By David P Shirk As I sat one night – dumbfounded at the state of humanity in today’s world, a friend of mine sent me quote. It read as follows: “That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons that History has to teach.” Though I know little about the one who wrote these words (just that he was an English author named Aldous Huxley), things suddenly seemed to make a lot more sense. The depressing thing about reading history is that you start seeing different trends and patterns followed over and over again in any given society. While they all have a certain amount of unique qualities, they all fall into the same cycle – they are born through rebellion or expansion, they grown and they prosper, they reach a point where they can no longer be sustained, and then collapse. I know this……….. added by: shanklinmike

Below is the rough transcript of some remarks I made at the campaign’s successful fun-raiser at the American Sandwich Company in Coopersburg on June 6, the 66th anniversary of D-Day. More details on the fundraiser in tomorrow’s post. The event began with a moment of silence for veterans, especially the 5,490 soldiers who have died so far in Iraq and Afghanistan. “Today we face a D-Day of a different sort, and while there is still war, the causes are economic. At the last Towne Hall, I presented “The Economy in Pictures” where I demonstrated that unemployment is > > 17%, 1 in every 8 Americans is on food stamps, the FDIC that “insures” bank accounts is hopelessly insolvent, and the true national debt is really $120 Trillion – when the $13 trillion in US treasury debt is added to the unfunded liabilities of Social Security and Medicare – a vast sum that is best put into personal terms as $400,000 for every man, woman, and child in the United States. At this point, even if the government were to tax 100% of each citizen’s dollars and properties, there still would not be enough to theoretically pay off this deb…. http://www.peacefreedomprosperity.com/?p=3552 added by: shanklinmike

A meeting of Afghan officials hoping to forge a plan to negotiate a truce with the Taliban got off to an ominous start last week, as militants launched a spate of attacks and engaged in a lengthy gun battle with security forces nearby. added by: The_Global_Report

WASHINGTON, DC, June 2, 2010 — The need to “fix” or restate financial statements is an admission by corporate management that these reports (prior to their being corrected) to the government and the investing public misrepresented the corporations' financial positions, Texas A&M University sociology professor Harland Prechel reports in a research paper published in the June 2010 issue of the American Sociological Review (ASR). Prechel and Theresa Morris of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, examined the revised statements from hundreds of the largest U.S. companies between 1995 and 2004, then co-authored the paper, titled “The Effects of Organizational and Political Embeddedness on Financial Malfeasance in the Largest U.S. Corporations: Dependence, Incentives, and Opportunities.” The researchers' analysis examines restatements that occurred after Congress passed the 2001 Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which held chief financial officers (CFOs) and chief executive officers (CEOs) personally responsible for corporate violations of security and exchange laws. Soon after this legislation was passed, the number of financial restatements rapidly increased. After eliminating the legitimate reasons for financial restatements such as accounting rule changes, their analysis shows that over 21 percent of the corporations in their study group restated their finances at least once, and some as many as seven times, during the study period. more at the link http://www.asanet.org/press/financial_malfeasance.cfm added by: Incredulous

Congressional Democrats and the White House are toying with different ways to force BP to cover the costs of damages from the Gulf oil spill. But they face stiff opposition from industry…and it seems leading Republicans. In response to a question from TPMDC, House Minority Leader John Boehner backed Tom Donohue, President of the Chamber of Commerce, in saying taxpayers should help pick up the tab. “I think the people responsible in the oil spill–BP and the federal government–should take full responsibility for what's happening there,” Boehner said at his weekly press conference this morning. On Friday, Donohue made clear that he opposes efforts to stick BP, a member of the Chamber, with the bill. “It is generally not the practice of this country to change the laws after the game,” he said. “Everybody is going to contribute to this clean up. We are all going to have to do it. We are going to have to get the money from the government and from the companies and we will figure out a way to do that.” So I asked Boehner, “do you agree with Tom Donohue of the Chamber that the government and taxpayers should pitch in to clean up the oil spill?” The shorter answer is “yes”. The Chamber is extremely influential in Republican politics, so on that level it's not particularly surprising that Boehner has Donohue's back on this one. But the politics of asking the federal government (i.e. taxpayers) to help cover the multi-billion dollar cleanup and rescue efforts are deadly. Look for Democrats to jump all over this one. added by: TimALoftis

A Florida teacher's lawsuit against her old school says she was fired because administrators found out her baby was conceived before her wedding. Jarretta Hamilton, a former fourth-grade teacher at Southland Christian School in St. Cloud, said she approached administrators in April 2009, shortly after her wedding, to tell them she was pregnant and request maternity leave for the coming fall, WKMG-TV, Orlando, reported Wednesday. “That's when the question was posed to her, 'Did you conceive prior to marriage?'” said Edward Gay, Hamilton's lawyer. He said Hamilton told administrators the truth, the baby was conceived about three weeks before the wedding, and she was fired one week later without being allowed to finish the school year. Gay said he received a letter from Southland Christian School administrator Julie Ennis explaining the reasons for the termination. “Jarretta was asked not to return because of a moral issue that was disregarded, namely fornication — sex outside of marriage,” Ennis wrote. “We request that Jarretta withdraw her complaint and consider the testimony of the Lord.” The letter said Hamilton was aware of the school's “standards, values, and purposes,” but Gay said the morality clause does not override state and federal discrimination laws. The lawsuit alleges violations of a federal pregnancy discrimination law and a state marital status discrimination law. The suit also alleges invasion of privacy for school officials disclosing the reason behind her termination to parents to students. http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2010/06/09/Suit-Teacher-canned-for-premarital-sex/UP… added by: Stoneyroad

Could we choose an other gas station to fill our tanks? Where do we go? Exxon? Shell? They are all EVIL! They are all destroying our world and we are part of the problem and always will be. Deliberately or not we are all accomplices until we do something about it. The core spirit of the Organic Legion's movement is to eradicate a problem, boycotting the source. Why wasting our time and effort to get a ban on plastic bags or stopping the next offshore/onshore oil drilling that will cause more environmental catastrophes when we could stop this altogether? Stop oil dependency and the oil monopoly now. Alternative, safe technologies exist and work effectively, enough to power every vehicle and every home in America and all over the world. Stop this EVIL now, they run the economy and our lives. They are contaminating our soil, our water and the future of our children and generations to come. We are the people, we are the almighty, we can change things. Let's unite and rise as one to stop this poison that is here to stay and this cruel greed. Do we really want to wait until everything turns to “black” to realize what's happening? WE hold a power, the power to change things once and for all. Nobody can't take that away from us! Sign the petition below: http://environment.change.org/petitions/view/no_more_drill_baby_drill Thank you for taking action by stopping the oil dependency and its monopoly on our economy, environment and our lives.
