange physical effects, such as elongated skulls and even under-developed genitalia. (Some researchers support the theory and use artistic depictions of Tut and his relatives, often show with elongated faces, as proof.) Egypt's chief archaeologist Zahi Hawass dismisses the theory, claiming that Tut was, in fact, well-developed. However, as Marchant points out, Tut's penis is no longer attached to the body. After some digging, Marchant was able to confirm that the king's genitalia was attached to the mummy during its first unwrapping in 1922, meaning the postmortem castration likely occurred in modern times. Interestingly, Tut's penis was declared missing in 1968 until a CT scan discovered it hidden in the sand that surrounded the mummy. This evidence has lead some, including Marchant to believe that Tut's penis was swapped sometime after his body was embalmed, suggesting a conspiracy existed to save him from embarrassment of the locker room variety, even in the afterlife. added by: TimALoftis

Gigantic Prehistoric Whale Hunted Other Whales

“Fossils of the whale's skull and foot-long teeth found in Peru suggest the monstrous sperm whales ranged in size from almost 43 feet (13 meters) to 59 feet (18 meters), or longer than a school bus. Just the skull alone reaches a length of almost 10 feet (3 meters). The ancient sperm whale's killer arsenal included 14-inch- (36-cm)- long teeth resembling elephant tusks that allowed it to rip and tear its prey, unlike modern sperm whales that lack functional teeth in their upper jaws and rely upon suction to grab giant squid. “Based on the size of teeth, robustness of jaws and size of temporal fossa (area of origin of jaw muscles) the bite of Leviathan must have been powerful, and he was likely able to tear pieces of meat from its prey like the modern killer whale,” said Olivier Lambert, a paleontologist at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, France. In fact, the specimen, named Leviathan melvillei, had the largest known bite of any vertebrate creature with four limbs. Only the giant shark known as megalodon could have matched the Leviathan for size when alive. Whether the two behemoths ever competed for food or fought on occasion remains unknown, Lambert said.” Giant Leviathan Whale vs Megalodon Shark?
