Ron Howard Still Confident in The Dark Tower Going Forward

Earlier this month, Universal put the brakes on Ron Howard’s ambitious adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower because of budget concerns. Not that Howard is concerned. “We’re thinking of starting in early spring [of 2012] now,” he told EW . “I can’t really say who’ll be in it yet, but Javier Bardem has shown a great deal of interest. We’ll know by the end of the summer, when our flashing green light goes solid.” [ EW ]

Bad Movies We Love: Shanghai Surprise

I tried so hard to find an Oprah-themed Bad Movie We Love this week. Bad news, my darlings: they’re all not good enough. Beloved is too boring, Native Son is too serious, and The Color Purple is too funny. (Trust me.) So I rallied and made big choices. This week I’m commemorating Tree of Life star Sean Penn’s filthy past and Oprah’s biggest finale guest : the ineffable, the insufferable, La Sleaza Bonita herself, Madonna. Read: THIS IS A GREAT DAY. And the movie is a legend among awful, latrine-stink cinema, a rancid little misfortune cookie called Shanghai Surprise . Or as I prefer to call it: Not-So-Fast Times with Frigid Wife .

The novelist James Ellroy, a man who knows from both successful and unsuccessful screen adaptations of his work, is fond of saying that money is the gift no one ever returns. But in Hollywood, anyway, that doesn’t mean you can’t complain about it being the wrong size, the wrong color, redundant or any litany of other common gripes by authors who stand by as their darlings are shredded at the movies.
