RODRIGO ARANGUA/AFP/Getty Images Friends And Family Are Left In Shock A woman in Panama City met a tragic end when she tried to take a selfie on a balcony. According to Metro , 44-year-old Sandra Manuela Da Costa Macedo was trying to take a selfie on the 27th-floor balcony of a building last Friday. Police sources say a gust of wind must have knocked Macedo off balance and she fell to her death with her selfie stick still in hand. Nearby, construction workers filmed the whole incident, worried that Macedo would fall during her photo session. You can check out the distressing video they filmed here . Macedo, who is said to be a teacher and mom of two, had just moved to Panama City from Portugal. Friends and acquaintances posted tributes to her online when news hit of her tragic death. Erick Alzate, a witness who lives on the same block the incident took place, gave more insight into the tragedy. “She had been taking selfies for a couple of minutes and construction workers on a block opposite were shouting to her to be careful,” said Alzate. “She decided to sit on the railing for the last selfie and that’s when she went over the edge.” Many of the reactions on social media ranged from condolences to disappointment, according to Metro . One person wrote, “Rest in peace. Such a stupid way to die,” while a Jose Guillermo wrote, “Peace for her soul and strength for her family.” Maria del Carmen wrote, “Such a tragedy that such a beautiful lady like you loses their life this way. My sincere condolences for your loved ones.” After Macedo’s tragic incident, Panama’s Fire Service posted a warning on its official Twitter page which said, “Don’t risk your life for a selfie. It’s more important to lose a minute in life than your life in a minute.”

Obama, Daughter Take a Dip in the Gulf

President Barack Obama and his daughter Sasha took a dip in the water on Saturday afternoon during their brief family vacation in Panama City Beach. White House officials said the two went for a swim at Alligator Point, behind their hotel, before eating lunch at Lime's, a waterfront restaurant at the Bay Point Marriott. Below are earlier versions of this report: 3:30 p.m.: PANAMA CITY BEACH — The first family indulged in a simple lunch by Grand Lagoon at Lime’s Bayside Bar and Grill at the Bay Point Marriott on Saturday afternoon. Early rain eased for the family, allowing them to dine outside on the dock under a partly cloudy sky, despite the heat and humidity. The first family’s menu included chicken tenders, fish tacos and a burger with an order of guacomole. White House officials said the family shared each of the items. Lunch was taken at a leisurely pace appropriate for the family vacation; President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle and their daughter Sasha spent a few hours at the hotel before departing for their next destination, which has not been announced. — 2:15 p.m.: PANAMA CITY BEACH — The oil has stopped flowing and the well has been capped, but the work is far from over in restoring the Gulf region to the pristine condition it enjoyed before the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. With a backdrop of U.S. Coast Guard ships at Navy Support Activity Panama City, President Barack Obama on Saturday vowed he and his administration will not slacken their efforts in the Gulf until the environment and economy are fully recovered. “Our job is not finished, and we are not going anywhere until it is,” he said. Sheriff’s Deputy Arrested For Rape

Bay county sheriff's investigators have arrested one of their own, charging him with the rape of a woman in Panama City Beach. Twenty-seven year old Benjamin Logue was arrested yesterday and charged with 1-count of sexual battery. Twenty seven year old Benjamin Logue is no longer a Bay County Sheriff's deputy. He was fired Tuesday after his colleagues arrested him for rape. Investigators say the incident happened on June 9th, while Logue was on-duty. He saw a woman walking down the side of highway 98 in the Philips inlet area. McKeithen says Logue approached the woman, and told her to get into his patrol car. Authorities say Logue then drove to a wooded area, and force the woman to have sex. Sheriff's investigators didn't find out about the incident until this past Monday, when an acquaintance of the woman came forward. The alleged victim was hesitant to report the attack, which doesn't surprise bay county sheriff frank McKeithen. “The person that they are supposed to trust has just violated them and it would be kind of hard going to a person wearing the same uniform that they are wearing”, said Sheriff McKeithen. When confronted by investigators, Logue supposedly admitted to having sex with the woman, but he claims it was consensual. “There are certain ethical boundaries that are written and there are also some ethical boundaries that are not written. The ethical boundaries that are written certainly have been violated by deputy Logue and in law enforcement we have some unwritten codes of ethics that we believe also have been violated”, said McKeithen During the course of their investigation, sheriff's investigators say they learned of a second possible victim (a little more @ link) added by: Omnomynous

Large Leaking BP Oil Container Washes Ashore in Florida

Oil container washes ashore in Florida By the CNN Wire Staff June 12, 2010 10:51 p.m. EDT (CNN) — A portion of beach in Panama City, Florida, was closed Saturday after a large oil container with BP markings washed ashore, local authorities said. It was not immediately clear if the container, which was leaking a small amount of oil, came from the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig that exploded April 20 and sank two days later, triggering a massive underwater gusher that has led to the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. BP officials could not be immediately reached for comment. Panama City has not yet seen tar balls or any other evidence of the spill reach its shoreline, according to Bay County spokeswoman Valerie Lovett. The large, stainless steel tank about the size of a refrigerator washed up on the west end of Panama City Beach and was discovered shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday, Bay County sheriff's Deputy Ray Maulbeck told CNN. The container has a capacity of 550 gallons of oil, but Maulbeck said officials didn't know how much oil was in the tank. The beach is set to reopen Sunday, he said. The container will be transported to Louisiana for investigation, Lovett said. added by: EthicalVegan
