Derek Jeter will soon end his professional baseball career. But it’s clear which occupation he should take on next: Hollywood screenwriter. The future Hall of Famer played his final home game tonight (and his final game overall at shortstop), finishing with three runs batted in, one run scored and, oh, the GAME-WINNING SINGLE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE NINTH. In truly ridiculous fashion that no one could possibly have seen coming, closer Dave Robertson blew a three-run lead in the top of the ninth, seemingly putting a damper on Jeter’s final appearance in the Bronx… … only for Jeter to step to the plate in the bottom half of the inning. With one out. And the game tied at 5. And for Jeter to line a single to right. And for the winning run to cross the plate. And for Jeter to be mobbed first by his current teammates and later by some of his beloved ex-teammates. Seriously amazing. Good luck topping that one, A Rod. FINAL SCORES: Yankees 6, Orioles 5. Derek Jeter to Retire at End of 2014 Season

Derek Jeter will soon have a lot more time on his hands to sleep with really gorgeous women: The iconic Yankees shortstop has announced that 2014 will be his final season. Jeter has a lifetime batting average of .312 and has collected 3,316 career hits. He seemed poised to challenge Pete Rose’s record for most hits in a career until he broke his ankle in the 2012 American League Championship, missing nearly all of last season as a result. The shortstop also has five World Series rings on his resume, along with a record .351 batting average in the Fall Classic. He will be the second first ballot Hall of Famer to leave the game in as many seasons for the Yankees, following Mariano Rivera’s retirement last year. In a 15-paragraph message that started and ended by thanking his fans, Jeter broke this news via Facebook, writing: “The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball.” Casey Close, Jeter’s long-time agent, then confirmed the development to multiple outlets.

At least Omarosa has more time to focus on suing La Toya Jackson now. The infamous, always-erratic reality star got the chop in Donald Trump’s boardroom, the very same place where she became a “star” many seasons ago. Last night’s episode of Celebrity Apprentice: All-Stars involved the cast members creating actual artwork and raising money by selling it off to the highest bidder. When Lil Jon’s team lost, he took Omarosa down with him. Omarosa got canned after raising just $12,000, a paltry sum compared to Lil Jon’s $82,500, yet slightly more than Dennis Rodman’s total of $10,000. It appeared that the Big O slipped some of her own money to a friend to contribute, however, while The Worm was given props for his original work of art. With pieces like a signed Derek Jeter baseball bat, Trump was impressed … and come on, the guy just came back from North Korea . Cut him some slack. Anyway, off she goes. What do you think? Kate Upton and Justin Verlander are dating for real! Justin Verlander apparently has another reason to celebrate . So says the grandfather of the Detroit Tigers’ pitching ace. Yes, we’re serious. Celebuzz started asking around about the rumor, which first popped up in July when Kate Upton was seen cheering him on at a game . Richard Verlander, Sr., had this to say: “I heard he has been on dates with a Sports Illustrated girl. I saw a photo – she’s beautiful. They make a good looking pair because he’s a good looking man too.” “I do know he’s on the dating scene . Justin is a fine boy and whoever he ends up with is lucky. He’s not only a great baseball player, he’s a great guy.” Everybody, all together now … AWW. It’s funny, grandfathers have been known to do or say moderately embarrassing things – like trying to set you up with Miss Florida – but this might take the cake. If nothing else, he’s giving Justin Timberlake’s grandma – an occasional source of scoop on his relationship with Jessica Biel – a run for her octogenarian money. Derek Jeter Fractures Ankle, Out for Remainder of Season

Derek Jeter, the captain and starting shortstop for the New York Yankees, fractured his ankle in the 12th inning of the American League Championship Series opener this evening and will miss the remainder of the postseason. Which, at this rate, will last approximately three more games for the Yankees. Following a record-setting, game-tying home run by Raul Ibanez in the bottom of the ninth, the Yankees offense once again sputtered and couldn’t push anyone across the plate over the next three innings. In the 12th, Jeter moved to his left to field a ground ball, only to tumble down in pain. He was helped off the field, unable to put any weight on his left leg. Following the 6-4 loss, Joe Girardi announced that Jeter had broken his ankle and will require three months to recuperate. Do the Yankees have a chance of winning the 2012 World Series?   No way! Sports Illustrated Lists The Top 50 Highest-Earning American Athletes Sports Illustrated has done a lil’ research and they know who’s REALLY ridin’ around and gettin’ it, and who ain’t got no money in the bank… This year’s list is unique for a couple more reasons. NBA players, who have historically claimed more spots in the Fortunate 50 than any other group, had their salaries slashed by nearly 20 percent this season because of the 66-game schedule brought on by the lockout of 2011. Our findings consisted solely of salary, winnings, bonuses, endorsements and appearance fees. We consulted players’ associations, tour records, agents and news reports. Our endorsement estimates for 2012 came from Burns Entertainment & Sports Marketing, other sports-marketing executives and analysts, and agents. Salary figures were based on current or most recently completed seasons (July 1 for the NFL, which is why Drew Brees, who just signed a $100 million deal last Friday, isn’t on the list). For winnings-based sports (auto racing, golf, tennis), we used the 2011 calendar year. Boxing purses are from June 2011 through May 2012. Candidates for the U.S. 50 had to be American citizens and currently active in their sports. Being that the list is so long, we’re gonna bring you the top 15.
