Chris Weitz on Twilight Nods, Oscar Hopes, and the Politics of A Better Life

About three years ago, in the same year he landed the gig directing the second film in the Twilight film franchise, Chris Weitz fell in love with a script about a poor illegal immigrant and single father chasing the American dream in East Los Angeles. Entitled The Gardener , the project would feature no stars, shoot on location in gang-affiliated L.A., and would never in a million years enjoy a hundred million dollar opening weekend. Weitz had to do it.

The novelist James Ellroy, a man who knows from both successful and unsuccessful screen adaptations of his work, is fond of saying that money is the gift no one ever returns. But in Hollywood, anyway, that doesn’t mean you can’t complain about it being the wrong size, the wrong color, redundant or any litany of other common gripes by authors who stand by as their darlings are shredded at the movies. And few ever did it better than Anne Rice right here at Movieline.

MTV Movie Awards 2010: Everyone Twies Hard

You can’t fault last night’s MTV Movie Awards for a lack of effort: Enough awards were thrown at New Moon to incite ecstatic middle-school bloodletting, Betty White razzed Sandra Bullock, and Katy Perry’s tan decolletage looked just like DJ Pauly D’s ass. Everyone felt festive! But with lukewarm host Aziz Ansari leading the show and dubious winners filling the two-hour ceremony, MTV’ s annual romp felt ho-hum and spastic. Impressive, sort of. Time to figure out this mess and conclude with a full list of the night’s winners.

To the delight of shrieking Twi-hards across America, Oprah’s Twilight spectacul-aaaaaaar aired today. Kristen Stewart spent the hour fidgeting in her seat and avoiding eye contact with everyone, even the Jamaican fan whom Oprah had flown in just to meet her. Robert Pattinson responded to every serious questions with quippy answers (“She’s pregnant,” he shouted when Oprah asked if he was dating Stewart). Taylor Lautner talked about his abs and Dakota Fanning seemed wise beyond her years. Basically, it was every Twilight promotional interview you have ever seen plus Oprah. Fortunately, Movieline has compiled the five anecdotes you have not already heard a thousand times after the jump.

New Moon was a solid follow-up to Twilight . But we know one way in which the sequel could have been even better: More Taylor Lautner shirtless! Granted, we were privy to a number of scenes in which Jacob eschewed a shirt… but would anyone have objected to one or two (dozen) more? Fortunately, a couple weeks after the New Moon DVD hit stores, a deleted, five-minute scene from the film has been released. To many, though, Lilly Scott put on the best opening week performance. Don’t believe us? Special New Moon DVD to Feature Sneak Peek at Eclipse

It takes an awful lot to make Taylor Lautner’s 18th birthday the second biggest Twilight news of the day, but… Fans anxious for a sneak peek at Eclipse should purchase The Twilight Saga: New Moon on DVD or Blu-ray at Walmart. That store’s “Ultimate Fan Edition” will be the only one to feature a seven-minute preview of the third film in this franchise. Based on a press release from this week, it will include: New interviews with Robert Pattinson , Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Stephenie Meyer; Behind-the-scenes and on-set footage, including the premiere of a scene from Eclipse . The Ultimate Fan Edition is available for pre-order at this very moment. It’s likely to surpass Twilight as the most pre-ordered movie in Walmart history. New Moon comes to DVD on March 20 and Eclipse hits theaters on June 30… as if you hadn’t already seared those dates into your memory ages ago.
