One in four people don’t even know they have it… Diabetes Cases Rise To Never-Before-Seen Levels In United States America’s level of diabetic cases has risen to alarming levels, and the main culprit to blame remains obesity . Via LATimes : Driven by surging obesity, an aging population and doubly high risks among blacks and Latinos, the American epidemic of diabetes has leaped to historic heights in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday. Diabetes mellitus now afflicts 29 million Americans — 9.3% of the nation’s population. And 1 in 4 don’t know they have the disease, which is thought to increase the risk of heart attack or stroke as much as fourfold. Releasing a welter of new statistics on the disease, the agency said an additional 86 million American adults — nearly 1 in 3 — has prediabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are abnormally elevated but below the criteria for diagnosing diabetes. Between 15% and 30% of those with prediabetes will go on to develop the full-fledged metabolic disorder within five years, a transition that can sometimes be averted with substantial weight loss and increased physical activity. The new statistics are based on national health data gathered in 2012 and represent a nearly 12% increase in the number of those with diabetes since the last statistical report was issued in 2010. In 2012 alone, 1.7 million Americans 20 years and older were newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. African Americans, Latinos and those of American Indian/Alaska Native descent are roughly twice as likely to have diagnosed diabetes as non-Latino white adults, the CDC said. People we have all got to do better! This is a serious epidemic. Cut down on the sugar before they have to cut off your leg!

The school nurse just loves ya… like a fat kid loves cake! California schools are taking early steps to keep kids from continuing to eat like chunky monkeys . Via NY Daily News reports : In an effort to combat childhood obesity, schools in California have begun sending out what have been dubbed “fat letters” to the parents of overweight children. After checking the weight of preschoolers in the San Fernando valley, registered dietician Lauren Schmitt is tasked with contacting the families of children who have already begun losing the battle of the bulge. “We look at growth charts and percentiles. And when a child is at 95 percent of their…we can look at weight for age or weight for height…that child would be considered obese,” Schmitt told KNX News. There is no shortage of kids in the LA area whose parents end up receiving a “fat letter.” Of the 900 children between the ages of two and five that she evaluates, Schmitt says approximately 200 qualify as obese. “We let the parents know in a gentle fashion, but we also send out a ton of handouts to try to help that family,” Schmitt said. California is not the only state to send “fat letters” to parents. Similar obesity information is sent in 19 other states. “It shouldn’t be a stigma. It’s not a way to categorize someone. It’s just showing that this child has increased risk to be obese as an adult, which then could lead to quite a few chronic diseases,” said Schmitt. A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released last month found that childhood obesity rates edged down slightly last year, falling in 18 states. These kids are ages 2-5!!! That’s so young to be obese. If you got a letter like this would you be pissed or grateful someone took the time to point out the problem early?

Brandon DeShazer, Kenya Moore’s assistant, was seriously roughed up by Appolo Nida, Phaedra Parks’ husband (below), in an epic Real Housewives of Atlanta brawl. We’ll have to wait months before this plays out on the Bravo show, but the alleged beatdown, which was caught on tape, all stemmed from a workout video. It’s not entirely clear why, but witnesses say Appolo flew into a rage and “violently attacked” DeShazer at a party that was being filmed for the upcoming season. Nida reportedly had to be restrained by SEVEN crew members. Appolo Nida was pissed because Brandon DeShazer and Kenya Moore had apparently agreed to produce a workout video starring Phaedra Parks. Instead, they went and produced their own, cutting Phaedra out. Nida felt slighted, blamed DeShazer for stabbing Phaedra in the back, and opened huge can of whoop ass on The Real Housewives of Atlanta star’s assistant. That’s according to witnesses. Nida has a different story. The reality star tells TMZ that there was a fight on the set, which he didn’t elaborate on, and that he tried to break it up and got attacked by Brandon. Nida says he defended himself but it got out of control.

Schools in 19 states are weighing students and sending reports to their parents with their body mass index (BMI) and other measurements, reports say. Kids have started calling the reports “fat letters.” Fat Letters Many families and health experts have started pushing back against the reports -slash-fat letters, arguing they could damage the children’s self-esteem. Proponents say the practice is actually an effective progress report and a tool for establishing whether a student is healthy or unhealthy physically. A person’s BMI is calculated by dividing their weight by the square of their height, then applied to their age and gender and measured against peers. BMI is the primary measurement used to determine if a person is considered overweight and obese, a condition these 19 states are trying to reduce. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third of children and adolescents are considered overweight or obese. These children are believed to at increased risk for a variety of health problems, including asthma, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. None of which are good, obviously, but is it really a school’s place to call attention to it in this manner, evaluating BMI alongside students’ academic skills? Fat letters: Right or wrong? Right! If it helps anyone get healthier it’s worth it! Wrong! It’s not the schools’ place to do this! View Poll »

This is a step in a positive direction by labeling obesity a disease. Obesity Labeled A Disease According to CNN One word could have a big impact on the way doctors treat obesity in the United States. The American Medical Association has adopted a new policy that officially labels obesity as a disease “requiring a range of medical interventions to advance obesity treatment and prevention,” according to an AMA statement. The physicians’ group voted to approve the obesity policy, among others, on Tuesday during its annual meeting in Chicago. The U.S. obesity rate increased almost 50% between 1997 and 2012, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Today, nearly 30% of American adults are considered obese, and the problem is almost as prevalent in kids. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in the past 30 years, the CDC says. Obesity for adults is defined as having a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher. BMI is a way to measure body fat based on your weight and height. (Calculate your BMI here) Being obese increases your risk factor for developing many serious conditions, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, liver disease, sleep apnea and osteoarthritis. In fact, obesity has been linked to almost every chronic disease in some way or another. “Recognizing obesity as a disease will help change the way the medical community tackles this complex issue,” AMA board member Dr. Patrice Harris said in a statement. Obesity has long been recognized as a disease by other groups, but this move by the AMA sends a strong signal to the medical community, said CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Some experts worry suddenly declaring one-third of Americans “ill” or “sick” will increase the desire for quick interventions or medications and discourage people from making the lifestyle changes known to combat obesity. On the other hand, AMA’s declaration could help increase funding for future obesity research. It could also lead to payment for doctors who want to simply talk to patients about nutrition or exercise — time that’s not currently reimbursed by insurance plans. Identifying obesity as a disease may also help in reducing the stigma often associated with being overweight, said Joe Nadglowski, president and CEO of the Obesity Action Coalition. “Obesity has been considered for a long time to be a failure of personal responsibility — a simple problem of eating too much and exercising too little,” he said. “But it’s a complex disease… we’re hoping attitudes will change.” Do you think obesity is like other diseases or is it a result of people feeding their faces?
