A group of young Black men from Wayne State was invited by her Reach Higher initiative to have an intimate discussion with her brother Craig Robinson and actor Keegan-Michael Key about the importance of education at the Motown Museum. The students then candidly shared personal experiences about finding their place as Black men in predominately white spaces. One student shared the struggle of having to continuously justify who he was. It will continue beyond college, no matter where we go. There were people who thought that Barack couldn’t be a good president. There were people who questioned whether I would be a good first lady. My brother gets questioned all the time about whether he’s qualified or able, and we all face those things,” she said, according to the news outlet. “That doesn’t go away. But you have to practice knowing who you are and focus on just doing the work day by day. That’s really all you can do.” She encouraged all of the young men to push forward and continue to reach new heights of success. Obama is reaching new heights of her own. Police Ain’t Isht: Woman Awarded $40,000 After Officer Tickets Her For Having HIV

Police ain’t isht ! State Of Michigan Awards Shalandra Jones $40,000 For HIV Ticket A Dearborn, Michigan officer’s discriminatory practices has cost the city $40,000 in damages. According to The Detroit Free Press , Shalandra Jones was berated by Officer David Lacey in January 2012 for not telling him early in a traffic stop that she had HIV. According to dash cam video Officer Lacey yelled at Jones, who was not legally required to tell him about her diagnosis, because he “wasn’t wearing any gloves” and worried he’d contract the disease.  Jones told the officer she had HIV after he asked her about medication in her car that she uses to treat HIV. He ended up ticketing her on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge; she had a marijuana medical card, but it had expired. The charge was dismissed last year. […] After finding out Jones had HIV, Lacey said: “You just made me mad.” Lacey said he “did not want to take any diseases home to his family.” The officer added that “Dearborn does not have that many people living with HIV, and the police do not like people with HIV.” Lacey then said to Jones: “Honestly, if it wasn’t for that, I don’t think I would have wrote anybody for anything. But that kind of really aggravated me, you know what I mean? You got to tell me right away. … Because at that time, I wasn’t wearing any gloves.” He then seemed to hint at harming suspects who did not immediately disclose their medical history. “So that way we don’t get pissed. Cause otherwise we get pissed. Bad things happen,” he said. “I found a needle on a guy once and he didn’t tell me. … He’s not going to forget anymore.” SMH… Jones filed her lawsuit in 2014. Detroit Woman Bites Off Boyfriend’s Ear During Argument via NY Daily News Talk about getting an earful. A 31-year-old Michigan woman was behind bars after she bit off part of her boyfriend’s ear during a domestic dispute over the weekend. Danielle Nebelung was allegedly chewing her boyfriend’s ear off during a verbal argument around 2:45 a.m. Saturday when the fight turned physical. As the woman’s 36-year-old boyfriend turned to walk into the bedroom of their Macomb Township home, Nebelung started to punch the man in the face and head, the Detroit Free Press reported. When he turned away from her, she allegedly hopped on the man’s back and chomped off the top part of his left ear. She bit off a “substantial portion” of the man’s ear, which was taken, along with the injured man, to the hospital, police told the Daily Tribune. Nebelung was arraigned Monday on a charge of aggravated assault with the intent to maim and held in lieu of a $10,000 bond. The felony charge carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison if convicted. The alleged biter is next due in court March 17.

Dirty Bolitics: Jury Finds Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Guilty On 20+ Counts Including Corrpution, Fraud And Extortion Charges

Kwame Kilpatrick Found Gulity On 22Charges Including Corruption And Fraud Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has finally had his day in court following a 5-month trial in connection with a laundry list of corruption allegations that began surfacing back in 2008. via NY Times Kwame M. Kilpatrick, a former mayor of Detroit, was found guilty on Monday of a range of charges, including corruption and fraud, at the completion of a five-month trial. Jurors reached consensus on 40 of the 45 charges leveled against Mr. Kilpatrick and his co-defendants, the judge in the trial said. The verdicts brought to a close a trial in which prosecutors laid out a complex case against Mr. Kilpatrick and his co-defendants — including his father, Bernard, and a city contractor, Bobby W. Ferguson — arguing that they had used the mayor’s office to enrich themselves for years through shakedowns, kickbacks and bid-rigging schemes. The jury found Mr. Kilpatrick guilty of some 22 of the 30 charges against him, including the most serious charges, that of racketeering and extortion, which each have a maximum sentence of 20 years. In 2008, Mr. Kilpatrick resigned after text messages were unearthed by The Detroit Free Press that exposed an affair with his chief of staff. The romantic revelation led him to plead guilty to obstruction of justice charges for lying about the relationship under oath in an unrelated lawsuit against the city. But the corruption charges against Mr. Kilpatrick, filed in 2010, had been by far the most serious of his troubles. Prosecutors accused him and his close associates — a group referred to in the indictment as the Kilpatrick Enterprise — of extortion and illegally steering municipal contracts to Mr. Ferguson worth $84 million. After the verdicts were read, Mr. Kilpatrick shook his head, muttered and looked at his lawyer. Mr. Kilpatrick, whose wife and three children live in the Dallas area, could face up to 20 years in prison.

Freshman Player Dies at 19

William Wayne Jones III, 19 years old from Smyrna, Tennessee, was taking part in a non-contact practice for the university’s football team. During this practice, Jones unexpectedly collapsed and was discovered unconscious. Jones was then transported to Baptist Hospital, and later pronounced dead. The Detroit Free Press reports that Jones was 19 and was a freshman defensive back who hadn’t played any games because he was red-shirted. He caught a football toward the beginning of practice and

A terrible story… 3-Week-Old Baby Mauled To Death By Pitbull In an extremely sad story out of Detroit, a 3-week-old baby was fatally attacked by a family pitbull while sitting in her car seat that was put on the floor. via Detroit Free Press : A 3-week-old girl was killed by a pit bull Thursday after her mother left her in a car seat on the floor inside a house on Detroit’s west side, police said. Sgt. Eren Stephens said the newborn’s mother went to a home and took the infant inside with her. The mother put the girl, still strapped into the seat, on the floor, not knowing there was a dog loose in the house. The mother, Stephens said, stepped away from the infant for a moment, but when she returned the pit bull was mauling the girl. The baby was taken to a hospital, but she died of her injuries. Police did not release the name of the girl or her 24-year-old mother. The dog was removed from the home Thursday night and taken to an animal control facility. The investigation has been turned over to the homicide division. Stephens said investigators will submit their reports to prosecutors, who will then decide whether to file any criminal charges. “It seems like maybe just a tragic accident,” Stephens said. (Nov. 21) — A Michigan man who survived bladder cancer in 2007 has now been forced to survive humiliation at the hands of the TSA, whose airport screeners spilled urine on him during a recent security check at Detroit's airport. Michigan cancer survivor Thomas Sawyer says he was left covered in his own urine when a TSA agent broke the seal on his urostomy bag during a pat-down. Thomas Sawyer, 61, was flying to Orlando, Fla., on Nov. 7 with his wife to attend a wedding. Since having part of his bladder removed because of cancer, Sawyer wears a urostomy bag attached to a tube from his abdomen. He said he asked TSA agents if he could be screened in private because of his medical condition. “One officer looked at another, rolled his eyes and said that they really didn't have any place to take me,” the retired special education teacher told MSNBC. “After I said again that I'd like privacy, they took me to an office.” “I tried to warn him that he would hit the bag and break the seal on my bag, but he ignored me,” Sawyer said. “Sure enough, the seal was broken and urine started dribbling down my shirt and my leg and into my pants.” “I was just so embarrassed, so humiliated,” Sawyer also told The Detroit Free Press.
